We are well traveled kiwis and rarely come across a place where we are made to feel so welcome. The owners Judy and Kim are superb hosts. The only regret was that we only had 2 days and nights there. Because of its locality to the township and being close to the jetties we did not need a rental car. We returned home feeling very relaxed and have put 'The Villa' on our most preferred list. An ideal spot for a 3 -4 day weekend break from New Zealand.

The owners are a lovely couple from New Zealand. The Villa is an intimate little B and B that is located across the road from the waterfront and in walking distance to everything. It is a quaint, comfortable and the hosts are very accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble. They were so helpful with ideas on how to spend our time in Nuku'alofa. Restaurants are within a few minutes walk in the warm tropical evening. Just lovely to stay here and we will definitely be back next year.

We stayed here one night at the end of our holiday before catching our flight back to Sydney.
Rooms are quite small but well appointed with tasteful furnishings and good mattresses/linen.
Each room has its own en suite shower room with sink & toilet. It is very compact but serves the purpose.
The major benefits of the Villa are the lovely patio out front, huge lounge room with sofas, books to read, flatscreen TV and dvds to watch, which would be a real bonus if you are in nuku-alofa for a while as there is not much to do.
Also a very large kitchen.
It has the overall feeling of a home away from home. Also the owners were very friendly and helpful. Judy picked us up from the wharf unannounced as she knew we we be coming in from Fafa island on the boat. It is otherwise only a short walk, but was very kind of her to go out of her way to do this at no charge, etc.
Breakfast was good accompanied by friendly chat from Kim (Judy's husband).
Overall a good place to stay, if not a little expensive at T$175 plus 15% tax. We equated to about AUD $160 at fx current rates.

I chose to stay at The Villa on a friend's recommendation and couldn't have asked for a better place. I arrived in the evening to be warmly greeted by Judy, who showed me around the guest lounge (with widescreen tv and dvd library), kitchen and my room. The room was large with a queen size bed, desk, reading chair, wardrobe, chest of drawers and small but private ensuite. It had air-conditioning but the temperature wasn't unbearably hot so I stuck with the ceiling fan. Everything was clean and the linen fresh, towels replaced daily if you want.

The room price includes breakfast, served by Kim who is very cheerful in the mornings and makes excellent coffee. In addition to the coffee, breakfast includes cereal, toast with a range of spreads, fresh fruit and juice.

I especially liked the wireless internet access available for a small fee. I was able to work comfortably in my room, in the guest lounge or on the verandah looking out over the ocean. I also liked the location - it's on Vuna road which runs along the waterfront, and a 10-15 min walk west takes you into the town centre with great cafes and markets while a 10-15 min walk east takes you to the wharf, more good cafes and a fish market. Kim and Judy were very helpful with advice about places to visit and in arranging a late checkout and airport transfers. Nothing seemed like too much trouble and the place was nice and quiet in the evenings.

I stayed for 7 nights and during that time other guests included consultants as well as young couples on holiday.

The Villa is delightfully casual and slightly run down. It is well positioned. The services were adequate but there is roon for improvement. The rooms were fairly clean and the owners reasonably helpful. We were concerned that it is not possible to contact them at night. This became a problem when we accidentally locked ourselves out of our room. If there was an emergency being unable to contact the owners could be a real problem for people new to the couontry.

We'd heard that Tonga is nowhere near as touristy as Fiji or the Cook Islands so we didn't know quite what to expect. The streets of Nuku'alofa are certainly messier, with more rubbish on the streets etc. than some other Pacific Island cities, but nevertheless we enjoyed our stay at Villa McKenzie. Kim and Judy were very pleasant hosts, easy to talk to, generous with their time, and all of their recommendations were right on the button. They arranged a day trip for us, with Joe's Friendly Island tours, which was very thorough and enjoyable. They told us where the best restaurants were and even gave us some sunscreen, which we'd forgotten to pack.

The room was very comfortable, with its own tiny bathroom, wardrobe and air conditioning. The lounge with cable television and excellent reading material is huge, and we enjoyed sitting after hours on the porch out the front and in the garden out the back.
Although the Villa was more expensive than some of the other accommodation options on Nuku'alofa, at the end of the day, we felt well looked after and that our hosts were reliable, which makes all the difference in a place like Tonga, which is less easy to navigate than some other Pacific holiday destinations.
