We found this day excursion very expensive for what it offered. The best part was the buffet lunch which offered some new local culinary delights. It was accompanied by a local punch and an enjoyable French red. However the glass-bottom boat ride to see the corals and fish was disappointing: the coral was mainly dead and there were very few colourful fish. The trip to the outer reef where we saw turtles and large fish was more worthwhile.

We saw two of the famed striped snakes.

There were plenty of comfortable seats and shade if one just wanted to sit and enjoy the tranquility. You could also walk around the islet and climb to the top of the lighthouse.

Touristy day trips like this can seem like you are on a production line, but here the mostly young hosts are so enthusiastic and natural that it's very enjoyable. They are also very talented, speaking several languages between them, playing instruments, singing, dancing etc. The island is small but beautiful, there is good snorkelling close to shore, and on the side trip to the reef you will see lots of big fish and probably turtles and sharks. The buffet lunch was extremely good, and alll the dishes were fully labelled as to their ingredients and whether they were vegetarian or gluten-free (just get your second helpings before the seagulls start snacking on the left-overs!)

We were however a little bemused to see, in a protected marine park where you can't even return to the mainland with a handful of sand, baguettes being thrown out into the water to attract fish!

The only criticism we have is that the toilets on the island are a bit run-down, and at least one did not have a seat or toilet paper.

There is a discount for seniors which will bring the price down around 15% to about $A150 which, considering the value of a full buffet lunch in New Caledonia, and everything else that is included, is pretty good value. Note that, if you're not booking from your hotel, the booking office for the company is not at the wharf, but in Anse Vata near Le Roof restaurant.

We booked this excursion on our cruise ship because we had no intention of spending a wet day in Noumea.

The trip out was a pleasant 40 mins, and as soon as we got on board we saw a TripAdviser 2013 award! Island itself is in a marine reserve and has a 50m+ lighthouse you can climb for great views.

Several glass bottom reef tours give everyone a chance to see fish if they choose not to snorkel.

One extended reef trip on the transfer boat at 11am is a must if you want to see larger fish and sharks.

Buffet lunch was excellent as was the lunchtime entertainment. Shop has the usual tourist trinkets and gifts as well as snorkel hire.

Sea snakes frequent the island but our guides assured us that while venomous you would basically have to shove a finger down there throats to get bitten. It was great to see one swimming with and underwater camera.

Finally a big thumbs up to the staff and guides who were really friendly and informative.

A pleasant day spent at Amadee Island. Ferry ride over then there are a number of activities including glass bottom boat and snorkelling. Lunch was also included and the buffet was OK but give the wine a miss. It was pretty rough but the local punch was OK.
