“Breakas is paradise...almost.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2012

My wife and I stayed for a week at Breakas for our wedding September 2012. When we arrived a number of us were greeted in the foyer by the owner, George, who was covered in sweat and looked quite flustered, but appeared to genuinely care about whether we knew where everything was, the activities, and the best way to get to town and back. The entrance and foyer is just spectacular and was a welcome start to the week. The pool, the restaurant and the open-air couch area is bare metres from the white sand and crystal blue water and the sight of it all put us into such a relaxed mood. The bungalows are skirted by beautiful tropical gardens divided by sand pathways that are shaded by tall palm trees. The staff constantly raked the sand to keep it nice, and swept the sand from the steps...everything was always so pristine and natural-looking.

A sore point for us was how little any of the staff cared that we were getting married there in just 2 days....we were put in bungalow 104 which is literally 5 footsteps from the bar and restaurant , and my request to move to anywhere that was further away for the wedding was met with a casual and indifferent 'no'. At night time and again at 530am the noise of the pool table, staff laughing and talking, even the clink of utensils and grinding of table legs kept us awake (the bungalows are open-air so you cant "sound-lock" yourselves into the room).

The staff got better, and the food was beyond good, albeit the same price as Sydney restaurants. The Ni-Vanuatu people (the locals) were incredibly friendly and seemed permanently relaxed and happy 24/7 in all situations........Perhaps too relaxed sometimes, as cocktail orders were often forgotten-about (occasionally there were small queues of disgruntled people at the bar), a couple of food orders took more than an hour to appear, and requests to check on the delayed drinks and food were met with more casual indifference and sometimes no result. For basic requests like putting tables together though....the staff leapt into the task with vigor and would often put them together in anticipation of our meal.

In terms of the ocean, the coral is mostly dead due to the tsunami a few years ago but there are patches of regrowth and the fish life is still there. If you snorkel swim all the way out to the reef wall (dont do it during the rip-tide!) there is a bit more fish and some coral. However, the water is waist deep all the way to the wall so its incredibly relaxing to just sit in the warm water and contemplate.

Thankyou to the staff for granting my request to put flowers and tea-lights in our room on the wedding night, it was quite magical. And a big thankyou to Manu our local driver who took us everywhere at any hour (he is a legend and his van is the only modern one we saw! please ask for him at the desk!! His number is 5974092).

Overall the resort is spectacular...just dont stay in bungalow 104 or 103.

Room Tip: Stay away from Bungalow 103 and 104....beachside bungalows 20-40 are by far the best ones. The garde...

My husband and I stayed at Breakas Resort for 6 days, in September 2012. We had fairly good weather throughout, and came home feeling very satisfied about our vacation. The accommodation at Breakas is so cool - keeping with the island theme, but still retaining class & sophistication. Our king size bed was perfect, and the outdoor shower area (with coral rock walls) was a sweet surprise. The included breakfast is to die for - we did not want for anything else. And every other meal that we ate at the resort restaurant was delicious and lovingly prepared. The staff are very friendly, and local people are very polite & sweet too. Although things do run at 'island speed' - so be sure to reset your expectations BEFORE you step off the plane :) The location of Breakas is perfect, because I did not like the town area (quite dusty & dirty). It's just too easy and comfortable to laze around the resort pool, or by the beach. It was also super handy that the local dive shop uses the resort pool for free 'scuba intro' sessions. By the way, the pool is very deep and big - plus no kids!! There are also two cheeky cats that hang around the resort, and they keep the guests entertained with their charm. All these little things added-up to a very memorable time. Well done Breakas :) You really did delight and surprise us!!!

I decided to buy my girlfriend a holiday for xmas last year, after hunting around I decided on Vanuatu. I have been to Vila before but not for a holiday, after searching through the options I decided to go with Breakas and I wasnt dissapointed!

The location is the best part of the resort, private location right on the beach! The sunsets overlooking the bay/beach were fantastic (and well after a cyclone the are spectacular)! Romantic dinners by the pool and on the beach, private fares (bungalows) and jungle gardens were all beautiful! The entertainment through the week was great, they really know how to entertain their guests...

Buses were always going past so to get back into Vila was no problem. Best idea if you want some souvenirs is to find out when a cruise ship is coming in, go down to the docks in late afternoon around 3pm to pick up some bargains, huge markets down there. The markets in town are also great, they are all friendly! There are heaps of eating choices in Vila, go for a walk and see what takes your fancy!

Overall it was a great holiday and i would go back to Breakas!

Awesome location, perfect for relaxing, very good hosts George and his team. During the trip, everyday wanted to come back to the resort and do nothing but relax in pool, or beach, bar area.

Rooms are airy and well maintained. Prefer the beach front ones, they are the best.

Only advice to the team would be to introduce more vegetarian food options in the menu. I did not want to eat the same thing everyday.

Room Tip: Beach fronts have awesome views.

Lovely bungalows with fantastic outdoor shower and comfy verandah. Beach is great to look at but we wouldn't swim there (others did - there is a long shallow section and then an area with rips where we witnessed a rescue). Infinity pool very pretty as are dining areas, especially when eating on water's edge by candlelight. Good hammocks and lounges. Food quite good but pricey. The entertainment/local dancers etc were great if you like that kind of thing... It's not really our bag though. This is good quality accomodation in a scenic location, but we personally prefer places with a bit more character and quirk.

Room Tip: Water view worth the extra, garden view a little arid looking.

Thank you to George & all of his staff for looking after us on our first visit to Vanuatu. The setting is stunning, the food & cocktails divine & the entertainment is lots of fun. We would recommend anyone going to Vanuatu to stay at the Resort. George & his staff made everything easy for us. Frita is a real asset, Mantai is just lovely & the massage ladies very friendly & we felt very safe & secure there. Remember, you can do as much as you like or as little as you want. Cheers, Dean & Denise from NZ, September 2012.

Room Tip: Stay in the Resort (not Surfside) and make sure you get a Beach Front room - they are delicious.

Stayed in Number 5 Fare for 9 nights. Arrived late (12.30am sat morn) & even though we missed out on the usual welcome, we were greeted by 4security men who welcomed us & took our bags to our room. We believe our fare was the best spot in resort ! Staff all fabulous & accommodating. Room cleanliness excellent. Facilities all to a good standard. Entertainment each night was good. The ladies in the massage hut had treatments to rave about. Guest relations officer, Frita went above & beyond the call of duty to help guests. She deserves a payrise!! Pango Village walk really appreciated & got to see village life. Loved visiting local school & Kindy & wonderful to know that the owner of Breakas, George helps extensively within the local village. Enjoyed the peaceful surrounds especially not having any young children at the resort. We called into Warwick Le Legon & although it's well catered to for families it made us immediately appreciate the quiet & relaxed environment of Breakas. Meals all good but we did enjoy going to town a couple of nights just to try different food. We were very fortunate as we had excellent weather for the week & we had been told it'd rained for 3 wks prior to our arrival. We heard a rooster crowing only one morning & even that was comforting. There are a cpl of resort cats which came to visit & being animal people we were happy for one in particular to come visit & even have a daytime sleep in our room, but they weren't a pest & moved on quickly if needed. The only constructive criticism we would like to pass on, is to maybe consider somehow making the reef walk a roped area so that the coral could possible start to regenerate. I'm not sure how the resort could police guests walking willy nilly out from the resort & being conscious of the local environment they may have already discussed alternatives ? Otherwise it was pure magical for my friend & I. Defiently book a beach front fare.. it's worth the bit extra ! Thank you Breakas staff for a memorable stay. Congratulations on running a wonderful holiday getaway!
Vanuatu is a great destination & we'll be back to explore more of the islands .
