Reviewed August 31, 2010

Shower was dirty & it blocked every day, shower curtain had holes in it, bathroom door wouldn't close, no hot water in the morning, mattress was so old it made our backs ache. Paid extra for an airconditioned room but they didn't give us a remote & we couldn't turn it on (therefore room was very hot). Internet access was advertised as free but that didn't work either. Looks much more run down than their photos on their website. Central location.

Hotel is pretty central (hard not to be in Port Vila), but not close to the beach. Not ideal for a leisure traveler who wants to chill out on the beach. Room was OK, the bathroom was a bit disappointing (shower wasn't the cleanest, bathroom door wouldn't even close). It is also right opposite the markets, so don't expect to sleep in...

We stayed here on two separate nights during our recent holiday throughout Vanuatu while we waited for morning flights out of Vila to other islands.

City Lodge is a very good place to stay if you are transiting through Vila or need a place to stay for a night before heading off elsewhere.

The rooms are clean, practical and among the cheapest in town, and the location is second to none, with all restaurants and other attractions easily reachable by foot. The exterior is a little (maybe a lot) shabby, but the interior is fine.

The televisions pick up the limited local channel, and once Chinese channel (CCTV), which is kind of fun. A lot of the clientele appear to be from China. Free wireless is also good, although the signal was not strong enough from the rooms, and we had to go to the reception to access the internet.

As a male same-sex couple travelling together, we also had no problem getting a double bed, which was good. Not that we would have settled for singles, but at least the staff are relaxed about such things.

For the price you pay here, I think this is the best budget option in Vila.

This is a very basic hotel with limited facilities, but it is very cheap for Port Vila accomodation and it is located perfectly to explore the city. We stayed there for a total of 8 nights over two different visits in the city. The staff are fantastic; they were helpful with every request.

The rooms themselves are very hot. Every room has at least a ceiling fan, and air-con rooms are available, but they are so small that the heat doesn't escape. The rooms away from the street are best as they are relatively quiet, whereas the street side rooms have very little noise reduction. The rooms are serviced, but irregularly. They were clean upon arriving, but after 5 days in the room it had been cleaned only once at the very beginning. Although this normally wouldn't be a big issue, as said before the rooms are very small, and the sheets could use a change after a couple of nights in the heat and humidity (especially considering we were there at the start of summer).

The only other issues we had were with the ensuites, which we had in both of the rooms we stayed in. Both of them had doors which were difficult and very noisy to open and close. The first of the rooms particularly so, as it would often jam badly when just an inch or so open. The shower curtains were very old and showing some signs of mould, but fortunately the rest of the ensuites didn't have any mould growth or cleanliness issues we could see.

Basically, City Lodge is an excellent base of operations for looking around Port Vila, and a cheap option for anybody just passing through.

I heve stayed in City Lodge only 2 nights but the room was very small, smelly , dirty
and noisy ( I guess that is expected if you pay only Au $40 p/night ).The shower was blocked and not working properly, but on the good site the location is smack bang in the middle of the town- oposite the friut market ( access by staircase only ).Staff was fffff ...antastic, funny and very friendly, no problem in checking in after 10pm.

My husband and I stayed at City Lodge for about 5 nights during July. It's arguably the nicest budget hotel in Port Vila. Emphasis on budget.
Positive feedback:
-Room was cleaned everyday, towels replaced, new toilet rolls, etc.
-Staff were very friendly.
-Conveniently located across from Au Bon Marche and the fruit market, cheap, delicious meals served there, and close to Kava Bar.

Room for improvement:
-Contrary to what was advertised in the two rooms we had there neither TV only picked up more than one channel and was not in colour.
-Reading lamps not in every room.
-Very noisy during the night besides Sundays nights.
- Beds clean and big but mattress hard.

We stayed 2 nights upon arrival and made our further plans from here. It was a very basic but good stay. The hotel is right opposite the Port Vila Market and thus in the most crowded places of town with loads of traffic during daytime, overfilled vans and trucks, but in a colorful way and as friendly as everything in Vanuatu.

Luckily, our room faced away from the street. Our room did wasn't air conditioned, but there was a ceiling fan to make the temperatures bearable. It was very small and we could just maneuvre about once inside. The bathroom door was sliding at best, and often not at all, so the handyman must have left the building.
The staff did their best to keep ants out, apparently that is a problem so close to the market. It never felt untidy.

Stay here anytime, but two days is enough.
