“Reasonable hotel for the price”
Reviewed February 27, 2013

We paid $60 + 2 * $15 airport pickup and drop off. Judging from reviews of other hotels the Eastern Hotel is good value for money, although we did discover a better one on returning later to Yangon. Staff were very friendly, efficient and trust worthy. Room was clean-ish (although the loo hadnt been cleaned by the looks of it). There was a minibar, a tv and aircon which was fine. Location was ok, although we initially tried walking down to the centre but came across large unlighted areas and broken pavements, so ended up heading back and found a few cheap and good food places nearby to the hotel. The quality of hotels in Burma generally isnt great, so in context this place is not bad.

check in easy staff very helpful, money in front.room nothing special but nice and clean, bathroom fully functional.all rooms have windows but either side face the next building and rear overlooks rather dirty alley, front rooms are booked first as have street view.as yangoon is coming up fast workmen noisy during day nighttime quiet except rear rooms.

Room Tip: front room by far the best

The Eastern is an older hotel but the rooms have been refurbished and include minifridges. It is a bit out of the center, but since we had transportation everywhere it was no problem and there are neighborhood services within a block or so: restaurants, street food and a supermarket.
The price is commensurate with its location so we consider it a bargain for what we got: one of the best showers ever and very decent in room wifi and internet(rather unique for Myanmar!).
The only negative is that they only have twin beds.

The staff are super friendly and absolutely helpful. They give u a detailed map of downtown Yangon as you check in. The map is the most detailed I had seen and perfect for pottering around the sule pagoda and botatung pagoda.

The rooms are pretty basic but clean and neat. Sheets were laundered, no spitoon thankfully. Bathroom has hot shower but shower curtains need to be changed as it hasn't been cleaned since it was hung for the first time.

Free wifi pretty convenient.

It is 15 minutes or less to walk to sule pagoda. Quiet street so not as noisy as central hotels! A tiny bit overpriced, 30usd would be good value for money!

The staff is very friendly and helpfull in this hotel with basic rooms. As all hotels in Mayanmar, Eastern Hotel is seeking the limits of how much Western travellers are willing to pay.
The roomrates are pushing the limits, but they try to make it up on service and cleanness. Though they are not ashamed to charge full price for the room(s) with broken airco.
Basic room in February 2013 was $55. Hotelprices in Myanmar are expected to be raised by 30% in the upcomming rain seasson.

(Experience based on extensive travelling on 5 continents in a wide variety of price ranges.)

First visit to Yangon and happy enough with the eastern

Staff helpful and knowledgable spoke good English

Not in the busiest part of town but enough restaurants , shops etc close by.

As others mentioned generally not easy to find cheap accommodation in Yangon so was reasonably priced despite rooms being pretty ordinary. I get the impression this is what you get unless you go 5 star. Speaking of 5 star the strand is a pleasant 15 minute stroll from here and well worth a visit for a g& t. Check out happy hours

clean and pleasant hotel with very friendly and helpful staff on a quiet side street east of downtown Yangon, about 15min walk eastward from the Sule Pagoda. We paid $5 extra for a top floor room, but is not completely without noise. Conveniently located 1 block from City Mart supermarket (go NW) and across the street from a money changer. Be sure the night in advance to request a Burmese breakfast instead of the standard western. Burmese cuisine has not struck me as so delicious, but worth trying.
