“Sad centre of town, only go to change buses or visit the small museum”
Reviewed September 18, 2013

Unfortunately like many city centres this little square is no longer the attractive little place it used to be but a 'hang out' to be avoided. To be avoided at night and Sundays especially. The buses go thru there on each route so sometimes necessary to be there for that reason. The small museum nearby is well worth a visit in an historic old building. The shops around the square are a mixture of French chic and tatty cheap goods. The atmosphere may be better when a cruise ship is in port but not really worth the effort to make a special visit. It's time the authorities made a better effort to tidy it up.

“Musee de la Ville opposite Place des Cocotiers”
Reviewed August 4, 2013

Am placing this review under the Place des Cocotiers because Trip Advisor doesnt have this Museum mentioned separately - and it is a MUST to go to. No. 7 on the Hop on Hop Off bus on the northern side of the Place des Cocotiers, this museum is in the old Town Hall and has great displays with info written in both French and English (plus you are provided with complimentary English audio sets) tracing the history of New Caledonia and including excellent WW1 and WW2 displays and commentaries. Highly recommend you go to this Musee together with the Tjibaou Cultural Centre at the commencement of your holiday in order to become familiar with the history and culture of the country and its peoples. Allow 1 to 2 hours.

“Sit and watch the world go by.”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

This city square is an important part of the city of Noumea and, for tourists, a good place just to sit, eat, have a drink, ice cream or justy rest up and see the local people. Handy to the city shopping and museums.

“Historical”
Reviewed June 19, 2013

Like the rest of Noumea this "Place" is tired. It does have a history, but fails to impress. Many out of work "hoodies" sit here all day.
Worth a visit, but don't get excited.
