I stayed here for 5 nights on a work trip. Overall impression: Some good points but generally average. I had one of the ocean view rooms and the view was fabulous. Gripes: room wasn't always cleaned properly; sometimes used wine glasses were not replaced or cleaned the following day; plumbing issue with a blocked toilet; breakfast service was too slow. Raves: Rooms are lovely, big and spacious; balcony is a lovely size; location is absolute Gold - walking distance to everything and everywhere; restaurant dinner was lovely, food portions were huge and food reasonably priced; they have no business centre but were happy to print out some documents I needed from the front desk; and best thing: complimentary wireless!

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms have a good view but noiser as they overlook the road.

This new hotel is next to the grand old dame the International Dateline Hotel and it was an interesting contrast. Everything was plastic, including the 'chrome' fittings in the bathroom and the 'wooden' doors so I doubt its lasting qualities. Hot water not connected in bathroom basins and 'cold' tap in shower we eventually found out was the hot water. Internet did not work in rooms and was so slow it dropped out when you tried it use it in the foyer. Service was good and helpful, restaurant very mediocre, and worst of all was seeing the hundreds of shark fins drying on the hotel roof - replenished twice whilst we were there. Yuk!

Room Tip: King room has balcony view over the water. All other rooms have no balcony and side view to half dem...

I stayed at the Emerald for a week. Although the hotel was generally fine I don't think it's worth the rates they charge when compared to other accommodation on the island.

The hotel appears to have been recently built or renovated and some of the quality of workmanship is fairly average. The beds were huge but firm. The shower was huge and endless hot water which was good. The TV had limited channels in English and reception was average. The internet was free but slow (I think that's fairly typical on the island though). The staff were helpful and the room was well cleaned each day.

Room Tip: Get a room away from the road to avoid noisy vehicles

I had the pleasure of staying at the Emerald of almost 2 months in March/April 2012. It is probably the newest accommodation in Nukualofa and is currently in the process of extension which will double its capacity. The hotel is completely Chinese down to its hard beds and even the TV and A/C remotes are all in chinese, so very difficult to operate. TV and internet reception needs to be improved. Rooms are great size, very airey and bright. Room servicing is excellent and staff only too happy to please. The front rooms are actually too bright from the morning sun during the morning and from the street lights at night. Dark out curtains would help. Road noise (traffic and boom boxes) from Vuna Rd and from restaurant customers can be disturbing. The restaurant is a disappointment both for meals and cleanliness. The restaurant often remains uncleaned up from the night before and is usually very musty and flys abound. Windows do not appear to have ever been cleaned and restaurant stock needs to be stored elsewhere. The entire restaurant including restrooms needs to be cleaned up and better presented otherwise it will detract from the hotel. But otherwise a comfortable and great place to stay. Great outlook to the water front and handy to town.

Room Tip: If you want a quiet sleep, don't choose the front rooms, but choose the front rooms for the outl...

The main issues in Tonga are Security, Location, Friendly Service and Security.
Having experience of almost every guest residence on the main island i can vouch for the Emerald and its staff. Security is paramount. The manager is amazing in his dedication to this project, and having been schooled and trained in England is a pillar of assistance. Lovely air-con rooms, giant king bed, with lots of space, marble floors, and huge floor to ceiling windows to watch the sunrise over the sea. When we had a Tsunami warning, where better to be in this flat country than in a big solid hotel. the attached chinese restaurant is handy, but the location is amazing for almost every good restaurant is easily walk-able. The waterfront 8mins to the right, & Fiesta 6mins. Friends cafe & Escape 5 mins into town. The warf is outside the door for boats to the local islands, fish market and bus station. The town is 2 minutes the other way with the only shops on the island, the local Avis car rental and Medical clinic (Village Mission Clinic).Noise at night is a way of life in Tonga and The Emerald is OK with the doors shut and air-con on. If you are coming to Tonga, beware of being too far out of town, as there is effectively no public transport for foreigners, and taxis often hard to get. A few minutes more is too far in the heat of the day, the rain or the dark of night, when most of the younger population are loitering on the streets. Tonga is not a safe place for travellers at night as detailed in the security section of 'The Lonely Planet', (p 184, 6th edition) so The Emerald is a natural choice. We stayed 2 weeks and loved it, and as a result loved Tonga.

Room Tip: Ask 'Mr Bond' the manager. Rooms nearer the 'town' are quieter.

Lots of small improvements could make a big difference to this hotel. It has the potential to be a good hotel.
The mosquitoes will eat you alive. Pack lots of Aeroguard. They need to do something about this. The airconditioner and TV remotes are labelled in Chinese so there's lots of random button pressing to keep you busy. Print some instructions in English. The curtains dont have blockout so you'll be up with the roosters. The bathroom sink plumbing consists of a piece of flexible piping that drops into a hole. This will flood with normal flow, and when it does the cockroaches will appear.
The food from the Restaurant is very average and they don't even serve Shark Fin Soup which is very dissapointing at it can be a tasty meal when Kahuna burgers are not readily available. The Wifi is free so this is a bonus.

This hotel stands out in Tonga not only because it is probably the newest, but because of the level of service the Management and staff provide.
The hotel is very environmentally responsible with Solar water systems installed, and rain water from tanks is used in the rooms which is great for drinking whereas some other hotels have town water which you are advised not to drink.
They also have flat screen TVs in each room with Foxtel and Movie channels available.
I have been here for three weeks now for work and my stay has been a pleasure.

Room Tip: the North facing rooms have a fantastic view and balcony.
