It is not a place for people to live longer, but only one or a few weeks. But as a small hotel in the center of government and a large portion of commercial activities in Kiribati, it is pretty good to. In addition, the restaurant Bloody Mary in connection making it easy to take their meals.
Want to point out that the dishes I ate here was not the best nor the cheapest during my stay at Tarawa.
Nippon Causeway is only 50 meters from the motel and making it can be a bit noisy on early mornings and evenings, this noise is mixed up with dancing and bingo gambling that also constitutes a strain if you are tired and want to sleep.

Mary's Motel is located in Tarawa, in the heart of Tarawa - where you will find many shops, market, Internet cafes and the main sports ground. Although this is where I find Kiribati State House and President's Office, the Australian High Commission

Room Tip: Room number 1 is very good in old wing. Near to Mary´s restaurant for breakfast.

The rooms were clean hot water and staff friendly.Washing was free and they provided a basic breakfast as part of the package.
Lower your expectations and you will not be too disapointed, what was really bad was the early awakening from the roosters behind the motel from about 3.00 am and the loud music that started about the same time.

Room Tip: stay in the new building

This was my 3rd visit to Tarawa within 3 yrs & recently spent 3 wks in Tarawa as a tourist from 14/02/13 to 07/03/13, during my 1st visit in 2010 I was able to stay at Mary's Motel for one week, during my 2nd visit in 2011 & this recent visit I wasn't able to stay due to my dates & the Motel being fully booked out. During my recent stay I called in at Mary's Motel to say hello to the staff, the staff made me very welcome polite & professional. Interacted with some of the other guests & purchased a drink & a meal, good service & the food was good with a large portion, meal prices not to expensive. Management also made me very welcome & on one occassion was able to get a lift back to my accommodation. Management was able to confirm when the next Kiribati Cultural Dance would happen & I was able to attend on Wednesday 06/03/13 during the evening & throughly enjoyed watching the young group dance, i'd like to once again thank all the staff at Mary's Motel in making me so welcome & hope to return sometime in the future & hopefully stay next time depending on my dates & availability. Good luck to all the staff & good health.

Just spent 4 nights at Mary's Motel in Bairiki Tarawa. It's one of the best in Tarawa. Located very close to the shops in Bairiki, Betio causeway and Bairiki wharf - useful things are nearby. Several consultants were staying there and walking to their offices. The staff is very friendly and always willing to help. There is a restaurant which serves food all day long and often provides company for meals. The room had AC and an en suite bathroom.

Mary's Motel is not a motel in the real sense, that is not a place for people on long drives to stop for the night. You cannot go on long drives in Tarawa for one thing and there is not enough parking space anyway. However as a small hotel at the center of government and much of commercial activity in Kiribati, it does quite well. There is an old set of rooms that are cheaper and not very nice and a new block that are up to a reasonable standard. You won't be coddled and the rooms may not be up to the standards of international tourism but are large, comfortable, well equipped with refrigerator, water boiler for coffee or tea, decent wardrobe and lots of really hot (maybe too hot) water. But don't hope for a TV (at least one that is connected to anything). The new rooms are air conditioned, mostly with very quiet split type units that work well. There is little road noise (though sometimes parties can be noisy). WiFi is present but as with most Internet on Tarawa is variable from quite good to absolutely dreadful -- with dreadful in the majority. It is a pay as you go Internet connection and it is easy to use up your half hour ($2) trying to read and send a couple of emails. Better to walk for 10 minutes to TSKL (Telecom) and use their very good Internet Cafe which is not only cheaper but a lot faster. The restaurant is basic but is about the only place in Tarawa to get real expresso or even good brewed coffee. The food is fine though vegetables in Tarawa are pretty scarce and expensive so mostly rice, noodles and fish are the mainstays. Bairiki government offices are in walking distance and the Betio facilities are a short public bus ride across the causeway ($0.80). There may be nicer rooms in some of the B&B places but Mary's is probably the best option as it has a restaurant in the facility and is ideally located.

Room Tip: Stay away from the few upstairs rooms that have a window type air conditioner. The A/C units are noi...

Due positive comments found elsewhere on the net, I decided to spent my first day at Mary's Motal in Tarawa. I had to change the room twice due to various reasons. Not value for money but friendly staff. A basic motel but lot to improve. Food moderate.

Mary's Motel may have been one of the best in Tarawa in 2010 or even 2011 but they are living off that reputation now and not delivering a quality accomodation.
The rooms are filthy, with cockroaches and mice visible and a general lack of maintenance occurring. Internet is an extra to be paid for (unlike some other Tarawa accomodation) and prices at the restaurant are excessive (by Tarawa standards).
Unless you are a keen to meet the many organisations that seem to flow through this motel I wouldn't recommend it to anyone now. Not when there are some great other choices in Tarawa now, with more services for less or no cost. Mary's get your act together!
