Am a repeat visitor over several years - largely due to location and growing familiarity with the advantages and disadvantages of the hotel. It is aged but with incremental renovations taking place so a bit hit and miss on the state of the rooms - hit = recently renovated rooms (Seaview rooms currently been redressed and my usual choice because of the Bumblebee Internet connection actually works here), miss = garden view and tired, dimly lit rooms. The rooms are spacious though, TVs work as does the aircon and bathroom are cleaned well but they are tired looking and only basic toiletries provided. The Executive rooms are the way to go, well appointed, fabulous lookout over Ironbottom sound and a great tub! The staff are a big plus - friendly and helpful and remember you after the first visit. The hotel-airport shuffle (SBD60 or approx US$10) is great and convienient. Hotel location is really handy to central town services and the lobby plus seaview alfresco bar area is a favourite meeting place. You cannot buy Bumblee Internet cards at the hotel shop though - purchase at telecom 5 mins stroll away (closes at 4.30pm), not cheap with SBD50 for 2 hour cards which you have to use all in one go or the better bargain of a 7 day or 250Mb capacity for SB$250. Food? Buffet on Wednesday nights great, chips come with everything though and a lunchtime fave, I've changed from the Lime Lounge to Bamboo Bar (near King Solomon Hotel). Solid na!

Room Tip: If you don't want to stretch budget to excutive, new wing room, ask for a seaview room.

Pleasant stay in Honiara - friendly staff and reasonable service. However, maintenance has not kept everything up to standards. If they would invest a bit more it could return to its former glory. The Japanese restaurant was excellent and on reflection I should have gone there more often.
The rooms in the old wing are not up to standards - nevertheless the bed and lights were good, as well as a new modern air conditioner, which is quite essential.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the wing that was refurbished.

Stayed at the Mendana for a wk. The only good thing about it is its location. The hotel -(rates and food)is overpriced. The old wing needs to be scrubbed and given a new coat of paint. Couldn't sleep because of the all-night parties at the club next door. Drapery etc need to be changed. Look like they've been there for decades. Dont expect to get anything fast with room service...they'll tell you its coming.....even 2 hrs later

Room Tip: Avoid rooms in the old wing. They're in desperate need of refurbishment. Old curtains, carpet, b...

there's not much to choose from in Honiara. The aid and RAMSI contractors have inflated hotel prices far beyond their quality for many years. I wish this hotel had spent some of their windfall on maintenance. We had an old, poorly maintained room, on the west side. Just about everything was falling apart. The swimming pool is Ok and had clean water. Ask for the new rooms...the old one's are very bad. The Japanese restaurant is excellent...especially for lunch. Excellent position on the waterfront in the middle of town next door to the yacht club, which has reasonable meals and drinks.

Room Tip: ask for the newly renovated north facing wing.

Sad to see the condition of this hotel now. First stayed here 12 years ago and, just prior to "The troubles" this was a top quality hotel. Very old room and furniture, the only lighting was either at the entrance or against the balcony window! If you want/have to work then you have to sit there! Which is OK because there is no work space to put a laptop anyway! No lights near the bed either so no reading at night! A huge bar in the entrance to the room! Absolute waste of space! No bar fittings or beverages! Confused as to why such a big bar would be in a hotel room!
Internet access was zero for the first two days, despite asking for and being promised, a room with 24 hour excellent internet access. This hotel does not have its own broadband it uses a communal Wi Fi setup, which is so poor, the only way i could get access in my room, was to place my computer against the balcony window and access the internet through the hotel next door.
The staff did try for me, they took me to three other rooms in all areas of the hotel, each as bad or worse as the room i was in! In one room they suggested that if I stand on the stairs between the two landings, that would be the best spot for access. I tried and it was no good either, but could not imagine standing there 5-6 hours a day to use the internet!
Bathroom like the rest of the place is old and rundown. There is "water saver" showerh nozzle, which sprays the water 180 degrees from the outlet, meaning that the door and the wall get a great wash but anyone standing under the nozzle remains virtually dry! Takes three times as long as usual to shower and you still feel under done!
Linen is clean, towels are quite news and washed every day. The biggest cockroach I have seen on the second night there. Lots of very small ones every other day, but the big one only once!
Staff are very helpful, restaurant is excellent! Really good! They even understand how to cook bacon and how to make coffee, quite unusual in Pacific Islands.
I doubt I will stay here next time. I will likely stay at the King Solomon, which used to be a dive but now looks very good. It is marvellous what keen management can do. With the poor old Mendana, I have seen it before. The other Kitano hotel in Samoa, went the same way further and further down until the Tanoa group finally bought and brought it into the 21st century. Perhaps we can prevail upon the Tanoa group to make an offer here????

Although we had paid for airport transferrs,we were the last three people standing at Henerson Airport when the mini bus arrived to pick us up. Finally arriving at the Mendana hotel we were suprised to see how refreshing the foyer was. The staff were friendly and our room suited the price we had paid for. The television was old but the picture was clear for the five channels we recieved.Being a former guest twenty years ago,it was no longer the beer swilling exciting bar it once was. Now rather conservative, the bar had shrunk being one part Western style resturant and the other side a Japanese resturant .The pool area was clean with beautiful views streching across Iron Bottom Sound and Savo Island. One good thing about the hotel is that it is so convenient. Next door is the Yacht club, beer is $4 cheaper and the meals are also cheap and filling. Also next door you can hire a small 4x4 for $190si dollars from 9 til 3, these days that's long enough. One thing to remember, no locals have a credit card so cash is needed 99% of the time. And since the confict in 2006 there has been huge chages. My advice..head for the provinces and enjoy this disturbed piece of paradise.

Four star hotel with pool, restaurant, garden, and absolute beachfront location. It's not a beach you would want to swim at (narrow and dirty as anywhere in Honiara), but the view is pretty. Rooms are pleasant and staff are helpful and friendly. The bed was rather hard.

Hotels in this part of the Pacific are quite expensive - check out the exchange rate before booking. Also this hotel charged the whole amount, not just a deposit, as soon as I booked. Honiara attractions can be seen in a day so most travellers move on to swim/dive locations elsewhere.
