“Interesting to have a look around”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

We arrived about 9am so there were plenty of stalls and people around. It was cool to have a wander around the different parts of the market and see some of the local produce, but our intention was basically just to look and had no real intention of purchasing. There looked to be some nice pastry stalls, but we had just had breakfast. The craft style stalls were a bit dissapointing, one with handmade hanging bassinettes that looked quality, everything else looked like it would last 5 mins. In general, i'm glad we went and had a look and experienced it, but it certainly wasn't amazing. It was easy enough to get to and also easy to get a park which helps! We stayed about 40 min in total.

“bon marche”
Reviewed July 25, 2012

On our first visit to the market we arrived too late so many stalls were closed. On the second visit we were much earlier and bought a few things for the folks back home like sarongs and scarves. The best item was a bag sold by Monsieur zippy which was made from a continuous length of zipper. We had not seen anything like it before and clearly it was not made in China. We found out later that the black pearls were probably not black pearls. Oh well, there are rip-offs all over the world. The tomatoes were nice but much of the other fruit and vegetables were in a sorry state. Overall, the market is pretty small but then again, only 245000 people live in the whole of NC.

“One of the most expensive places on earth”
Reviewed July 19, 2012

New Caledonia is a paradise in the middle of the Pacific, where prices are ourageously high. The local market is a colourful place where the sights and the smells are a pleasure to the senses, until, that is, you look at the prices: from lettuce at 4 euros each to nectarines at 6 euros the kilo you have plenty of choice to get ripped off.

Everything else in New Caledonia is highly priced and service is non-existant. One final word: avoid DLR (Discount Location Rental): Filthy owner, filthy cars, doubtful safety, for 500 euros per fortnight for a group A car........

“Excellent small market”
Reviewed July 14, 2012

Excellent small market that we visited after watching the Bastille Day parade
Had a good range of local produce and craft and the adjacent fish market is a great way to see the local fish species that are caught and sold
Good little coffee bar in the middle of the facility as well if you are looking for a local coffee
Close walk to town and right on the waterfront

“Great market”
Reviewed May 30, 2012

This was a great little market to go to and get fruit and vegetables. Our favourite was the bakery stall with croissants and French Danishes. This worked out to be a very cheap morning tea. Monday - Wednesday there are a lot of stalls not open unless there is a cruise boat in.
