Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Mele Cascades Waterfalls is one of Efate's most popular natural attractions. Only 20 minutes drive out of town, a visit can be completed in just over two hours. There are bathroom facilities available , sitting area, a small cafe and bar on site for purchase of food and drinks. The area is local owned and run by locals. Revenue generated help pay wages for local employees, maintenance and upkeep of the area, community development for surrounding villages and sponsorship of social activities, most especially soccer development programs for youth. Note: Efate is currently experiencing severe El Nino and the once picturesque attraction has very low water levels. This is also causing drastic water supply shortage to villages and its people. To close the business would mean loss of income for many.
Useful Information: Food available for purchase, Bathroom facilities

We loved the waterfalls- enjoying this beautiful attraction is certainly a worthwhile thing to do in Port Vila. It was a real treat for our team of volunteering 13 year olds who had been working so hard for days helping out at a local school, scrubbing walls, pulling weeds, picking up rubbish and donating clothes to the local villagers etc. So when we asked for a small group discount, after explaining the kind contribution our students were making, we were surprised that the new management were too scabby to even give us a tiny amount off the total price. In previous years they were more than happy to give us the advertised "local's price". Will we come back next trip? I don't think so.

We visited the cascades from a cruise ship so here's a tip - don't bother if a ship's in town. No doubt the waterfalls are beautiful and the walk through the tropical bush enjoyable but as the #1 attraction in Port Vila I think the whole ship was there - hundreds of people crawling all over the falls with no room for swimming. Any other time it's probably nice though not worth the $25pp entrance fee I think (esp with a family of 6). The walk is not difficult up the path but the falls require some dexterity and can be slippery. Rock shoes are best but my kids were fine with bare feet. We hired a taxi minibus from just off the ship for $40pp to drive us for the whole day to wherever we wanted to go. We visited the falls, Hideaway Island for nice snorkelling, drove through the largest village in Port Vila (the local kids run along hoping for lollies from visitors), spent an hour in town and then drove up the hills for views before being dropped off at 4pm. The driver was friendly and full of information and we felt he was great value for money, unlike the Cascades.

This was a real highlight of our trip. The cascades are utterly beautiful. Yes, there's stairs; yes, there's a hike; yes, the water is cold; but that's part of the adventure!! At the time we visited I was significantly heavier than I am now (and a smoker, and didn't enjoy any exercise) but I don't remember the walk up to the cascades being super exhausting or overwhelming at all - and my goodness - the view at the end was just delicious! When we get back to Vanuatu, I will definitely purchase a waterproof camera so as to enjoy our happy snaps from all angles.

Thank Jean B
