“Great place to rest up”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 27, 2014

Our 7 day holiday at breakas was fantastic the staff were extremely helpful, all tour bookings and self guided trip advice that was given was spot on, without there assistance our island experience would have missed the gloss. Our room was a perfect addition to the island experience and very well designed for the warm climate, the room was not air conditioned and although I was initially concerned it may have been to warn it was no problem each night we experienced a perfect light ocean breeze, very comfortable and no TV, the missing TV I did not miss. Food at the resort was great quality both dinner and breakfast very nice. Each night the resort had entertainment arranged anything from island dancers to local bands, very well organized. The location of the resort is about 35mins walk from town (yes we walked it) however jumping on the local island bus system will have you there in 5 mins, no problem with transport around town because no matter were you are the buses find you and at 150VT per person to travel anywhere around town it's super affordable to use. I really have to thank Roy for the great 'out of town' advice, our self guided tour of the islands north was great, real nice location to travel through and the local were super happy to greet you and have a chat. Another special thanks to Dave the man who kept us entertained at night and went out of his way to allow us to experience local island cava bar. Thanks Breakas for a great time was fantastic experience

Hi Brett B, very glad you chose Breakas to kick back and enjoy a bit of downtime and relaxation.

We like to think we are far enough away from Port Vila to feel like you are on your own little island but close enough ( few minutes by bus) to get into town and see the sites. This proved to be exactly right for you guys.

Thanks again for the wonderful review

Gat accommodation and good location. The beach can be a bit too shallow at times but head out a bit and the reef gets deeper and snorkelling is a lot better.

Food was great, only had one bad one served up. Tomato soup looked like slightly tinted hot water (I didn't say anything to anyone from Breakas, so I blame myself), but all other food was excellent. Don't do the tomato soup and all will be good.

Entertainment each night was excellent, they go out of their way to keep all guests entertained. Roy, the GM, was funny and on top of the game. He works crazy hours and always seems to appear when the slightest thing looks like going pear shaped, which it never did.

Will defini9tley come again.

Tip: choose your fare carefully some are not located in ideal spot.

We had fare 51 back row of the garden views. It was a great spot and the noise of nature around us was fantastic. Housekeeping did a great job, and nothing was a problem.

Use the buses they are cheap and always around.

Room Tip: Chose one not in traffic areas

We could not recommend this resort enough!!! My boyfriend and I absolutely loved the week we spent at Breakas. We particularly enjoyed Breakas because it allowed us to experience the 'real' Vanuatu i.e. beach huts, friendly locals and beautiful food. It isn't a huge resort with fancy air-con rooms and kids running around, but that's why we loved it.

Staff
The staff at this resort were absolutely wonderful. They will always greet you with a friendly smile and hello no matter what time of day. Reception staff were very helpful, they were more than happy to call the tour companies and confirm pick up times or even restaurants to make reservations. We didn't have to use our mobiles once which was fantastic! The manager, Roy, was also very helpful. Our shower wasn't draining properly one morning so we told reception and Roy organised to fix it straight away. Frita is the person to talk to if you are wanting to book tours. We booked our tours before we left so we didn't need Frita's help quite as much as some others but she was more than happy to help if we had any questions. We just have to mention Annie and Jocelyn because we loved them so much!!!

Facilities
My jaw hit the floor as soon as I saw the pool... it's amazing!!! The pool is a perfect temperature, not too cold which was nice. A great place to relax and drink cocktails while watching the sunset. The beach is a bit rocky, it's best to wear reef shoes or flippers (the hotel have some you can rent for free). On a nice day the reef looks amazing. The water is a great temperature and we loved sitting in the water and watching the local kids surf all afternoon. Wifi is a bit hit and miss - it works fine at reception but we didn't get any wifi in our fare. We payed $35 to use wifi for the week but we probably didn't end up getting our moneys worth. The hotel offers free hire of reef shoes, flippers, snorkel gear and kayaks. Just note they do require a deposit of 5000VT but you get that back when you return the gear.

Fares
We stayed in beach front fare number 32 and it was beautiful. We had a perfect view of the sunset so we spent every afternoon drinking cocktails on the beach chairs out the front of our room. It really was magical. Request fares 22-32 if you can. The rooms themselves are very basic - just a bed, desk, sun bed and bathroom. The outside shower is cool though!! Plenty of insects, geckos, cockroaches and crabs in the fares, but what else can you expect from a room on the beach.

Food
Our first night we ordered the seafood platter for two and that was one of the best decisions of the holiday!! It was absolutely amazing. Huge amount of seafood and fantastic flavours. They also had dancers from the Banks Island who put on a great show, very entertaining! We hung around the resort on Wednesday night for the Melanesian feast. There was SO much food, we just piled our plate with a little bit of everything and came back for our favourites. The food was great, we were so happy we got to try some local food. We got to watch some great local entertainment over dinner also. Thought I'd mention the breakfast - we were under the impression that we got eggs and bacon etc. but they only provide fruit, cereal, pancakes, pastries, toast, muffins and juice (no hot food). Mind you the fruit is beautiful and fresh but we were disappointed because we didn't realise you had to pay extra for a hot breakfast.

Transport
Transport into town couldn't be easier. The resort is in the ideal location - just far enough away to feel secluded but close enough to get into town easily. We didn't wait longer than 2 minutes for a bus to pick us up off the street. Don't pay more than 150VT per person for a bus - this is a standard fare and they will take you anywhere around town. Any further and the fare jumps up to 500VT per person. When I say bus I am referring to a mini van. These buses are much cheaper than ordering taxis which can charge you up to 2000VT for a ride into town. If you are wanting to day trip around the island it's best to rent a quad bike or motor bike. You can rent a quad bike for as cheap as 4500VT for the day which is far cheaper than renting a bus to drive you around for a day (about 9000VT).

Tours/Tips
Buy a GoPro before you go!! If you are into adventure and are keen to go on lots of tours and ride around the island a GoPro comes in very handy. Many of the other couples we met wished they had bought one before they left. We recommend the Hideaway Island tour - they cover your entry, cost of snorkel gear, lunch, glass bottom boat tour, and the best of all they take you off the shore on a snorkel safari where you are swarmed by fish!! Definitely the best snorkel site in Port Vila. We also really enjoyed Coongoola Cruise, and the Cascade Waterfall Abseil.

Room Tip: Beachfront rooms are beautiful!! Fare 32 is in a perfect position to watch the sunset.

We stayed 4 Nights in a Garden Bungalow , I loved the look of the bungalow with its own little balcony ,We did not have neighbors next door for the first day so privacy was not an issue ,but on day 2 people moved into the bungalow either side of us and we could hear every word . Fortunately We had good weather so we didn't spend much time in our bungalow.
Our shower was hit and miss hot water one day cold the next .

We ate dinner at Breakers every night the food was excellent and every night enjoyed different entertainment . All staff were very polite .Security are helpful and vigilant we felt safe at all times.

Continental breakfast had a choice of cereals, toast, fruit yogurt .cake tea and coffee I Could not believe the price we paid for this (2000vt per person) my tea, toast and fruit cost $25 AUD, per person. wish I had checked first .

Resort is child free which was really nice ( love kids I have 4 ) but aah! sooo peaceful

If you want to take a tour around ask the resort to negotiate a price for you , We got ripped off by a bus driver who charged 5000 vt for a 1 hr tour of the town and he stopped and picked up passengers along the way ,
The staff at the resort were upset to here we had paid so much .

The staff are so lovely they are a credit to the resort.

My partner and I stayed between the 8th- 15th of February. I have to say the service was 5 star quality and the food was amazing, but for reason my partner had some prawns one night he thought was a bit dodgy but I was fine lol.

I have to commend Roy on his fantastic service, if we had an issue he fixed it. The shower head kept falling down so I just mentioned it to him and it was fixed the same day. If we wanted to book something or had questions we went to Frita, who is amazing and made our trip so much easier with bookings.

Only downsides was the tiny ants that seem to get in everywhere and everything! But can't really be helped! Also, the room lighting can be improved a bit as I found that being under the big tree we had very minimal natural light and found that we had to use our phone torches to look for things in the room at night. One more thing! You may want to invest in more M sized flippers for the tiny female feet because they seemed to be always out :)

Price was reasonable for what we got, try getting a cocktail anywhere in Australia that actually had the same amount of alcohol in it for the same price. Not gonna happen! The seafood, Omg the lobster and coconut crab was amazing! Was a lot cheaper too compared to Brisbane for what you get (do see the photos!)

Overall experience was just amazing. Definitely be recommending the resort to anyone who actually want to experience Vanuatu for what it is (friendly people, minimal distractions, free entertainment every night, the temperature) with NO CHILDREN - instead of a fancy, fully equipped hotel that has children running around everywhere and screaming.

To the idiot that was complaining about the local children, seriously, you could barely hear them and it's not like they were running and screaming through the resort and bomb diving in the pool. They are the locals and they were respectful of the rules and pretty much disappeared as soon as the sun went down. Get off your high horse! I live next door to screaming children and I was in heaven at the resort because I didn't have to hear them, anyone who knows me would have been amazed that I even said that. So lay off the local kids.

I want to thank all the staff at the resort for making our first trip to Vanuatu a most memorable experience. Wish I could have enjoyed more kava! Until next time!

This was our 15th visit to Vanuatu and our first stay at Breakas. Firstly let me say the local staff were helpful, friendly and hard working. All of our requests were met with a great smile and done in an efficient manner. The resort itself is truly lovely nestled on a lovely beach with a very nice pool and the accommodations in native Fares were kept clean and tidy even though these rooms are in need of some minor up grade work. The food and alcohol prices were quite expensive if compared to other establishments in Port Villa which is just a short Bus trip away and highly recommended for great dinning.
Now for the negatives the management is not of a standard you would expect from a an establishment which says it prides itself on being devoted to delivering a high quality holiday experience. The first night we were there we attended the bar area and at the end of the bar was a woman who was drinking white wine and talking very loudly( we later came to find out she was the manager) she didn't even take the time out to introduce herself to the new guests but was more interested in telling anyone who listened that the resort was in receivership and that she was head hunted to fix up the resort. She then informed the guests that her idea to fix the resort was to increase the prices by 100 percent so that she could give the banks an indication the resort was improving. When we were there only about a third of the rooms were occupied it seems this manager has no idea about the principles of management. This manager subsequently went on holidays if the resort was in such a financial position the manger should have stayed and fixed the problem. A few days into our holiday we returned to the resort after a night out in Port Villa and were met in the lobby by a male person ( who later became known to me as the replacement manger) and asked what I was doing at the resort. Exact words " have you come to have a look people" with this statement I was taken a back and replied no we are guests at the resort with this he mumbled something which could not be understood and walked off. A few nights later we again returned to the resort with other guests to have a cocktail at the bar when we were met by another female person who is still a mystery to me who said the bar is closing this at 9pm on a Friday night with some coaxing we were given our cocktails, told no more drinks and we had to take them and drink them out of the bar. We all shook our heads laughed and put it down to another experience of poor management.
Let me again say the local staff were excellent and very friendly and we hope the resort finds better management so it remains open for our next stay. And yes we would stay at Breakas again if it is still open. Please don't take this criticism poorly as it is meant to help the resort remain viable and open. Good management comes at a price and good management has good ideas it seems the only ideas this management team has are poor and by increasing prices wil only fix the short term problem higher occupancy and lower prices means success.
