“disappointed - didn't get any sleep”
Reviewed October 2, 2009

We stayed in a lagoon View studio. The view was wonderful and we did not mind all the steps to get to our room, but it was the noises at night that kept us awake that troubled all of us. I'm not tallking about the roosters or the dogs - they are part of the culture, I mean the dripping plumbing, the noisy fridge, and worst of all listening to the neighbour snore all night and hearing every movement of any chair in the building. The contraction and expansion of the roof in the early hours of the morning put an end to any chance of sleep. The staff were friendly and helpful but often got orders wrong and ran out of basic food and drinks.

Just spent six days there. Four of us chose the lagoon front Villa- queen and ensuite downstairs and queen and bathroom and twin room upstairs.

Perfect for those who want their own self contained apartment. Private, quiet, beautiful ambience and carried and ate our breakfast each morning over on our verandah.

Staff well managed/led by Natalie and Wayne and an owner Peter who is "there" for guests also when in town, as are all staff who are very friendly and locals. They all welcome objective criticisms and are keen to please.

One of the nicest things about our Vanuatu experience was the people - everyone so friendly, trying to please, growing their new country.

We purchased steak from supermarket – big product for Vanuatu and barbecued on home barbecue.

Also two of us had a half day fishing charter (organize by Poppy’s) with Lelepa Island Day Tours n Fishing Charters [--] – 15 metre banana boat plus 40 hp outboard and safety gear and came home with our share of fish – two beautiful yellow tail Tuna. Poppy’s offered to clean and prepare for cooking for us and we took four pieces (sashimi of some) and then barbecued and gave rest to staff. How good is that.

You can walk to town but why would you other than once if you can call virtually immediate taxi for $5 Aust.? Taxi then gives you mobile and picks you up and returns you for same price.

All in all a great week and we would recommend same to anyone.

Just stayed at Poppy's for a week with the wife and daughter, I want to go back she wants to go back and the 13yr old daughter wants to go back to. Stayed in two lots of accommodation while there, the last being a lagoon front cottage. A small intimate resort with awesome staff. Lagoon was good for swimming and great for kayaking. Short stroll into town past really friendly people a couple of shops close to resort as well as a cool little kava bar. While things were a bit pricey you should expect that with everything having to be imported, mind you the local goods were cheap. Sam's tours were a great trip around the island even better once they finish sealing the road. lelepa island is a must see as well. They are laso adding a garden bar which will also add to the resort . Island night is also great for the experience.
we will be back

a tripadvisor member, n.s.w australia, sept 2nd just got back from poppy's on the lagoon vanuatu i was a bit disappointed i didn't expect to have to take my own shampoo for a so called 4half star resort & we had trouble with a leeking tap witch was very annoying at night & had trouble with our spa we told the staff on the first day but nothing was done about it, the room's are a bit tired could do with a refurbisment & if you dont like wind dont stay in the beach front spa room every day is very very windy it would be nice if it's really hot but we didn't have real hot weather so i found it very cool, the staff are really nice & we had some good day trip's that we booked through the office, the around the island trip was great through atmosphere tours if you go to the mele casades i would get the bus not on a tour as we found it wasn't worth the money & we spoke to a lot of people that just took the bus that way you have no time limit, dont get a taxi as to dear get the mini bus that has a big red B on the no plate it's cost 300VT to go into town, & the hill going up to the rd from poppy's is not as bad as some say im 65 & i managed ok, the little french pastry cafe is great for a feed & we also had a nice meal at chill near the markets one day we ate the food at the market's good food & great experience & what wonderful people the ni van's are also the yacht club is good for a drink & to watch the sunset on the whole a great place

Great location, just be prepared for the steep driveway down to the resort, which is full of potholes, and not well lit at night. Ceiling fans not enough during the hot time of the year, fine for May. beachfront not great for swimming, but good for kayaks. Swimming pools are small. Short stroll along to the Meridian hotel if you want a bigger pool. Allow 15 - 20 mins to stroll into town, chat to the locals at seaside village on the way and learn about their culture. If you feel inclined take over some old clothes to give to the local village, or some stationery to give to the local school. I can assure you these will be very much appreciated.

After reading the reviews for Poppy's on the Lagoon I was quite excited about our stay but I have to say that I felt that the rooms were very overpriced for what they were. We stayed in a beachfront bungalow for 4 nights and the cost per night was approx USD $300 per night.

For that price I would expect basic supplies such as shampoo and conditioner. The bed is a small double yet the room is quite large so could easily accommodate a larger bed. The rooms are basic to say the least but they are spacious. The staff are friendly and accommodating.

As I did not see the other accommodation on the Island I cannot fully compare but I think that maybe the standards would be higher in the resorts.

The pools in Poppy's are very small and not that enticing.

That said the setting is beautiful on the lagoon. It is a little trek to the town but not a bad walk and well lit at night. The islanders are extremely friendly and Vanuatu seems very safe.

Overall we found the island to be expensive but it is beautiful and we did some wonderful tours. It seemed quiet when we were there but it does seem to cater to families and couples.

Just back from a week at Poppy's in a Beachfront Spa Bunglow and on the whole really impressed. Location is perfect if you're looking for more than a resort experience - at just five minutes walk into Vila, you're far enough away to just relax and unwind (being lagoon side), but also close enough if you're looking to really experience Vila. Poppy's is definitely better suited to those who prefer to be a bit independant - with excellent kitchen facilities/BBQ area you don't need a restaurant if you don't mind being self sufficient and want to save $$. They offer plenty of light snacks/meals/cocktails and though they take some time to arrive, they do come and very tasty and value for money. Also a good grocery selection if you don't want to walk into town - bread, milk, icecreams, bbq packs etc. Rooms were kept impeccably clean and your privacy is very much respected. We found the main area with the pool/office/bbq/eating area that some of the studios overlook quite loud so if you're looking for quiet/privacy go beach front!! The hill walk out of Poppy's is a challenge, even for the fit - so be prepared!! It takes just a few minutes but is very very steep, and not lit at night, so not great for the unfit unless you can drive out. Once at the top the walk into Vila is quick and a genuine chance to see the residents living as they do. We really felt we saw some of the 'real' Vila thought this, rather than just the 'resort' which was what we were looking for. Side note - there are two stores either side of the road just outside the entrance to Poppy's that offer and expanded offering of provisions. If you're game, go on in and find they're a fully stocked supermarket at a fraction of the price of the supermarkets in Vila. They were pretty suprised to see tourists venturing in but really really friendly! Also, if you're looking for internet, try Numbawan cafe in town - much better range/speed and cheap! We really enjoyed Poppy's. We did feel the staff could have been more welcoming/offering of information, but were ultimatey given the privacy we'd come for and really enjoyed all of the facilities and our stay. Would definitely return.
