It's great to just lie on the nice clean, green grass and swim in between reading and sleeping.
The 2 pontoons are just a short swim out. Wear your snorkel all the time as there are some beautiful coloured corals and huge starfish on the sand around the pontoon. Locals at the pontoon were very friendly and courteous. Visibility can be poor when the tide is changing, though the water is still beautiful for swimming, clay seems to flow out from the shore at the curve of the bay but does not affect the main snorkelling areas. This snorkelling is really nice with colourful coral, a myriad of different fish, eels, sea urchins, rays etc but no soft corals. There is plenty of snorkelling to keep you busy but the best is along the deep edges. Coral colours are magnificent.
Make sure you grab an ice cream or sorbet from the old fashioned ice cream vendor on the beach. At just 200 Francs, you get good old fashioned service with a smile and a huge range of flavours for such a small barrow. That was our treat every day. In between swimming and snorkelling, we just snoozed and read on our woven mats (Noumea style) and then wandered across for Happy Hour at the bars along the Esplanade.
The council staff are to be commended on taking pride in this popular waterfront area, keeping it clean and green and a pleasure to park your towel anywhere. The fact they have also provided so many comfortable wooden sun loungers and seats is great and adds to the general very pleasant ambiance and appeal of a leisurely time at the beach.
