“Comfortable home”
Reviewed July 20, 2013

I stayed in a studio bungalow for 1 month. This was the best find for value for a safe one person self-contained accommodation close to the hospital (just a few hundred metres walk across the road and through the village) and a convenient and safe walking distance to town. The studio could accommodate up to 2 people. Valerie went out of her way to make me feel at home, even driving guests once to town, providing maps and tips about the local area, organising tours and activities for guests. The gardener would put coconuts and bananas from the garden on the table for the guests. Electricity never went out, the gas stove worked well and water pressure was decent. There was one free load of washing each week. This was not a luxury 5 star accommodation room but very suitable if you are looking for a comfortable home while working in Port Vila. The only critiques I had was that the shower head was cracked, the shower head holder would come apart and the toilet would clog up at times but these were not big problems. It was a great place to call home for 1 month and Valerie and the staff were very accommodating. Would definitely recommend for future guests.

Hi Sandy, Thank you for your review. It was a pleasure to have you and I'm glad that you enjoyed the little extras from our gardens. Thank you for your critique also - it has been rectified.

I have stayed at Tradewinds on a few occasions and always found the rooms to be clean and comfortable. Location is excellent, far enough removed from the main town to avoid traffic noise, but a short walk or bus ride has you in the bustling heart of Port Vila.
Managed by the lovely Valerie, nothing was too much trouble - from arranging a Tanna trip to setting up a surprise day spa visit for my partner - thanks Val.
Yet another wonderfully relaxing break from the crazy reality of the Australian business world!

We spent one month in Vanuatu volunteering at the hospital. Tradewinds satisfied all our needs providing us with a self-contained, 4 bedroom 2 bathroom townhouse in close proximity to the hospital (2 mins walk) and town centre (15 mins walk). This was a short-medium term rental, however the majority of rooms are one-bedroom vilas.

Valerie the owner, was more than hospitable and helped us organise any travel and tours we wanted to do. The views over the lagoon were stunning and it was a much more peaceful and quiet part of Vila to come home to after a long day.

The townhouse was clean, serviced twice weekly and had a well stocked, fully equiped kitchen. The bedrooms were spacious with either a queen bed or two singles. The house could easily sleep up to 8 adults.

The resort itself doesn't have a wide range of facilities, however restaurants and other attractions are nearby. Washing clothes is expensive ($10 per load), however this is comparable to other resorts.

If you're wanting luxury with everything at your doorstep, Tradewinds is not the most suitable, however for longer stays Tradewinds is like a home away from home.

My new husband and I spent six days here after being married in Vanuatu- so one could say, our honeymoon! Coming from a resort after five days to stay at Tradewinds, as a cheaper option for our honeymoon after our wedding.

Firstly-the owner Valerie is lovely and helpful, but as previously stated, the unit was bit tired and in need of updating. The couch was a futon, which we didn't use but to store items off the floor. The wardrobe is open with limited hanging space. Bathroom was alright- water pressure pretty good, though water damage was evident in the woodwork, and kitchen cupboard doors required a screw driver to adjust so that didn't feel like they would drop off the hinge when you opened them. As the owner has stated in her replies to previous posts- work is still to be done!

The trip into town was not much of a problem, as said by other TripAdvisors- taxi or bus is usually easy enough to get once your out in the street. It isn't the quietest place either, as our unit was up the front of the property, near the front fence to the street, so you did hear a lot of the neighbouring activities.

Not to say this accommodation would not suite some travellers, just that I tend to think the photos posted on here were some what deceiving as to the modernness of the units. They looked brighter, and furniture is along the lines of say 'Sams Warehouse' quality. We also found that doing a small shop to utilise the 'Self contained' aspect - not financially worth it, as did not use items and quiet expensive to buy food for short period stays from supermarkets.

My advice would be -Do your research before full payment.

Valerie was lovely and helpful but the 2 bedroom apartment was quite disappointing. Think Aunty Mavis' 1980's beach house. The "couch" was simply a heinous piece of furniture that should never be in ANY form of housing. We stayed in Vanuatu for 2 weeks and stayed at 3 different places. Tradewinds was the last place we stayed, the most expensive and whilst functional, not luxurious at all.

Thank you for your review.
I agree that the resort is looking a little tired and this was, and still is being rectified. I’m sure that you would agree that it would have been inappropriate for repairs and maintenance work to be carried out during the busy January season.

As our staff have always been complimented on the cleanliness and service at the resort, I find your review interesting. This is particularly so, as we also had guests visiting during the same period who run their own cleaning business and who were very impressed with the way the resort was run.
It would have been appreciated if any issues had been raised directly with management.
I am curious however, about a couple of things.
a) We have never classed ourselves as luxurious, -just clean, comfortable and quiet. only 3 – 3½ stars at most.
b) The review says that you travelled solo but stayed in the 2 bedroom apartments. However, we didn’t have any single guests staying in the apartments in January.
c) The criteria for becoming a Senior Reviewer – wouldn’t a Senior Reviewer have much more experience than 6 reviews having only joined Trip Advisor in March this year

We recently stayed at Tradewinds and had a great time visiting Vanuatu. Valerie and her staff are only too happy to make recommendations of what to see and do. Rooms were cleaned every day by the house girls and nothing was too much trouble. Catching a bus into town was easy, and they always dropped you right back at the door on the way home. At 6pm there is a security guard on till the morning. Always felt safe. Visited the village next door and across the road. The locals are so friendly. Would love to visit Vanuatu again soon and would more than happy to stay at Tradewinds again. Loved that the townhouse was self-contained so that if we wanted to cook, we could, although most of our meals were spent visiting local restaurants and eating out.

Room Tip: If you want room to move, stay in the Townhouse. It has four good sized bedrooms, plenty for a fami...

We stayed for two separate nights enroute to different islands. Cheap and comfortable but about a 15 minute walk uphill from town. Any local bus will drop you there for only 150 vatu.

Room Tip: Room 19 was comfoetsble and a bit away from the road
