Don’t waste your time coming here.
It’s only open for a few hours in the morning, there’s virtually nothing to see or buy and I’m surprised it even features on this list.
Once, we arrived at 11.30am by which time it was already mostly packed up and closed. Not sure why we bothered coming again – probably just curiosity.
It’s mainly a fruit market for the locals but with a food counter and a few stalls selling cheap trinkets. A lot of the space is boarded up or vacant.
The fruit looked decent enough and reasonably priced, but we didn’t come here to buy fruit and even if we did, without a car, there was no way for us to carry it back to our hotel. So from that point of view it’s useless.
The trinket stalls sell the usual range of costume jewellery, key rings, fridge magnets and the like. All we managed to buy was a leather key ring and a small glass of “fresh” orange juice from the food counter in the middle – although I suspect wasn’t 100% fresh.
The location at the port area though is easy to reach. If coming from Anse Vata, the no 1 bus drops you outside the Museum of New Caledonia (a much better place to see) from where it’s a short walk across the busy road. Just don’t be fooled by the “pedestrian crossings” – most motorists simply ignore them.
