“This is really very nice place to stay”
Reviewed March 14, 2011

This place is very nice. You can ask why. 1. The location is perfect to get easy wonderful places such as Avaiki cave, Limu Pools and Matapa Chasm (all of three are very nice for snorkeling). The cottages are very clean and have everything you need. The hosts are very welcome and friendly. They are always ready to give your advice and help. We've spent there a week. It's was very good. Even when it was rainy we went to swim.

Facilities and location are the best on the island - the locals often told us this too! The cottages have everything you need, the gardens, lookout, pool area and location provide an idyllic place for a relaxing break. The owners have thought of everything. They are more than happy to organise any excursions on your behalf before and when you arrive and advise on the best places to eat, where to snorkel and what the local gossip is. Became our home for a week - very sad to leave.

The secret is out. One of only three places in the world where you can swim WITH humpback whales, Niue is a land of surprises. And the Namukulu must surely be the best place to stay there. With only one flight in and out a week, if you are the only ones to book your place of accommodation, it's more than likely you'll have it to yourself! Canadians Brian and Teressa picked us up at the airport and Teressa came to the supermarket while we bought supplies. They are both VERY helpful and she was able to point out places of interest (like the few restaurants) to us as we drove back. The Namukulu is high on a cliff near Limu Pools with an elevated view of the sea - great for breezes and seclusion. With only 3 individual villas, it's small and perfectly formed! We had a one bedroom (separate lounge) with a full sized kitchen and large bathroom. The rooms have ceiling fans and louvered windows. It was HOT and humid in October so we needed them. The cool tile floors and shaded porch overlooking the pool and the distant sea complete the picture. Then began the most relaxing and interesting holiday I’ve ever had. I took my watch off and never put it back on all week! But staying with the Namukulu for a minute; you will enjoy kitchen basics and a breakfast starter kit; fresh tropical fruit; a gorgeous clean swimming pool; privacy; a sea lookout to die for (we didn’t see whales, but many people have) solar heated shower; outdoor table setting; a comfy bedroom with room for bags and to hang clothes; free internet and… Brian’s amazing massage service! They have converted the gym (WHO would workout in that heat?!) into a lovely massage therapy room and both my husband and I had full body massages that were excellent. Among the best we have had anywhere in the world and very good value. Laundry is expensive so do your own and hang it out and yes, it’s buggy but your villa is fully screened. Be aware there are 3 dogs who are friendly and (mostly) well behaved! Other extra little touches that really mattered included a bouquet of tropical flowers (it was our anniversary), fresh papaya, and Brian even wrestled open a coconut for me! Thanks you two. The only negative about the Namukulu is actually a positive – they don’t take children! It’s great if you’re a couple, but we want to go back and bring our 5 year-old, so boo hoo!
As for Niue, I can’t rave enough. BUT, you need to do your homework. It’s not a place to go for a resort holiday with shopping and everything laid out on a plate. I would recommend that you cook for yourself a few times. Simple dishes of rice, salad and locally caught fish (Mahi-Mahi, Wahoo etc) are perfect and you can eat outside on your deck. There are only a few restaurants but they alternate the nights they are open so there’s something open most evenings. Lunch at the Crazy Uga was simple, but great. You’ll need a rental car because it’s much bigger than Rarotonga and you’ll want to explore - in Niue you have to be adventurous and be happy with activities that centre around nature and discovery! The island is flat, rugged, rocky and peppered with the most fascinating rain forest, walks, caves, sea pools and snorkeling or diving. Every walk ends in a different outcome. Many sea tracks have rubbish bins, seating and brand new capsule flush toilets (with liquid soap and toilet paper!) and they have a freshwater rinse shower outside! Perfect for after that sea swim. We swam in 30 foot deep clearwater pools, snorkeled in pools where fresh and seawater combined, clambered through mighty caves that opened out to the sea, even swam in pools INSIDE caves, while bats chattered above us! I walked across a shallow reef following a black and white venomous sea snake as he fossicked around the rocks – totally ignoring me! And, even though it was late in the season, we were able to swim WITH whales! It fulfilled a lifelong dream for me and I could rave on for days, but just know that Ian and Annie at Niue Dive run the most professional outfit I’ve experienced and due to their skill, four of us (that’s all!) had the most unique and wonderous time snorkeling with whales who must have been only 4 metres away! We were two minutes off shore and it was an easy and safe experience. Thoroughly recommended. As is the Namukulu Cottages and Spa.

Nothing is too much trouble for the new owners, Brian and Teressa. After picking us up from the airport, they let us shop for groceries and showed us some of the local swimming and snorkelling sites. Car hire and mountain bikes had been efficiently arranged by Brian and Teressa. The grounds, pool and cottages are immaculately kept. Our daughter fell in love with the two boxer dogs. One of Niue's best beaches (Hio) is a 5 minute walk down hill from the cottages. Try the local fish - delivered to your door at ridiculously cheap prices in a cute "Mr Whippy" ice truck. With a bike you can get to all the caves, chasms and snorkelling sites but get a car for at least 2 days for the other side of the island. You can walk to Limu Pools (but low tide is the best). The lookout on site is perfect for sunset G+T's (see photo).
Thanks again Brian and Teressa!

The Namukulu Motel provides new, clean and quiet cottage accommodation on the north-western side of Niue Island. The cottages are provided with separate bathroom, cooking facilities, free wifi, and bbq by the pool. The cottages are only a 5 minute drive from Alofi, and are placed ideally for a short walk or cycle to the most spectacular scenic spots on the island (Limu pools and Tuvala Arch). The hosts are extremely friendly and helpful, willing to drive guests to shops, and hire good bicycles to guests at less than typical rental rates. Cycling around Nieu is wonderful, as the roads are empty and flat, and there is plenty of paupau and coconut along the road for snacks! Bring some cash, as visa credit card facilities are rare, and mastercard not existant.

Namukulu Motel is probably the second most up-market accommodation on the Island of Niue. The individual self-contained cabins are clean, spacious and modern [ about 5 years old] and well maintained. There is a small swimming pool which is probably well patronised in the warmer months.

The motel is about 7 kms north of the main township of Alofi. It is quiet and high enough to receive a refreshing breeze. Everything is quiet on Niue there being a population of abour 1200 people of which approximately 500 are school chlldren, on an island four times the size of Rarotonga !

A relaxing place with virtually no crime and a nice slow pace. When shopping at the local supermarket leave the keys in your car in case they need to move it while you are shopping !

Top marks to Robin and Joe the present owners - the motel changes hands in November so hopefully the new owners will maintain the high standards.
Niue is an undiscovered gem - and we would like to keep it that way so don't all rush to go there. Swimming with the whales was simply magnificent, and the diving was varied and excellent (run by the wonderful Annie and Ian at Niue Dive).
