“Not one for animal lovers”

Small, cheap, clean, this place would have been very good (considering the price) if they didn't have very different attitudes to how to treat animals than we do. Their poor dog was chained 24 hours a day 7 days a week - on a very short chain, I often found it without water (licking the roof off the small kennel it has) - they NEVER walk it (I asked) - in my mind this is cruelty to animals - the festering rubbish tip in the entrance may be a sign of how the locals feel about this place too - I witnessed poor treatment of the ni vanuatu staff (like most places it's not owned local people), it's sad as I don't think the owners realise what they are doing is so distressing for many western travellers, will NEVER go back to this place.

Just spent a week at Blue Pango, enjoyed it and will return.

It cost AU$36 per night (for seven nights) to accommodate one to two people in a self contained room featuring a bathroom, fan, aircon and free airport transfers. It costs a little more per night if you stay less than seven nights.

The room was smallish but clean and serviced daily. We could see the Coral Sea from our bed through the louvred windows and hear it at night as we fell asleep.

This motel is situated at Pango (not surprisingly) which is a short 100 vatu bus ride from Vila.

Don't be put off by the entrance road which is muddy when wet and the sight of the small rubbish heap from the neighbouring student boarding house near the Blue Pango sign. Just down that road, hammocks, sun chairs and good snorkelling await you.

Solomon Lee is your Korean host. He doesn't speak much English but mostly understands if you speak slowly. He is welcoming, courteous and attends to any requests you may have.

There was a surf break on the reef but it would probably hurt if you got dumped on it.

If you stay there you may be woken by the babble of your neighbours on the shared verandah area, ours were early risers and late finishers ..... don't know how they managed it.

A big bonus of Blue Pango is having hot water showers, electricity and mobile phone reception. Much budget accomm in Vanuatu does not have these luxuries. I saw people with laptops taking advantage of the wireless internet too.

There is a hole dug which eventually may become a pool, could take a while though.

If you decide on Blue Pango, ring Solomon direct to make arrangements.

Happy travels,
Jo

My partner and I recently visited the motel to look it over for a future stay. I was looking for somewhere close to the surf and you don't get much closer. From your front door to the water would be no more than 20 metres. The entry to the water might be a bit tricky due to the rocky shoreline but there are plenty of beaches within a minute or less walk and they are really nice and looked pretty safe. The motel rooms are basic but comfortable and the motel is run by a lovely Korean family who have young children and a cute little dog. It feels like a homely litte spot and is very quiet. It's about 150metres off the main road and there are local buses and cabs constantly going into town so transport is not needed. Also next door is Breakas Resort so you can slip over for a flash feed if you feel inclined although I would stock up at the supermarked in town and cook/eat at the motel. The owner quoted us 20 000 Vatu for a week stay for a doube which I think is about $230 Aussie dollars or thereabouts and there is a discount for a single occupancy. Compared to Australian motels it seems expensive for what you get but by Vanuatu and particularly Port Vila standards this place seems good value for money if you want to be right on the water. In a nutshell, it is very basic, very comfortable, very quiet and has stunning water views. Definately worth a look.
