We have been coming to Mele Bay to dive pretty much every year since 2007 - it is just so convenient and easy to do. On this our 6th visit, we went with a new operation in the area. The diving experience suddenly jumped up a number of notches and was as good as, if not better than our previous trips to the Barrier Reef and Milne Bay in PNG.
Devil's Point Dive is not actually in Mele Bay, but a short way around Devil's point, but still within 20 minutes or so from Port Vila and the airport. We stayed at a self catering property close to the dive operation so could just walk in and out at our liesure. Some divers came from further afield, either driving themselves or being picked up and dropped off by the dive crew. There was the option of having dinner at the operation and as we were so close we decided to let ourselves be fed in an informal and friendly manner. The indoor / outdoor kitchen by the sea provided great meals and was a wonderful way to spend the early evenings and then we sat around the fire under the stars and talked of many things, of dives, of creatures deep, of cabbages and kings... Nothing was too much trouble and we were made to feel very special in a personal and intimate way.
The dive side of things was a complete joy. The equipment is new, inline computer on every regulator, BCDs specifically for gents and ladies, all very well maintained between dives, a new boat, fast and very easy to get back into after a dive. All we needed to do was get ourselves on and off, all equipment was handled by the crew. This is a very friendly and competent team, they have worked together for a long time, there is decades of local dive experience. They have great eyes and know where interesting things hang out - little clanks on the tank call your attention to all manner of interesting things. There was never pressure to end a dive, and my log shows most dives were over an hour. Chris my partner gets uncomfortable sooner than me and she was coming back to the boat about 10 minutes before me; no problem, no fuss, quick dive buddy reassignment and everything was sweet.
Between dives there were drinks, sandwiches and fresh local fruit, pawpaw drizzled with lime is just delicious and I am not normally a pawpaw fan - there is something different about the local variety.
The water clarity and variety of sea life is terrific, there are fans, soft corals, caves, caverns, swim throughs, dazzling white sand beds, I have been home almost a week now and every night so far I have been back there in my dreams. I can't wait to go back again!!
