“The perfect holiday destination - this is living!”

It's great to just lie on the nice clean, green grass and swim in between reading and sleeping.
The 2 pontoons are just a short swim out. Wear your snorkel all the time as there are some beautiful coloured corals and huge starfish on the sand around the pontoon. Locals at the pontoon were very friendly and courteous. Visibility can be poor when the tide is changing, though the water is still beautiful for swimming, clay seems to flow out from the shore at the curve of the bay but does not affect the main snorkelling areas. This snorkelling is really nice with colourful coral, a myriad of different fish, eels, sea urchins, rays etc but no soft corals. There is plenty of snorkelling to keep you busy but the best is along the deep edges. Coral colours are magnificent.
Make sure you grab an ice cream or sorbet from the old fashioned ice cream vendor on the beach. At just 200 Francs, you get good old fashioned service with a smile and a huge range of flavours for such a small barrow. That was our treat every day. In between swimming and snorkelling, we just snoozed and read on our woven mats (Noumea style) and then wandered across for Happy Hour at the bars along the Esplanade.
The council staff are to be commended on taking pride in this popular waterfront area, keeping it clean and green and a pleasure to park your towel anywhere. The fact they have also provided so many comfortable wooden sun loungers and seats is great and adds to the general very pleasant ambiance and appeal of a leisurely time at the beach.

“Simply beautiful”
Reviewed January 24, 2014

This beach was simply beautiful. It's also supervised with lifeguards which not many of the other beaches are.

It can get a little crowded but it's not overbearing.

“Pretty beach, good for swimming”
Reviewed January 9, 2014

After checking out Anse Vata beach we decided to return to Baie des Citrons as it was much more sheltered from the prevailing wind. Spent a couple of days here just sunning and reading, and it was very pleasant.

Couldn't find any reasonably priced, takeaway food here which was slightly annoying. But found a couple of good sandwich shops around in Anse Vata (far end, past the Hilton).

The local bus is the ideal mode of transport for exploring here. It is cheap, regular, and reliable.

“Bay of Lemons, but sweet as honey”
Reviewed December 13, 2013

This is an island near Australia and with its close proximity is an ideal overseas location for a short break. In the heart of the South Pacific, New Caledonia proper is a long and narrow cigar-shaped island, surrounded by a number of other beautiful islands. From Tontouta International Airport, it's approximately 45 minutes to Noumea, the capital. As soon as we landed, it felt like we were in another country with French being the main language spoken, but we were in what could only be described as a ‘tropical France’. There is a mixture of French culture and food, combined with other different ethnic influences. The diversity of cultures is evident, including architecture. Although there is a large range of accommodation options, we stayed out of the main town, choosing an apartment at Baie des Citrons (Lemon Bay), overlooking both the bay and the beach at Anse Vata, giving us the best of everything – tranquil, clear waters for swimming in the bay and more action for water sports at Anse Vata. The range of activities depends on your interests, whether you prefer leisure, sport or relaxing on the beach. You can choose to stay on land (horse riding, hiking, golf) or do water activities (canoeing, canyoning, snorkelling, diving), the possibilities are endless and the cost depends on your activity. There is also the option to visit the outer areas such as the Loyalty Islands or Isle of Pines.
