I usually try to leave positive reviews; if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. But in this case I have to. I don’t think I’ve ever left a restaurant angry before.
The meal started well. The entrees were huge and tasty. My wife enjoyed her Octopus salad and my prawns were good. Expensive but good.
This was our last night in New Caledonia and we wanted a special meal to end our holiday. I really wanted to try the local crab. We had seen them in the local markets, trussed and ready for the pot. So we chose Sampaka because they had them on the menu.
I ordered the stuffed crab, but when it came to table there was no sign of a crab on my plate, just a small ramekin with toasted crumbs on top and a few scoops of sweet potato. I didn’t say anything initially because I assumed this was how they served it. It sure didn’t look like the photos on this site.
I took one mouthful and wanted to spit it out. It was obviously frozen crab meat reheated. It tasted awful and had that watery, soggy texture that frozen crab has. This was a $50aud dish.
I called the waiter back and asked why? She admitted it wasn’t fresh and tried telling me that it was not the right season for crab. But what really got my upset was their refusal to take it back.
I ended up paying for that very expensive dish even though it was simple inedible.
So be warned: this restaurant has some nice qualities, but ask questions first.
