“Perfect location”
Reviewed July 9, 2010

We stayed at Fatumaru Lodge for the first week of our holiday. I travelled with a 14 year old and a 3 year old. It was a prfect location as we were close to town. As soon as you walked up the driveaway a bus would be there waiting for the short trip into town. Easy walk to do but with a youngster it would have taken all morning. When we needed supplies we kayaked into town to the supermarket.

We stayed in the 2 bedroom, I think it was named Louganville. It was a great place to stay. The shower was always hot, the room cleaned each day and the pool was great for the kids. Emily was more than helpful, a wonderful lady in the office. The photos on the website are exactly how Fatumaru looks like. I recommend this place to anyone.

A great place to eat next to the fruit markets is as a restaurant called "Chill", overlooking the water. Large schools of big fish constantly entertaining all the diners. Kids meal around $10 AUD. Anything from pizzas to lobsters.

If staying in self contained buy groceries from Supermarket 2, further down the main street, opposite rental cars.

Art and Craft markets great. The ladies will sew a bag there and then if you want made from other material.

Do take precaution against mosquitos as they do bite often. If you take yourself off to the Secret Garden please make sure you have mosquito repellant as they are EVERYWHERE there.

Last thing to do is to visit a church service. Anyone can get up and tell a story, it was wonderful. One lady told her story of being on an escalator in Sydney for the first time. A guy from Mele village translated for us. It was refreshing to listen to. At the end we made a donation and ever single person stood in line and shook our hands after church.

And last but not least the people from Vanuatu are amongst the friendliest in the south Pacific. Take time to say hello and hear the story.

Fatamaru Lodge was much as we expected. It does not try to be 5-Star or a luxury resort. We were after something reasonably priced and close to town and Fatamaru fit the bill. The centre of town was about 10-15 minutes walk. The pool area was clean and presentable and the room was basic but suited our needs. Possible improvements would include a microwave oven in the room and a better selection of channels on TV. We would consider staying there again.

This lodge is away from the main part of town, it was very relaxing without the hordes of people that you would find at a resort. Very private with only a small number of guests able to stay at any one time. The lodge was well appointed, basic but clean and tidy. The staff were fantastic, they were friendly and welcoming. Air conditioning is a must here, and this worked well even with the extra high ceilings. Only down side would be the steep and slippery driveway, be very careful.

This is the perfect place to use as a stepping stone to all of Port Vila's attractions or just relax. If you want to do your own thing and don't want to be overwhelmed with hundreds of guests and tourists, this is for you. The rooms were basic and well maintained. We usually had our own breakfast from fruits or fresh baked breads we had bought from the amazing market in town. We also had the motel provide breakfast on occasion which was great as well. Most days we would take a leisurely stroll to town for a beer or a meal. It was an easy walk of aound 10 minutes with plenty of stop overs on the way if you got thirsty. If we were tired or carrying things, we just jumped in a bus and paid the requisite 150 vatu. The best thing about the rooms was that they looked exactly like the pictures on the website and to wake up to that view everyday was spectacular. We jumped on buses almost everywhere; Mele Cascades and the Secret Garden combined made a great day trip as was Hideaway Island. We did the round island tour with Gilbert which is not to be missed. Elizabeth and Emily were only too happy to organise our day tours. Make sure you grab Thomas to point you to the local Kava Bar. It's horrible but you wouldn't want to miss the experience. Don't miss the coconut crab at Vlia Chaumieres as well. All in all it was the perfect place for us to stay. Loved it.

My partner and I were very happy to discover that what you see is what you get with Fatumaru Lodge.
The pictures shown on their website are actually a true indication of the rooms and surroundings.

While Fatumaru Lodge offers the basics needed for your stay in Vanuatu, the friendliness of the staff and the wonderful service certainly made our trip that little more relaxing and comfortable.

Fatumaru Lodge is absolutely value for money, however, if you are wanting the "resort" experience with the open beaches, bars etc then this probably isn't the place for you.
The resorts are only a bus ride away and you can visit them for day trips and use the full facilities at most of them, some will charge you a fee to visit so check this out prior to going.

The lodge offers peaceful surrounds, a beautiful outlook and the villas are lovely.
The canoes are free to use, as is the fishing equipment and BBQ. The fridge is always stocked with the local beer and various other drinks for your purchase.

The Lodge is about a 15 minute walk to town and only a bus ride away from everything the Island has to offer.

The best Chinese in town, is at Harbour view Chinese Restaurant, and is directly across and the road and one of the most affordable places to eat on the Island.

Eating out in Port Vila is incredibly expensive and if you are budget conscious, we recommend you take the bus to Supermarket #2 to stock up on food, as the Villas offer 2 hotplates and a microwave if you chose to cook at home some nights.

Fatumaru Lodge was our haven at the end of the day, champagne and nibbles on the balcony over looking the harbour with the water lapping at your doorstep.... what more could you want.

This is truly a special location with a unique experience. Secluded enough to be very private, Proximity to the city centre and the wide variety of restaurants and fantastic staff make Fatumaru Lodge such a special location. The air conditioned room was very comfortable for 4 adults or open the wide front doors and experience the cool evening breeze. The staff were very friendly, proud of their work and ever willing to make travel or tour arrangements.

We stayed in two interconnecting sea front studios, well appointed, giving directly onto the the jetty. At high tide, it was a delight to just sit on the jetty and listen to the sounds of the sea and all the people and kids swimming around the bay and swim ourselves in clear , cool welcoming waters.
Nothing was a problem for Liz and her colleague, so friendly and professional.
