Ile aux Canards island

The idea of heading out to an island close to the mainland is very appealing, but once there things are a bit disappointing. Umbrellas on the beach are charged for, the snorkelling is okay but not incredible and the food was a let down -- pretty much matches the full Noumea experience.

Nice cafe in the centre of the island. Scuba trail is good. It is a pity you have to pay for the lounge chairs but then that is part of the up keep I guess. Take shoes as the coral is hard on the feet. Colleen water taxi's best price 1000 pff retun

The island is a very short boat ride from Anse Vata beach and is becoming very popular. I suggest that you are there during high tide as this provides more options.
The visibility was better than Amedee and a lot more fish of bigger size and more variety, close to the shore. There is a good self guiding snorkel tour.
Plenty of amenities are now on this Island, but costs extra. Just take your snorkel, mask, flippers and a picnic and you will have an enjoyable day.
One advantage is that you can return to the mainland whenever you are ready via the water taxi.

While not quite up to Ile des Pins standard, the beach here is pretty nice and you can hire a couple of loungers and an umbrella (about $25) and buy beers from the bar (about $7) and enjoy the snorkeling trail and view back over Noumea for as long as you like. It's about $15 to get out there on the boat, but it's an easy paddle in a kayak, so if your hotel does free kayaks and it's calm, save your $15 and get a couple of beers on the beach.

The snorkeling is actually pretty good with some pretty big fish cruising around while we were there. The beach itself is a bit coraly so take reef shoes or at least thongs.

You can have lunch out here too if you like and the menu looked ok if a little overpriced.

Overall, worth the trip, especially if you like snorkeling.

We came here as a large group and this island was a highlight! The snorkelling was fabulous ! There was also a bar and food and deck chairs. We all had a blast and only 5 minutes from the mainland.
