My husband and I had a fantastic week on Hideaway Island! Everything was perfect for us. The main reason I chose Hideaway Island was the ease of scuba diving (it has its own dive school) and snorkelling, and we were not disappointed. There were also plenty of other things to do on and near the island and access to the main island was simple and included in the cost of the accommodation. Our bungalow was huge for two people, very clean and quiet with a lovely veranda looking across Mele Bay - just beautiful. Although the menu appeared to be a bit limited, there were specials as well and we never had the same thing twice. We could have stayed longer, but we had booked to go to Tanna and that was fantadtic too!

I spent 5 nights at the Hideaway Island Resort in Oct 2013, near Port Vila in Vanuatu. It was a last minute special offer and a chance to do a few scuba dives in what the internet described as a marine sanctuary. Nice staff and peaceful surrounds aside, the walk onto reef for snorkelers resembled a weapons test site rather than a marine sanctuary for anyone who knows a nice reef. Broken corals and no sizable fish at all. Plenty of small colourfull fish to thrill kids or new comers to a reef environment but if you have seen a nice reef with an array of creatures, you will be disappointed with this place.

The scuba dives were even more sparse. A large Trigger fish was the biggest animal we saw in two dives, barely larger than a watermelon. One diver on a subsequent day saw a turtle and it was big news amongst the dive team, an obvious indication as to the rarity of such a normally common reef dweller. My dive buddy and I promptly took a bus into Port Vila the next day and dived with Nautilis Dive, who were priced the same as Hideaway but far more sophisticated and professional. A wreck and dive and an other were prettier but failed to find anything even half the size of my dive buddy. So if diving is your thing, best to go the extra cost and effort and get out to Santo.

The food at Hideaway was great, the staff friendly and the accommodation only just fair. Without a single comfortable lounge or seat anywhere on the island and wifi that is totally inadequate, you would need to go to Hideaway, simply to hide away.

Room Tip: The Bungalows are spacious and on the windy side of the island which is good as it keeps the room co...

Great little Island getaway. Every one of the staff, from the guys manning the boats, to the bar and restaurant staff, to just those staff you passed wandering, were all amazingly happy, friendly, and certainly made the trip. This is also true of Vanuatu as a whole, but particularly at Hideaway.

The facilities were good, 24hr access to the island by boat was great, food at the beachside bar was good, and never disappointed.

The only gripes were minor - wifi coverage/strength was poor, shower head in bungalow needed replacing

My wife and I have just returned from an amazing week at Hideaway, the location is picture perfect with an amazing lagoon.
The fish and the coral gardens are beautiful, we spent around 5 hours every day snorkelling in awe of this natural wonderland.
The resort facilities are excellent, the food is very good and the staff are very friendly, it was like we were part of the family!!
The managers of the resort, Mark and Sue are terrific, they are visible all day every day and always checking to make sure you are happy and having a good time, this along with the wonderful staff is a very big plus for us, thank you to everyone!
We have been to Fiji and the Cook Islands before this but Hideaway tops them by a mile.
We stayed in bungalow 10 with a beautiful sea views and lovely cooling breezes which made the bungalow very comfortable, the furnishings were good which is all you need on a beach holiday, somewhere to drop your gear of an evening before falling into a comfortable bed.
We cannot recommend Hideaway highly enough, simply fantastic.

Room Tip: The ocean front bungalows are the pick for the cooling sea breezes and views, we stayed in bungalow...

My partner and i have just returned from 2 weeks in Vanuatu with 1 week being spent at Hideaway Island Resort.

Let me preface this review by stating that the main reason i am giving this resort 5 stars is purely for the staff.

We stayed in Bungalow 1 which was located closest to the dive shops in comparison to the other bungalows. This suited us perfectly as the main purpose of our trip to Vanuatu was for a diving holiday.

Owners / management listen up - The following items in Bungalow 1 are in desperate need of replacing:

* Queen size bed - this has been slept in so many times and is so worn out that you can see imprints in the mattress itself. It is not comfortable and needs replacing. A quality nights sleep is so important on holidays. Consider removing the wheels on the future bed as when one person rolls over, the bed moves across the tiled floor.

* Shower head, shower curtain and sink - the shower head is awful. I have had better showers camping! Only half of the holes work (if that) as it is severely corroded. The shower head is at a low height making showering for taller people difficult. The water pressure was hopeless as was the hot water at times. When there is pressure, the waters exits the shower recess and floods the floor. The shower curtain is horrible. Mouldy and unhygienic. This needs replacing. The clam shell sink is deteriorating and upon closer inspection appears to be very unhygienic. It is also at a height that would make it difficult for children to use to wash their hands and brush their teeth. Owners should consider a complete bathroom renovation for Bungalow 1 to be completely honest.

* Bathroom was not roofed - i know this is an odd comment however the bathroom in Bungalow 1 is not roofed. What this means is that you can hear everything. Not pleasant no matter how close you are to your travelling partner.

In saying these things, we did not stay at Hideaway to spend all day in our Bungalow. If this is your plan, do not stay here. In my opinion, it is not even a 3 star resort.

The staff at reception and the restaurant were fantastic. Special mention to Alice, Stella, Rachel and Anton.

The boys at the Dive Shop are amazing and really made our holiday. Special mention to Brian and Joka (apologies for spelling). The snorkelling at the front of the resort was good but doesn't compare to the scuba diving. Night dive was great also.

The area for drying your scuba gear was pretty average. The scuba gear has no opportunity to dry as it is small and completely covered with no sunlight or wind reaching it. We decided to dry our gear on our balcony as this worked a lot better. We were also concerned that there was a large group of teenagers on a school excursion to Hideaway who may have used our personal gear rather than the hire gear as it was all grouped in together and didn't want this to happen.

The food at the restaurant was good. The menu is very limited though especially when you are staying here for a week. Service was slow at times however mainly due to day trippers from the cruises over running the island. Food was not badly priced either. Chicken curry was excellent and mediterranean chicken and cous cous salad was really good also. Cooked breakfasts were nice too.

A small mention about the cruise day trippers, it was so nice when they went home for the day! We found them to be pushy, rude and generally overtook the island from mid morning to late afternoon when they were in port. Management need to consider increasing staffing numbers on these days particularly at the restaurant as we had to wait over 1 hour for 2 burgers for lunch on these days. There are also not enough pool chairs to go around and you simply cannot lay your towel down on the ground as it is coral not sand. This is not fair to the people staying on the island.

We attended the Melanesian Feast and were disappointed that the food was not cooked the traditional way in a 'hangi' (in the ground). Food was good though.

We were informed by fellow travellers that the resort has new management which recently took over. Hopefully they can iron out the wrinkles and make the necessary changes to keep people coming back here.

Would we come back and stay again? Yes (just not in Bungalow 1) and mainly for the excellent dive sites and staff who make this place memorable for the right reasons.

Room Tip: Steer clear of Bungalow 1. Needs renovating / updating and gets no afternoon breeze. No air con eith...

My wife and I have vowed to never visit Vanuatu after our experience of 2 weeks at Hideaway Resort at Vanuatu. We stayed there 2 years ago for a couple of days and absolutely loved it. This time there was new managers and chefs. The rooms are rather tired and desperately need some work on them. The room at Bungalow 1A had a gap between the main bedroom windows of about 5cm. This same gap was there 2 years ago. Had to ask management to fix it. 3 times they tried to put up a screen over it. Couldn't get it right, so my wife shoved a towel in the gap to stop bugs, rain and the cold at night coming in. It rained there once heavily and the room started to leak, the bottom right corner of the room had an ankle-deep puddle. There was a rat that liked to steal the soap. Told management and they laid out rat baits. Actually saw the rat a couple of nights later. It didn't worry about the rat bait, but it did take a fancy to empty soft drink cans and soap. A big black crab decided to visit one night. Was shocked to see it crawl from underneath the sofa between our legs. We had a problem with ants one night. There was also a strong sewerage smell coming from the wash basins and out side at times. The water pressure from the shower was practically non existent. There was no cold water from the shower, only hot water. The water went off completely a couple of times. 4 days into the trip we became violently sick. After a few days of living in bed or on the toilet, asked reception if management could see us. When they arrived, we asked if someone could go into town to get us some Imodium. Instead they gave us there own supply of Lomotil. It seem too hard for them to go into town. So for the last 5 days of our trip we were sick, trying to get better for the 2 plane trips home. Management never once approached us when were sick to ask how we were going. You would think they would ask how our well being was going since we were staying for two weeks and to keep us away from the healthy visitors. They saw us a couple of times towards the end of the trip and ignored us. Now onto the meals. Of a night time when only the guest were being catered for (up to a maximum of 30 sometime) it took well over an hour to receive your meal. Portion size (steak) was not uniformly the same. There was only one steak dish, one person might only get half the size of another person. If you ask and paid for an main course size meal, sometime you only received an entrée size. The descriptions of meals were not specific. There was a pasta dish that only said fetta, olives, tomatoes and chicken or prawns. The cooks for some reason liked to serve chili with the meal? If you asked for specifically no chili (because your stomach was still sick) guess what, you received chili.
Ok, we will give some praise to the resort. The staff did try to be helpful; and the snorkelling was good.
Overall only visit the place for a day trip for the snorkelling.
