“The one and only”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2011

If you have time limitation, this place is the first one to start and must go. Perfect timing is at evening when the place is not very crowded and the temperature scale down. Just sit at some place facing the pagoda for a while and i hope you will feel the peace.

“Absolutely stunning, not to be missed in Burma”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2011

We went in Burma in July and on our stop at Rangoon went to Shwedagon Pagoda. Before going to Burma i found an iPhone app called Asia Treasures : Shwedagon Pagoda with gorgeous pictures of it and i knew instantly i had to go there. I've been at most of the great buddhist places in Asia but this one is definitely the best, much better for instance than Wat Phra Keaw in Bangkok. Not only all the temples are beautiful but the peaceful religious atmosphere is incredible, and unique. And i agree with another comment that you must go twice, during day and on sunset or at night.

“Always spectacular”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2011

Best late afternoon and evening, when the changing light turns the golden pagoda all shades of gleaming almost surreal burnished copper thru gold. After the sun sets, the pagoda is brilliantly lit by floodlights, producing another fascinating spectacle. Avoid the hot middle of the day, since walking barefoot on the hot marble is quite a challenge, since the area is vast, there is so much to see, and there is an amazing ambience to absorb. Put aside a few hours for this visit. While the lifts are indeed well-managed, they are not free. The Shwedagon is an operating Buddhist holy site, and entrance is free if you detach from any tour group going to the lift, and independently walk up the long entrance staircase, enjoying the various market stalls en route (they close down in the evening). The small brass temple bells are highly recommended. Quality and price may vary somewhat, so make sure the sound is crystal clear and pleasing to your ear before you buy.

“A great shopping experience! :-)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2011

Shwedagon rightfully reigns as Yangon's number one attraction, so no need to repeat everyone else's gushing comments. It's a revered site, and not to be missed. But don't forget to scour the shopping steps up to the pagoda, as well. Local religious crafts hand-made, and something entirely from a different era. Fascinating stuff, and a glimpse into everyday Bamar trades. Globetrotting Gourmet

“The Heart of Rangoon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2011

Not to be missed this is the center of everything and the pride of Yangoon. Not only do people come here for prayer but it is also a social meeting place. Bring an umbrella not just for occasional rain but to avoid too much sun and heat.
