Scenic Matavai Resort Niue
Ranked #1 of 3 Hotels in Alofi
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 11, 2011

Matavai is like many of the independent resort-style properties scattered throughout the Pacific. Clean, comfortable, adequate if somewhat unspectacular in terms of facilities, but compensated for with stunning locations.

I stayed in room 23 and had no major complaints. I could imagine the thin walls could be a problem with noisy neighbours, so I was thankful for quiet ones. I had to crane for an ocean glimpse, but I knew it wasn't far away as the crashing waves soothed me to sleep each night.

The resort is usually full or near-full and you can expect guests of all types from retirees to young families. Parents with toddlers should be alert (like anywhere) as the resort is in a high position and there are spots where little kids could have a fall.

Be careful not to parade around inside your room in "birthday" attire unless you want to arouse the other guests as it is possible to see clearly inside other rooms lit from inside at night. The rooms have a/c, but if you can go without, do. Power on Niue is expensive and I never turned my a/c on at all and was completely comfortable. There's a stocked minibar at familiar prices and a flatscreen satellite TV with a few major channels only.

Staff are efficient and cheerful and my housekeeping crew were particularly on-the-ball. (Thank you ladies) Restaurant is okay, but mix it up at other places around town for some variation. The deck bar is a top spot for an evening drink and has magnificent view. Dolphins and whales (in season) frequently appear just off the shore.

Internet cost me NZ$50 for the week, but Wi-fi is difficult to get in the rooms, so I had to cart my laptop to and from the lounge/bar/dining room for decent signal. They have a good antenna, but it needs better placement.

Renovations and extensions are being planned, so work will soon begin on an additional 20 rooms. Even though this is not a brand new resort, cleanliness was not an issue and indeed Niue as a whole is a very tidy place compared to many of the other islands.

Room Tip: Best value with a pre-paid package

This was my first visit to Matavai and Niue; the resort was kept neat and tidy, albeit being overdue for some TLC in places. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was basic but suited our needs, it also had air con and a pleasant view. If you like a firm bed and enjoy the sound of the sea, this place is fine. As advertised, the view from the dining area is excellent, we saw dolphins cruising past - would have loved to see the whales however it was a bit early for them. There are some menu options for vegetarians, prices are on the high side for food, but within the range of most places on the island - one must remember that a lot of food needs to be imported and this makes it more expensive. Enjoy!

Stayed at the Matavai for one week. Staff are very helpful and friendly. We were put in one room at first that had a musty/mouldy smell. The bed even felt damp. After we complained, we were upgraded and given free drinks at the bar. The next room was great - they mentioned our first room had not been used for a long time. The humid weather must make it hard to keep shut up rooms completely dry etc.

all in all, the resort is fine, but a little dated and tired. the staff really make the place. the view is amazing! we did walk the track from the resort from the reef. it is hidden and a bit dodgy - make sure it is low tide, also. there is a little, deep and beautiful hidden hole under a cave just by there - perfect for some private swimming!

Niue is the most amazing place, and we will go again and again. do look online for package deals, they do some that include breakfast and accomodation at the matavai.

Stayed for a week, nice grounds and excellent views of the ocean and coastline. The resort is pretty decent but meals are expensive and menu is fairly boring.
Rooms are a good size well appointed and clean. If you like the sound of thunderous surf crashing over the reef while you nod off at night, you are in for a treat! I would not recommend the resort to families with young children.
Pleasant stay.

We have stayed at Matavai several times over the last few years, and booked again later 2011.
The hotel is consistently good. The rooms are good size, always clean and have views to die for.
The food is always good and interesting, particularly the local food. Make the effort to try other places on the island, they all need support.
Staff are amazing, can sometimes be shy to begin with, but when they get to know you are wonderful.
Everyone on the island is genuinely helpful, the Alofi car hire, police, customs, honey factory( make sure you buy some). Everyone waves when you are driving, cycling or walking.
The walks on the island are great, relatively easy and great scenery.
Snorkelling in the rock pools and chasm is warm and great.
Getting in and out of Niue is so easy, charming airport, nice change from mega airports with queues and beauracracy.
Our main reason for choosing Nuie for one of our holidays each year is Niue Dive. Ian and Annie run a fantastic operation, small dive groups, great dive sites, safe and fun.
Can't recommend Matavai, Niue Dive and everything else about Niue highly enough.

This is our fourth trip to the Matavai Resort and we love the place and the people more every time. The rooms are cleaned thoroughly every day and the staff are very helpful, nothing is too much trouble. This is the place to stay with kids as there are two pools to choose from, and you really need to cool off in them at least 4 times a day after exploring the island in the tropical heat. Some areas of the resort are looking a little tired but it it is due for a massive revamp within the next year with brand new rooms and an upgrade to the existing ones. Niue and the Matavai are not the place to come if you want long sandy beaches, exotic cuisine and shopping. Its an adventure playground for the divers, fisherpeople, explorers and nature lovers among us, who enjoy the slower pace and simpler way of life. Sitting on the deck of the Matavai with a cold drink in my hand and watching Humpback Whales cruise past while the impossibly blue water crashes over the reef beats any flash hotel with impersonal staff in my book. The restaurant serves farily basic food, great if you like chips with everything, but you have to make allowances when the supply ship only comes in once a month and food is quite expensive. The local fish is always great and pawpaw with lime was always on my breakfast menu.

Its a bit overpriced and be sure that you DO NOT make any telephone calls. I was told it was $1.20 a minute only to find out that they added their own charges on top luckily Vivian the manager sorted this out for me and I ended paying a reasonable amount. Just be sure to check your bills.

Really you get a standard room, what you pay per night is not really worth it the fridge we had was rusting - I have travelled many countries and although I can say Matavai views and hotel itself was nice its really not worth what you pay even with Niue being expensive....There was fijian girl in the restaurant and she was TOP NOTCH and the only one who really made our experience awesome. She was so friendly and didnt hesistate to answer any questions we had.

The sad thing about the whole experience was that some politicians were arriving on the day we left and you should have seen the efforts they went to to make the place look amazing - fresh flowers, new pot plants outside our rooms I just think that all guests should have privelege to that kind of effort with what we pay per night. This is coming from someone who has done a lot of hostels in her time travelling so im not fussy but this was one of the most expensive places I stayed and did not think was worth the money.

We have agreed as a family that next time we will be staying at Namukulu cottages, such a shame because we are coming next time for 2-3 weeks and Matavai has lost our business. It is a nice hotel, beautiful beautiful views and we even saw some whales. The rooms are also clean and theres good food at restaurant. But its not worth what you pay. The milk they give you at continental breakfast is powerdered milk, one morning I asked the waitress if she could check the milk as I thought it had gone off because it had lumps in it, too which she replied "no its not off its just not been mixed in properly"...my brothers had said the milk tasted weird only to find out they were right it was powerdered milk.

Beds are good, you get a great sleep!!! But you'll get that at a couple of guest houses up the road and pay less. I dont know what to say except nice hotel definitely not 4 star as another writer said more like 2-3.........And everything they offer like Jetskis well it never happened we were told "wait for so and so" that even happened when we asked for lights for a night swim "you'll have to wait till 11pm when the night porter comes" surely someone else who works there knows how to turn on a switch?? Argh dunno whale watching and sunsets AMAZING, the pools were also very nice....it is a nice resort just the service needs to be stepped up to that of what they were ready to give the politicians arriving that week....
