Made a return visit to check the place out. Still good value. Rooms, staff, bars, cafe same quality. Well managed. Convenient location. Lots of choices in the cafe. Late night entertainment. Very attentive staff.

We stayed at the Sportsmen's for just under a month. It's by far the best "value for money" accommodation in Port Vila and perfect for short or long stays, accommodating everyone from the single traveler to couples, backpackers and families. The rooms are simple but everything is spotless and cleaned daily. One of the unique features of this hotel which sets it apart from all others is that they wash and iron your clothes every day free of charge. The clean clothes are neatly folded and always waiting for you when you return to your room.

It's location is perfect right up on the hill across the road from Parliament House. Because of this there is always a cool breeze and one can sit in Emily's 24hr cafe attached to the hotel enjoying a great meal in comfort and with access to the fastest wifi in town. It's location is just a few minutes walk from the centre of town, local markets, the local hospital, supermarkets and right next door to the National Museum and Library as well as rental car agencies such as Hertz, Budget and Avis. It's a short bus ride to everywhere and anywhere in Port Vila and a great base to explore the surrounding beaches and islands.

Bob, the owner, personally introduced himself to us on our first day, as he does to all his customers, and immediately made us feel at home. He went out of his way to make sure that we were comfortable during our entire stay. He is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to "what to do" and "what not to do" in Port Vila. His years of experience as a resident expat has rendered him an expert on how things work (or don't work) in Vanuatu. Our stay in Port Vila was made more enjoyable because of Bob's knowledge and advice. Thanks Bob !

If you are in Port Vila, passing through or staying a while, book yourself into the Sportmen's hotel, have a meal at Emily's cafe and save yourself a lot of money. You will then realise that what you have saved on accommodation can be spent on shopping, holiday activities and exploring the beautiful islands of Vanuatu.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the bar and restaurant area have access to the restaurant and bar's wifi. Rooms 15 and 16 together form a 2 bedroom unit with its own facilities, completely private and quieter as it's on the other side of the building facing the road. There is also a honeymoon suite upstairs with balcony and ensuite.

We recently spent more than 3 weeks in Port Vila and stayed at Sportsmens. Great hotel, clean, quiet, but close to the city and transportation. Helpful and friendly staff. The hotel would suit from backpackers to families.
The owners (Bob and Emily, who became our friends and helped us a lot) are always around, and they know a lot about Vanuatu.
The restaurant serves cheap, but delicious meals, 24/7. Steak, chicken, fish and chips and more..
I would highly recommend both Sportmens hotel and Emily's cafe.

Myself and fiancé have recently returned to England from a three week holiday to Vanuatu. During this time we used the Sportsmens hotel as a base to explore the rest of Efate and some of the outer islands, and I am more than happy to recommend staying here if you are looking for a place to stay for an upcoming trip.
The rooms downstairs are basic but some of the cheapest in Vila and have shared bathroom facilities which I found to be very clean throughout our stay. Upstairs the rooms are of a higher standard, complete with en suite bathroom, fridge and if you're lucky a balcony. Although Emily's cafe if on site and operating twenty four hours a day there was very little noise from this, even at the weekends.
The facilities at the hotel include free laundry service, free wifi and of course the aforementioned Emily's cafe which serves very reasonably priced food around the clock. Everything we ate there was very good and one of  our favourite places to eat in Vila. There is also an ATM issuing Australian Dollars that can then be exchanged for Vatu at the bar, definitely the cheapest way to change money. I have also heard that in the pipeline is the opportunity of cheap fishing charters that avoids the normal extortionate fee of hundreds of Aussie dollars. The boat is still being made but email the hotel to find out dates for when it will be operational.
However, the Jewell in the crown of this establishment is the staff, and in particular Bob the owner. All the staff we found incredibly friendly, helpful and informative. Then there is Bob and his lovely partner Emily. Lonely planet travel guide describe him as larger than life which is a bit of an understatement! He made our trip that extra bit special. He is the type of character who has many fingers in many pies, and having been in Vanuatu for so long has very good local knowledge. Having pulled in a few favours for us he organised significantly discounted trips to outer islands that managed to avoid sharing our experiences with hundreds of other tourists.
In summary this is a cheap, well run friendly hotel with a range of rooms to suit all needs, and is the ideal place to stay when in Vila and wanting to explore the rest of this beautiful country. Bob, Emily and Reece - tankyu tumas!

Well run hotel in Port Vila. Just opposite the Vanuatu parliament house. Good clean rooms at a reasonable price for short stays, young travellers and the single business man. Staff are great. The manager keeps a close eye on all to make sure the guests get the best. 24 hour café attached to the hotel with good selection of meals at good prices.

Thanks Pete for your review...the great thing with the 'open 24 hours' is you have an inexpensive place to stay when you had a 'few too many'! lol.
As one of our regulars, we're glad we are still able to please you.
Thanks again, Bob
