“Better off somewhere else”

While it's true, hotels are expensive in Myanmar there are better hotels to stay at while visiting Yangon especially in light of how much these rooms cost. The only reason why my friends and I stayed at the Asia Plaza was because this was the hotel that Intrepid had chosen for the start and end of our trip.

The hotel's rooms are generally large but it's true as reported by others, that the rooms smell damp and are generally run down. The breakfast was an awful event with large line-ups around the coffee and drinks table and the toaster and food just running out. WIFI as previously noted is very slow.

The worst part of our stay had to be when a friend of mine had her money stolen from her room. Their room safe did not work despite several requests to have it fixed and more importantly, during this time, they were not informed that the hotel had a safety box for patrons, located near the reception desk. Cleaning staff had come to visit earlier in the day but interestingly enough, nothing was cleaned and the room safe was never fixed.

What is terrible is the way management at the hotel handled/responded to this incident. They skirted the issue and didn't look into the matter further. Perhaps any assurance by management would have been somewhat reassuring than nothing at all.

So, if you are staying here - lock up your valuables or use the safety deposit box located in the reception area that staff may or may not inform you about. Do expect a large room and friendly door staff. Do expect the closeness to Scott's Market and other key sites. Don't expect much from breakfast or management should anything go wrong - at least from our experience.

Room Tip: higher floors have a better view of the City.

I stayed here at the start and end of an Intrepid tour. I was a little worried by some of the reviews on Trip Advisor so was pleasantly surprised by the spacious rooms and hot water. The lift is extremely slow and breakfast one morning was a bit chaotic, with the staff not restocking many items, but this is perhaps to be expected in a country that has only just opened up to tourists. The staff were extremely friendly, arranging taxis and letting me store luggage for two weeks at no charge. I would stay here again.

This hotel was undergoing a renovation, probably in anticipation of the peak season November/December. One day we were informed that there would not be any electricity, unfortunately this included the lift. A helpful member of the lobby staff produced a big torch and escorted us up the stairs. The room was clean and spacious, with a safety deposit box. Breakfast was on the top floor, a good variety of fruit, toast or fried rice. We had dinner one night and the food was very good. However it would have been helpful if there had been a menu in the bedroom. The WiFi was slow. Great views from the roof.
We had read elsewhere that there might be problems with bedbugs, so we brought out a can of spray as a precaution, and were not affected. Bedbugs are probably a problem in any area that has monsoon weather.
The location was good as it was close to Ruby Market, where there was a coffee restaurant, and supermarket to buy bottled water, or the local rum or whisky. It was also about a 20 minute walk to Scotts Market, which seemed to have the best collection of t-shirts in the whole of Myanmar, along with other tourist souvenirs.

This is Yangon so I wasn't expecting too much if I wasn't staying in the flashiest of hotels. It's a good downtown location, the staff are great and it has everything you'd need even slow wifi. But it is very rundown and scruffy around the edges. But if you're not too fussy it does the trick. The view from the roof (breakfast) bar of the Shwedagon is amazing and a lot cheaper than similar ones elsewhere. Beware being woken at 4am by the temple loud speaker to get everyone to cook food for the monks - take ear plugs - but I reckon this happens everywhere in Yangon.

Room Tip: Not temple side if that's possible in Yangon

Stayed here as part of an Intrepid tour. The rooms on our arrival and return where basic comfortable and clean had a great view. Breakfast was excellent especially the omelette. Special mention has to go to the staff who ran around looking after our every needs. The environment around the hotel fabulous. If you get a chance go to the Ruby Mart down the road and try the red and green curry. We spent most of the time sleeping on top of the bed. Take a silk sleeping bag liner with you to sleep in

I stayed here for 2 nights as a part of a group tour - and I wasn`t impressed.

Run down, not very clean, and a strange breakfast. Also, just wireless internett i the reception area.

I wouldn`t recommend it - expensive for it`s range.

My partner & I stayed here as part of our Intrepid Travel organised trip to Burma. We had no choice of hotel, as they booked it for us.
We stayed for two separate trips; one at the start of our holiday, the second at the end.
The first room on the tenth floor (Rm 1014 I think) faced towards the river and had a view of the slums nearby..not a great first impression. The windows didn't close, so the mosquito's were free to join us in bed each night which was delightful (especially I as I sat reading about all the diseases I could catch). The air con was rubbish (not cold, very noisy), the room was dull, the shower was weak, the room was basically dated and I'd give it 2/10.
The second room we had was on the eighth floor (Rm 805), which faced to the front of the hotel and gave views of the old trains outside and allowed us to listen to all the car horns at night. It was wonderful... To be fair, this room had a good shower and was much cleaner than the first. We were meant to have a double bed, but what we actually got was two singles pushed together, so it wasn't the most comfortable couple of nights. This room gets a 5/10 from me - better, but room for improvement.
The breakfast service is quite basic; dry bread each day and stale cereals. UHT milk as well, which tastes truly awful in tea & on cereals at the best of times. I guess they can't offer fresh milk as the electricity doesn't stay on long enough to cool the fridges! Don't get stuck in the lifts during a power cut on a hot & sunny day; you'll cook!

The only good thing which I must mention was the good service from all of the staff. From the helpful Security guard to the efficient and tidy room cleaning teams, I couldn't find fault with the staff. They clearly work very hard in difficult conditions and I was impressed. It's a shame their management don't give them a hotel to match their service standards - the staff should come to London and show some of the so-called posh hotels here what decent service is!

Room Tip: Rooms at the front give a view of the Pagoda and old train station/trains.
