Matavai is like many of the independent resort-style properties scattered throughout the Pacific. Clean, comfortable, adequate if somewhat unspectacular in terms of facilities, but compensated for with stunning locations.
I stayed in room 23 and had no major complaints. I could imagine the thin walls could be a problem with noisy neighbours, so I was thankful for quiet ones. I had to crane for an ocean glimpse, but I knew it wasn't far away as the crashing waves soothed me to sleep each night.
The resort is usually full or near-full and you can expect guests of all types from retirees to young families. Parents with toddlers should be alert (like anywhere) as the resort is in a high position and there are spots where little kids could have a fall.
Be careful not to parade around inside your room in "birthday" attire unless you want to arouse the other guests as it is possible to see clearly inside other rooms lit from inside at night. The rooms have a/c, but if you can go without, do. Power on Niue is expensive and I never turned my a/c on at all and was completely comfortable. There's a stocked minibar at familiar prices and a flatscreen satellite TV with a few major channels only.
Staff are efficient and cheerful and my housekeeping crew were particularly on-the-ball. (Thank you ladies) Restaurant is okay, but mix it up at other places around town for some variation. The deck bar is a top spot for an evening drink and has magnificent view. Dolphins and whales (in season) frequently appear just off the shore.
Internet cost me NZ$50 for the week, but Wi-fi is difficult to get in the rooms, so I had to cart my laptop to and from the lounge/bar/dining room for decent signal. They have a good antenna, but it needs better placement.
Renovations and extensions are being planned, so work will soon begin on an additional 20 rooms. Even though this is not a brand new resort, cleanliness was not an issue and indeed Niue as a whole is a very tidy place compared to many of the other islands.
