“Good house front but poor room”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2014 via mobile

I like the house front & Restaurant is very good but expensive. Rooms are very poorly maintained. Be aware of brownish hot water. Though I had a confirmed booking I had to wait until 3pm to check Inn.

Clean room, bay view, good service but don't even think of using the internet....at US$2/min! A friend didn't realize an connected to check mail --- disconnected when she learned and had a $65 bill! Nice location, meals with uneven service but food OK.

After reading TripAdvisor reviews and on the recommendation of our travel agent we chose to stay in a sea view east room at this hotel. It is located in the city right next to the dive shop, craft centre, the stunning Breakwater cafe and close to the central market. Our room was very modern, clean and well appointed with a comfortable bed, crisp white sheets, a fridge, safe, indoor and outdoor seating. We had to ask for an extra towel as only 2 thin towels were provided and this arrived in less than a minute.
It also took a bit of convincing to arrange a late check out, however they did accommodate us in the end which meant we were able snorkel the nearby Bonegi wrecks and return for a shower before flying out. This was a great option for our overnight stay and I would recommend this place provided you go for a sea view east room.

Room Tip: Go for the sea view east rooms.

Pay extra to be in the East wing (lwhich doesn't have wifi, only ethernet..). Expensive hotel for what you get (cleaning and service isn't the best..). Go to little snacks around for breakfast, cheaper and better than the buffet proposed by the hotel.

I stayed at the Mendana Hotel recently during a work visit to Honiara. The hotel is centrally located in Honiara and overlooks the water. My room was in the Garden Wing and was basic. The room was airy and the air conditioning worked. Of the two beds, the double bed was very firm wih no give at all and the single bed was slightly better. The bathroom was dated and in need of renovation. The room was clean. The hotel staff were very friendly and the helpful. There are two restaurants and both provide a good choice within their menus. A functional place to stay without being special.

Make sure you book the rooms in the "new" wing. The first room that I got had a severe rodent problem. The staff did not seemed surprised when I requested a new room, which of course, costs more. My new rodent free room in the "new" is ok. This is not a great hotel, however. I mean, it is fine, but I certainly wouldn't actually choose to stay here. The breakfast is pretty bad and overpriced, but the rest of the food is passable. The staff are not rude, and seem ok. at least they give you your own personal bottle of insecticide for each room. it is a nice touch.

I have stayed at the Solomon Kitano Mendano Hotel twice, but am writing a review for the first time. Its rates are just at the maximum for many business travelers' allowances, (and these are by no means budget rates), so it does a good business and is sometimes booked full. Yet both times I have been there I had a standard room that is harsh concrete walls, worn furniture, bed as hard as the floor and the company of roaches and mice. In short, what I would expect from a low budget motel. The so called garden room looked out onto the parking lot and drive, so curtains had to be closed all the time, and an overhead light was broken. A broken pipe leaking water onto the walkway outside the room added to the unpleasant ambience. The internet system is expensive, as elsewhere in the Pacific, but worse was that having bought 24 hours, and disconnecting after two, I woke and logged back in and found it had been running all night despite me disconnecting. Other guests said they had the same experience.
On the other hand, some of my business colleagues decided to pay for a higher grade room, even though above their allowance, so out of their pocket. They reported a much more pleasant sea view, in an renovated rooms. I also want to record that the staff in all sections were always genuinely friendly and helpful to the limit of what they could do. And the Japanese restaurant is deservedly popular.

Room Tip: Only the highest price, sea side rooms are habitable....but then for the price they charge for those...
