“Good hotel right in the action of downtown Honiara”
Reviewed June 12, 2012

Having stayed throughout the Pacific over the past 20 years, this hotel lived up to the standards and expectations. Although the wing was slightly run down and the rooms outdated (as they were renovating throughout the property throughtout), the bed was extremely comfortable, the air conditioning worked (most important thing in the Solomon Islands during their summer!) and the bathroom was comfortable. The hotel is conveniently located in the centre of Honiara. Across the road is a museum, which has free entry Monday to Friday. Two spots down is the Yacht Club, and the Central Markets are about a 15 minute walk away. The Heritage Park Hotel is about 3 houses or so up. If you are Australian, the Consultate is directly around the corner. from this hotel. The Wednesday night Buffet is a must. I think people tend to forget that Honiara is still in its true infancy for tourism compared to the likes of Vanuatu, Fiji and New Caledonia. Its tough to compete against these other countries when they have the major hotel chains now dominating or entering their markets. Plus they are commercialised tourist destinations, whereas Solomons Islands isn't.

Room Tip: The hotel is going through two stages of redevelopment. Go for the sea view rooms.

Quite the enigma, this place. The website shows the rooms well, and they are pretty good, although we had an executive suite, so it was as good as the rooms can get here, and the cheaper rooms looked pretty average.

Yes it is central in Honiara, but that is a curse as well as a blessing. It is situated about 10 meters from a major storm water drain, the spews forth a substantial proportion of the dross from the town. One our first morning a stroll along the beach revealed several items of discarded underwear, at least 100 plastic bottles, and a dogs head. I understand that the hotel cant control what comes out the drain, but there appears to be no effort whatsoever to clean up the beach in front of the complex. It was absolutely horrible

The food at the complex is expensive and average at best. The adopt a most unusual approach to the bill. At this establishment, there is no option for two couples to simply split the cost of the bill across two rooms, equally. They insist on going through each individual item on the account, and apportioning every item to one room or another. Absolutely infuriating.

Then there is the matter of the internet. The cost of a wireless connection works out at about 20 dollars Australian, per hour.

I wanted to like this place, but just could not face returning

Not much changes here the rooms are very tatty apart from the new exec rooms as with all hotels in Honiara over priced as there is very little competition . Location is great the views are great I just wish they would renovate the rooms as there is so much potential for this hotel.

Great location very close to everything. The renovated rooms are fabulous - see the photos on the website. Avoid the unrenovated rooms. The renovation teams re working flat stick so more and more rooms meeting the grade.

Restaurant very average though Wednesday Buffet Night is great (need to book in advance) and the Japanese restaurant is always popular.

The staff are friendly and always helpful.

If you need/want to visit Honiara this hotel would be one of the best.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms directly over the kitchen.

The Mendana is one of the best in Honiara. It is well positioned close to govt and commercial offices. The executive room was clean, a good size with a bath and separate shower. The best part was the view across the bay.

The Japanese restaurant is very good while the main dining room is ordinary. The worst feature is the buffet breakfast which lacks variety, real coffee and quality. Truly disappointing.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view room.

We arrived at the hotel with high expectations, after having seen the full page add in the SolAir in flight mag, are were somewhat disappointed to find that the room we were in looked nothing like the photo's.

Turns out they are renovating and we were in an unrenovated room.

Anyway, facilities were comfortable enough, although a random lack of water made using the toilet a bit of a lucky dip. We ended up using the bathroom in the restaurant & pool area, to stop the smells.

I would rate this place a 2 star facility only. It's not flash but the rooms were clean, the bed was comfortable and they staff were always happy to assist.

The food in the restaurant was terrible. Most things were over cooked, the 'seafood plate'tasted like it was frozen seafood imported from Australia (the stuff you get from your local take-away place) and generally bland and tasteless. Theres a couple of Chinese restraints down the road in town tha do much better (and much cheaper) food.

As othershave said here, there's a lot of construction going on next door and that's a pain. Every mon-fri expect to be woken up to hammering, drilling, etc at about 7:30. We were up at this time, so didn't effect us to much but I imagine this would be annoying if you want a sleep in.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the newly renovated rooms.

They have completed the renos in room 501- 509
Get one of these for about Sol 1600 / night
Clean, nicely furnished, lovely bathroom, one can soak in the tub while watching the waves roll in.
Breakfast buffet is way better than Heritage, and the Wednesday night buffet dinner is great. One needs to reserve as it quickly fills up with the local ex pat community.
