“A must do in Niue”
Reviewed November 19, 2012

I cannot say enough about how fantastic and entertaining the Commodore's Orientation Tour of Niue is! It's an absolute must do when visiting the beautiful island of Niue.

Currently there's only one flight a week to Niue from Auckland, arriving Friday afternoon. The tour operates Saturday mornings for 4 hours. Keith and Sue are excellent hosts and show you all the best spots to revisit during your week long stay (or two weeks if you're lucky).

They're a mine of extremely interesting information having lived there for 8 years now. Keith took pictures along the way of the group and the following morning, a DVD arrived at our accommodation for us with photos of all the places we visited and included pictures of us and the group. What a fantastic souvenir!

Sue has compiled a précis of all the spots to visit in an orderly list that's very easy to follow and was invaluable the week that followed when we were looking at what to do. This was given to us in a pack with a DVD of photos that Keith has in a presentation on an iPad in the van.

Another plus amongst the many, was getting to know our fellow tour members! Niue is a small place and because of the weekly flight, you get to meet them during the week at the snorkelling spots, restaurants and resort. It made for a fun social time and was most definitely a highlight.

Thank you Muesli, what a great way to start our day here in our small corner of the South Pacific. As I have mentioned before in other responses to supportive reviews, it is important to get the Niuean perspective and knowledge from the "people of the land" who offer reef exploration, vanilla plantation tours, bush garden visits and forest walks. As palagis, our "outsider's" view is then balanced with the culture, history and heritage of Niue. You did that during your visit as well as return to the beautiful snorkeling places. We try to provide value for money both in time and "add ons" so your comments are appreciated there too. When one goes on holiday, meeting other people can add to the overall experience. The small group tours seem to develop a camaraderie amongst the visitors that does extend beyond the morning tour. Your other reviews of your activities during your holiday here on Niue, will add further information for Trip Advisor readers to make decisions on , should they chose Niue as a holiday destination. Keep adding to TA's wealth of traveller information. Monuina e fenoga !

“Fabulous - got to do it”
Reviewed November 16, 2012 via mobile

One of the best things we did was this tour - it sets you up for all the things you need to know like when the best times are for things & when everything is open on the island. You get to meet a few other travellers early on too & that's nice as you will definitely bump into them during your stay as Niue is very small! We went in Keith's van & his wife drove the other - comfortable vans. We has morning tea @ matapa chasm carpark. Action packed tour with lots of sites visited. Be prepared to do a bit of wandering around & don't forget to ply yourself with sunscreen! Thanks Keith - we really enjoyed ourselves & also having a chat later in the week at the Sails Bar. We appreciated your welcome & we had a lovely time on Niue :)

Thank you Anna, for your response on Trip Advisor. I find that more and more travelers are using this website as part of their background research before they even book. Your comment about meeting other people on our tours is a pertinent one, as our visitors find they often strike up friendships over the week and dine out together. It certainly can be a "spin off" for many people who are here in "holiday mode". As far as "action packed" goes, we certainly visit caves, chasm, cliff tops and snorkeling spots, all in four hours. This gives you a "heads up" to maximize your holiday time here. As a seasoned traveler and a major contributor to Trip Advisor, we appreciate, even more, your comments on our tour. Monuina e fenoga.

“Well worth it - book early!!”
Reviewed November 16, 2012

I'm pleased we booked for this tour before we left for Niue - it ensured that we were able to get on the first available tour when we arrived so we could get a good grasp of the island before we took off on our own adventures for the rest of the week! Keith really made us feel welcome and part of his little island family. Thoroughly recommended :)

Thank you Lisa for your helpful review. I appreciated your advanced booking, as it was possible to contact you before you arrive. It is then like going to the airport to meet a friend . You certainly seemed to have fitted many activities into your week here. We hope you will return one day and experience Niue in the winter months.
Best wishes to you both. Monuina e fenoga !

“Time very well spent”
Reviewed November 9, 2012

This was a great way to start our holiday - both Keith and our Niuean driver were full of information about the places we visited and life on the island. We found out all about how Niue's prison got its only prisoner, and on a more positive note we also got to see one of the village show days, drink mango juice and watch the kids perform. The information we got on the day and in the information pack was great for planning the rest of the week, especially the tide guides for swimming at the various spots. I'm not always a fan of guided tours but I got a lot out of this one.

Thank you SuzanneD, for your supportive comments. A review from such an august traveler as you, is even more appreciated as you have a wide experience for comparison. Niuean village show days are always a worthwhile inclusion, and that morning it was the National show day as part of the 38th Anniversary of Independence. As many of our visitors to Niue come to experience the warm tropical waters, snorkeling is a major activity. As you noted, there are optimal tide states and sea conditions for comfort and safety, as well as the unusual thermal layer water temperature mix. A "heads up" on such conditions makes a difference to one's experience. Trip Advisor provides a wide range of reviews from first time reviewers to experienced travelers . Your succinct review provides a useful balance. Kia monuina !

“Orientation tour with Commodore Keith”
Reviewed November 3, 2012

I would highly recommend this tour as it gives you an opporunity to see the highlights of Niue and then know where to go back to visit - having Keith's local knowledge makes this tour really interesting and a must if you want to find out the best places to visit and where the best tracks and sights are on the Island

You also receive a DVD on the area and information pack at the end of the tour which has heaps of information

Thanks Keith we had an awesome tour and loved Niue and hoped to go back in the near future and thanks for the yummy mangoes and paw paw!

Thanks Clive H for taking the time to write your supportive review. Always enjoy meeting "new" people each week on our tour. Local knowledge does help, especially the water safety aspect. The other Niuean tour guides you went out with, introduce you to their culture and provide an important balance to your knowledge of things Niuean. As for the paw paw, that grows like a weed here so that accounts for my success with the production of this delicious fruit. Green fingers - I think not, but glad you enjoyed it anyway. As both of you have travelled widely, now that you have written your first review for TA, keep the traveling public informed of the new places you discover. Hope to meet you again in the future. Kia monuina !
