“Overall... a very nice place to stay”
Reviewed October 1, 2012

We stayed in a 1 bedroom suite on 2 separate occasions before and after our visit to the Isle of Pines in September. On both occasions we were allocated a suite on the highest (7th floor) as requested.

Overall, this is a very good resort, clean, and in a perfect beachfront position at Anse Vata Beach.

Hotel staff are generally pleasant, and most speak some English. If you know some French, give it a go, as you will usually receive better and friendlier service.

The inclusive breakfast is OK, with a wide range of hot and cold food. The coffee available is out of a machine and not very nice though. For most of our stay we self catered, using the limited kitchen (there were pots and a pan , but only 1 cooking utensil - a wooden spoon!). We ate once in the hotel restaurant on one evening and the meal was lovely.

There is a bus stop just across the road from the resort. A bus ride is 210XPF per person, apparently regardless of distance travelled. It will take you to the centre of the city in about 15 minutes. Many cafes and restaurants are walking distance from the resort.

A few negatives we experienced were:
1. Hotel did not organise transfer from airport as pre-arranged. I had to manage this myself on arrival to Noumea. Then the hotel tried to add the transfer cost onto my bill!
2. Hotel can be noisy at night (nightclub downstairs plus Meridien hotel next door generates a lot of noise). One night the noise was still going from the nightclub at 3am.
3. An earlier check-in was declined. We arrived at the hotel at 1pm, and were told to come back at 2pm. The receptionist suggested we go and have a drink in the bar....and wait out the 1 hour.
4. Bathroom showers drain very slowly, so your showers need to be quick.
5. English channels on TV worked only occasionally.

Our overall experience was positive, and would stay at this resort again given its location.

Room Tip: Higher floors receive less night club noise.

We spent 6 nights at the Royal Tera in July and were impressed with the quality and facilities of this hotel. It is absolute beach-front, with nice swimming and a pool/beach side bar. The room was lovely, with a good sized bedroom and separate lounge area. There was a full kitchen, but we only used it to open wine bottles - as the hotel restaurant is superb and there were many local eateries nearby. There is a fabulous spa area in the hotel with a large indoor pool. An entry fee is payable, but is worth the experience of trying a huge pool with a variety of different spa jets. We will definitely return to this hotel.

Room tip - it is worth upgrading to a seaview suite. Our view was stunning. The 'garden' view rooms seemed to be basically above the carpark.

For those with kids, half of the hotel suites are 2-bedroom (although there didn't seem to be too many kids activities other than the beach).

Our only negative experience was arriving with a number of other guests in the airport transfer bus, to find only one person on duty at the reception desk (who didn't seem to speak any English). We thought that the hotel would have been aware that a number of parties were arriving on a flight from Auckland that evening and should have staffed the reception desk accordingly. One couple just went straight to the bar and waited for the queue to die down though - not a bad idea!

Room Tip: Seaview room. Definitely.

First, the good bits. The room (2 bedroom) was large, light, very clean, and nicely furnished. The pool area is nice, though needs more sun loungers. The breakfast was a mixed bag - some days great and some really not.

The noise issue, however, is a major drawback and I wouldn't stay there again. The first night we were kept awake until 1am by music from a function in one of the restaurants on the lower ground level (which, kind of bizarrely, have nothing to do with the hotel). Annoying, but they were unable to move me to a new room when I raised the issue the next day and shrugged and apologised but said, 'yes, it can be noisy here' basically. All was ok for the next couple of nights but the Sat night was insanely noisy with a wedding in one of the reception rooms. Noisy enough that my kids who sleep like logs could not sleep through it. At 1am I called recption to find out when it would stop and the answer was 4AM! 4!! She said the room had been rented out for that long and there was nothing she could do. When I said 'but this is a hotel, not a nightclub, people pay to sleep here' she said 'well they paid more to get married here'. (Seriously I couldn't make this stuff up). I felt very sorry for the receptionist as there was a hotel full of angry people. The word on the ground the next morning was that she'd stopped answering the phone so people had gone downstairs and caused something of a scene. Shame on the manager or whoever thought it reasonable to sell that function room until 4am in full knowledge that a lot of people would have a mostly sleepless night. Shame on him/her also for leaving a night receptionist to bear the brunt!

The lack of sleep for the whole family, including young kids, meant that our last day was a bust and by the time we left on the Mon we were really keen to leave.

It's a pity because this could be a wonderful hotel, but the noise issue compounded other smaller issues (mostly service related) and just brought the whole thing down.

We absolutely loved the Royal Tera - we are a family of 4 & we booked a one bedroom apt & when we arrived they upgraded us to a 2 bedroom so we had lots of room! The hotel was awesome - all very clean & recently refurbished! The hotel gym was bigger & better than any other hotel gym ive ever stayed at, the staff were friendly & the buffet breakfast was amazing! all in all we were thrilled with our stay here & the accommodation really made it!

We have stayed at this hotel twice for about 5 weeks in total whilst in Noumea on business. Wow - what a lovely setting! The hotel is spacious and modern with a well equipped gym. The restaurant has open air areas for al fresco dining and breakfast overlooking the beach. Georges the waiter is an absolute star and looked after us very well! The food in the evening was excellent and the choice for breakfast was ample. There's a very pleasant bar area with comfortable chairs for relaxing in the evening. Our rooms were like mini apartments with a kitchen/living area and a separate bedroom with en-suite bathroom with a large walk-in shower. The rooms were spotless and well appointed. The hotel has a pool for those that don't like sand on their feet, with sunloungers and pool bar. Walking distance of the main L'Anse Vata bay area with many shops and restaurants.

This is the old "Club Med" refurbished and quite nicely too. The room space is excellent with a lounge, kitchenette and a separate bedroom - king sized bed which we like!
I booked a "hill view" room which was a disappointment as the view only overlooked the car park and you could see neither the hill nor the ocean. Oh well, we were mostly only in the room at night anyway.
The restaurant(s) are a bit disappointing and we ate somewhere else after the firts night or two.The breakfast was particularly bad! The chef's idea of scrambled egg is a long way from mine. But plenty of fruit and nice coffee.
Our shower drain was blocked and the maintenance man was there within the hour after I called reception, excellent service.
The TV received loads of French speaking stations but the four Australian channels were unwatchable as the siignal kept disappearing every few minutes, so we gave up entirely.
Didn't get to use the spa as they wouldn't let me in with board shorts and I had nothing else! Plus it was very expensive.

Room Tip: Go for the "Beach side" and hopefully you won't be disappointed. Although noise from t...

Just returned from a 7 night stay at the Royal Tera and had a wonderful time. The one bedroom apartment was plenty big enough with good storage for everything to be tidied away neatly. The room was cleaned daily and replenished with stock in the kitchen and bathroom. Whilst staying there, some special events were happening in the restaurants and bar, so there was the added bonus of fireworks displays and spectacular drumming. There was also a sailing regatta in Anse Vata bay. I used the local bus service and taxis to get around and found both to be clean and cheap. Spent many a happy hour in the local wine shops. The hotel staff were especially pleasant and helpful even with my bumbling high-school french learned many decades ago.
