This motel is below international standard, when it comes to amenities and cleanliness. At a rate of roughly $100+, you would expect more, although the rooms are spacious and the kitchenette is appreciated. Internet access is only available in the reception area for a substantial fee. No tv sets in the room, just very basic furniture. The walls would urgently need a repaint, and the bathroom is subpar. For example, the toilet brush holder, I bet, haven’t been cleaned for years. Just appalling! All would require a thorough clean up and redecorating. The pool needs a repaint, too and is by no means attractive. The staff is friendly, and the owner believes, he has a great place. To err is human!

We had stayed here 5 years before and loved it. This time, the shock came with the manager's lethargy and total lack of interest. We had booked a corner upper storey unit with a view. Bad mistake. The traffic noise was horrendous (not the motel's fault of course) but the noise from the wobbling ceiling fan made sleep without ear-plugs impossible - plus we were worried that the whole contraption would fall on the bed during the night. Add to that the tatty and threadbare curtains and the general air of neglect and decay that pervaded the whole place, and you can beleive that it was a fortnight from hell. Sure, we couild have moved out, and in retrospect we should have done so. But it was a matter of cost. I had chosen this place on past experience, so 'caveat emptor' applied.

I'm pleased that Kaiviti is in different ownership, and I hope the new owners are able to bring it up to an acceptable standard. It will be a hard slog indeed but worthwhile, because its position is ideal - although traffic noise is a hard one to combat. Double glazing and full air-conditioning will be a must. Would I recommend Kaiviti? Well, not untill reviews say so, and would I go there again? Not while there are so many other delightful resorts in Vanuatu.

The Kaiviti is a small self catering motel very close to Port Vila centre, we easily walked into town with our 6 and 9 year olds. Staying self catering appeals to us because we can eat when and what we want. We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment over 2 floors, which has everything you need, but be prepared that it is all a bit tired and wornout (the lovely owners are updating steadily). We also had a family room for a few days, which was a reasonable option too.
There is a pool and bar if you want, but we used the facilities at the Melanesian next door mainly. We were out and about exploring Vanuatu, which to us, was the reason for flying to another country, not lounging about by the pool. So, for a convenient base with very lovely staff and all the basics you need, I would recommend Kaiviti.
One downside is that there was a terrible smell in the master bedroom in the 2 bedroom place, I can only think it was rotting carpet or similar under the bed, but as I say, the place is being renovated, so hopefully this will soon be gone.
As for Vanuatu, I cannot praise it highly enough, the people, the sights and the culture. Just go!!!!!

As a family of 5 with 3 teenagers (14,15,16) we spent 3 nts in a 2 bedroom apartment which took up 2 levels with views of the pool area, the harbour and sunsets. At $170 per night for 5 adults we considered it great value. Clean towels were supplied daily and when we requested a plug it was given in pretty good time. A roll-away bed was placed in the lounge area downstairs, while the two bedrooms and bathroom are upstairs. The bedrooms have cupboards and drawers so you can unpack if you want. The lower level, which is actually the second floor is fully security screened allowing the balcony door and windows to be left open for breezes. All rooms are fan cooled and we did give those fans a good workout, but didn't really miss having airconditioning.

While the decor is uninspiring, crockery mismatched and the master bedroom curtains don't quite cover the large window (we just used a safety pin to keep the curtains together when modesty required), we have no complaints. In fact, it was above our expectations for budget accommodation. The pool is a bit worn in places, but was clean and is wonderfully deep at one end and shallow enough to wallow about at the other.

We loved the position for it's proximity to town and eating places. Au Bon Marche 2 is a couple of minutes walk heading out of town and so is La Pizzeria, where we enjoyed lovely pizzas. The Melanesian is right next door if you want to use their pool or restaurants, or have a massage. I had a lovely therapeutic massage with Rina for 3500vt and returned next door to laze by the pool.

The lady owner was very helpful and friendly, giving advice on shopping, transport and helping me call home when I had difficulties.

We had a great time during our stay and the kids were all keen to return for an extra night in the middle of our holiday, which we did...and it felt like we'd never left. We were comfortable and relaxed....it just felt easy.

The Kaiviti Motel was cheap, basic accommodation.

We booked via the www.vanuatu-hotels.vu website. It turned out okay, but we had to pay the full price before we even arrived.

The room we were in was shabby, and there was little privacy as it was a ground floor room with a big picture window. (The 1st floor rooms with balconies looked better).

The kitchen had minimal equipment (eg only two ring gas hobs, no toaster, no electric jug, no oven, no microwave). There was only three sets of crockery and cutlery, even though there were four of us. The kitchen knife was broken and unusable, and I had to ask for it to be replaced. The frypan and pot were dirty and had to be washed before being used. Whenever the shower was used it was difficult to stop water from spraying into the bathroom making everything wet.

Service was polite but not welcoming, and the place seemed to be run on a shoestring (eg had to keep on asking for more toilet paper because a new roll was never supplied when the room was cleaned). When swimming in the evening we asked for the pool lights to be switched on, and were told that the boss doesn't let them turn those lights on.

The redeeming features are the swimming pool which was really good (nice and deep), and it was close to the supermarket, and town. Oh, and it was cheap.
