Room Tip: Blue house has always been a favourite of mine especially when there's not much travellers and a...

I stayed here for almost 4 weeks with 3 friends. It was a mix of good and bad experiences. We had made our booking for the greenhouse through hostelbookers for 4 weeks, but upon doing that we got told by Toni that this room did not exist and we found some outdated room. He made it seem as if it were our fault and was quite rude about the whole situation. If he has rooms available on hostelbookers he should make sure that everything is up to date. Why would I ever think to second guess whether an available room on hostel bookers is still in date?

Anyhow long story short, when we arrived at the guesthouse we got put in these "non-existent" rooms and they looked like they were an outdoor prison. It was the tiniest room outdoors with fire ants crawling everywhere and the shower and toilet were also outdoors with a disgusting amount of insects and a non-existent amount of light.

Toni was not at the guesthouse when we first arrived so we had to wait for him to come back to discuss where we would actually stay. When he did arrive, he once again told us that we booked a non-existent room and he would show us the rooms we would prefer to stay in. In the end we moved rooms into the yellow house. He has 3 houses: blue, yellow, green. Blue is the most like a hostel, with dorm beds. Yellow is a private house with 3 bedrooms each suited for 2 people, a living area, and a kitchen. One of the bedrooms is ensuite but this is more expensive. This was where we stayed. He advertises this as the place most medical elective students stay. He gave it to us for T$25 each per night.

I would say the yellow house is 10x nicer than the green house, and still probably nicer than blue. The blue is the main house and if you are coming as one or two people it is good for price, but for a long term stay the yellow house is nice for the living area, especially if there are 4-6 of you.

We had great interactions with the staff. Mone and Peter are probably 2 of the nicest people we met during our stay in Tonga. Mone pretty much runs the place. He is an absolute sweetheart! Peter is the driver and is super cool. You will only truly be able to appreciate how awesome they are by meeting them yourself.

Our interactions with Toni were hit or miss. Some days he was really quite pleasant to be around. In particular, we all really enjoyed his tour of the island. However, there were other times where he really touted heads with us. When we complained about the cockroaches we were finding on a daily basis in our house, his response was: you can't help it. Even in top hotels in London they are everywhere. Frankly this was not the response we needed when we were faced with numerous Mosquitos, fire ants, millipedes, and cockroaches everywhere in our house. But bless Mone's soul, he did come over whenever the cockroaches got to be too much for us to handle and took them away.

Toni's guesthouse is probably one of the cheaper places you could stay in Tongatapu. It is convenient as a medical student as he gives you free lifts to the hospital in the morning. And there is a shuttle to and from town at set times, which he charges $1.15 for. There is a lot you can organize through Toni's guest house. The beaches in Tongatapu must be driven to. Toni has his own beachouse that he will drive you to for $20 for the whole van. (if there is a big group of you going, this works out really cheap as the $20 splits between you, but if only one not so much) If you are here short term I would recommend staying here for its convenience and price.

Room Tip: Go for yellow or blue house

We did this daytrip with Toni who provided us with humorous commentary of the places whilst driving. Toni has a wealth of information regarding most tourist hotspots in Tongatapu. He was also very knowledgeable about the 'Flora & Fauna of the island. Lunch was provided in the comfort of his Beach house from a menu we could select from prior to us starting the tour& was worth the extra money! We were picked up from our hotel @10am & dropped back after 4pm. All in all it was a great day and this should be on your 'To Do List'

Room Tip: If you want a Good Guide to show you all the Touristy spots then Toni is your man!

We didn't stay on the mainland the majority of our stay but we lucky enough to have Toni take us on his famous island tour. We loved it so much we met him again to go to the cultural dinner and cave dancing. He was more than generous allowing us to rest in the blue house lounge for a few hours before taking us to dinner. The house looked immaculate and felt very safe and comfortable. We would definitely stay there if we visit Tonga again. Toni's knowledge of the Kingdom is amazing and his humour kept us entertained throughout. He was incredibly helpful and organised ensuring we met all our airport and ferry appointments. Our lunch at the gorgeous beach house was delicious and very well priced, as was the tour!! Highly recommend ++

My experience was more cultural than touristy, and I spent a little over 2 weeks total at the Green House. I walked through the neighborhood and went to town occasionally, but spent most of my time at the house. My time there gave me a good understanding of the Tongan culture. I made an effort to learn some of the language while I was there, and Mone and Peter were very helpful with that. The Green house is a beautiful piece of property that is well taken care of and always clean. The staff is warm and friendly and I would highly recommend Toni's Guest House for the budget minded and for those that really want a cultural experience in Tonga. Many thanks to all of the staff and family for making my stay one to remember for ever. I miss you all. Lorri

Great stay for us at the Beach House for a couple of days on our way to Ha'apai and then the Garden Room for a couple of days on our way back. Both reasonably close to the airport, clean, cosy and peaceful - what an awesome spot right on the beach. Leni's beautiful presented, delicious food was an unexpected bonus as was Toni's humour! Very helpful, hospitable people and the best value for money of anywhere we stayed in Tonga. Thank you guys.

We didn't stay at the guest house, but had a tour. We were in Tonga on a cruise, and had pre booked the tour. We were picked up from the wharf, and as there were 14 of us we had 2 mini-vans. Monet (not sure of the spelling) was our driver and guide, and he was very informative, and equally entertaining. We did a tour of Tonga, and finished it off with lunch at Toni's beach house. What a fantastic spot! After lunch we went for a swim at the beach directly in front of the beach house. We were returned to the ship in plenty of time. We all had a fantastic day, and I would definitely recommend it!
