“Shame about the rudeness!”
Reviewed March 17, 2011

This could be a good place to stay. Could be.

The guesthouse was fine - although getting a shuttle back into town was a difficult thing to arrange. I only stayed one night and I am glad that I wasn't staying longer as I think I would have been trapped because Toni, the owner did not want to do the shuttle run.

As above, this place could be a good place to stay but it is not. Toni the owner from England has been in Tonga for a long time and so should be more aware of Tongan culture. He is rude to staff and aggressive. He complained a number of times about how lazy his staff were and said that it was an indication of all Tongans - "they are all lazy" was a phrase he used a lot. I was pretty appalled by this and by his behaviour towards his staff. I am not sure why he remains in Tonga if he does not like it very much but he should not be treating customers like this.

Staying at Toni's was amazing and lovely and this was my 4 times . Toni was helpful in many ways advising me to make my staying pleasant. His sense of humour ,makes me laugh every time he talks, however you only know it if you understand the North of England sense of homour. The staff were all very friendly and eager to help everytime you need something. I stayed at the blue house , house were absolutely clean and tidy , same as the room I stayed . They moved all the furnitures everyday for cleaning , everything was spotless. Toni's tour was well explained and undestandable and most of all the cheapest, I could say the best Tourguide in Tonga. Shuttles are cheap as he runs several times to town for only $1.00 each way.
Toni's kava night was awsome , Mone do the kava night , explaning the history of kava and all the ceremony, a special time for you to meet other guest as Toni always has lots of tourist staying , listening to all his funny stories.
Toni have 4 houses with different qualities , all houses are well look after and are safe and secure. All his houses have hot water to make you feel comfortable after a long day .....
thank you Toni and Leni for making my staying pleasant , i will definetly come back some day. Malo 'Aupito

We stayed at the blue house for two weeks and can recommend that. It is kept perfectly clean and rooms are comfordable. Guests may use the kitchen free of charge and there is a nice lounge as well. There were only few travellers staying with us at the blue house so the place was very quiet. The staff is friendly but not everyone speaks English. They take security issues seriously and outside guests are not allowed in the guesthouse. However, be careful if you book with hostelbookers.com, they will still charge you the full price.

Toni's Guest House is in Nuku'alofa on Tongatapu, but located inland rather than close to the retail part of the township. The surrounding roads are in poor condition - like much of Tonga - which hinders your ability to get out and about. But fear not, for Toni arranges a number of transfers between the guest house and the centre of town for only T$1 - a bargain.

We were lucky to stay at a relatively quiet time and had the 'blue house' all to ourselves, which was a treat. The rooms are immaculate, cleaned every day and very appealing. The lounge, bathroom and kitchen (apparently one bathroom for all guests, although I could be wrong) were also in very good condition. The rest of the facilities are pretty basic - you have to pay for towels and extra sheets, for example.

All in all, the accommodation was excellent value for money, and if I were a backpacker (it appeared that most of the guests were) then I would not hesitate to stay again. The biggest downside, however, was the host's demeanour. Toni can be a bit grating and cynical at times, with a few outspoken opinions coming your way whether you care for them or not. The other staff are excellent, well-mannered and very dedicated - but quite often look miserable. We felt quite uneasy at times.

I'd definitely recommend this place to a backpacker looking for a cheap stopover and basic accommodation, but not to someone looking for somewhere 'nice' to stay.

We stayed in the yellow house and would recommend it as a place to stay - clean and with a good lounge and kitchen to make your stay comfortable. It is self catered so make sure you go to the vege market in town and stock up on supplies. There is a cheap roadside BBQ place not too far away on the main road and a corner store to top up on things like bread. Toni's is a bit far out of town (about a 45-60min walk) but he does run $1 shuttles into town everyday and it's quite nice to feel like you are part of the local village rather than in a hotel.
The only reason I may not choose to stay here in the future is Toni himself - he seems to be pessimistic about everything and he treats his family and staff (who are very good at their jobs) not very well (yelling at them and talking down to them) which made me feel uncomfortable. His knowledge of Tongan history is also not that great and it worries me that he does tours of the island and is giving out false info on Tongan history.
Ok, so the final word is. "clean nice place to stay and good value for those who are independent travelers but ignore Toni!"

I stayed here for a few nights, and it was all good and fine. I stayed in the "green house" which has a kitchen so you can cook your own 2 minute noodles and refridgerate your own butter and bread etc. Rooms are cheap and good value for money and although it's a couple of km south of the main town the staff ride in to town several times a day (rough times listed in the reception area, green house) for 1 tongan dollar. Toni's tour is a bit of a hoot too if you like that northern english sense of humour, and he takes you all around the island in a day. I'd stay here again no problem.

Excellent value for money, and very clean. Staff were always friendly and helpful (even attempting to catch a spider in our bathroom at 5am!) and honest. We were in a 6 bed room in the blue house that had an ensuite and fridge. Communal kitchen was great for sticking to a budget and meeting other friendly travellers.
Good shuttle service to town for $1 each way.
Would recommend the kava night with Moni & the island tour.
I am sure I will stay there again!
