Only recently opened (Nov 2011) The Summit is a delightful experience. An easy drive, just 10 minutes out of Port Vila, and easily accessed by Bus or Taxi, if you are not driving yourself. It really is "the summit", as the views driving up the hillside attest, sweeping over Port Vila and beyond.
The Summit gardens are gorgeous, broken up into themed "rooms", each taking advantage of the micro climate that the escarpment creates - lush planting of tropical orchids, cordylines, crotons, bromeliads and ferns, then giving way to a bamboo garden, a top the escarpment the climate supports the growing of roses, then further along, a feast of cacti and succulents, and even a temperate wooded area.
Under construction are "Vanuatu" themed gardens, and essential oils gardens.
Knowledgable guides are available, or you can happily stroll along by yourself. Be sure to make a couple of visits during your stay, the breeze and views are lovely. If you do plan to make a few visits, keep hold of your original receipt to gain free entry.
We enjoyed both morning tea (coffee and cake 600Vt) and a light lunch, at the Summit cafe. Fresh salads, but with perhaps just a little too much dressing. Very friendly and welcoming staff, with a changing menu depending on what is available and in season.
The distillery is very interesting, again with knowledgable staff, happy to answer questions about the production process of their lovely range of soaps, candles and oils.
