We were visiting our son in Salina over the weekend and he suggested we try the Renaissance Cafe in Assaria. It is a short drive from Salina. It is in an old school house which makes the setting interesting. You feel pretty isolated and private. It was a wonderful experience. We had reservations, which they recommend. I think you could probably just show up but it is so easy to reserve a table I would do it. The menu is not extensive but the choices are not the usual fare-at least where I eat. Three of us had the rib eye steak-rubbed in spices with seasoned butter. It was absolutely wonderful-tender and very flavorful. The salad was also very good as was the service. We will try it again when we are back in town.

This is a restaurant in an "old" school house and well worth the stop to see all that is inside. We had lunch and it was "fine" but the dinner menu looks like that is the time to eat there. Hope they will always be there!

Elegant food for a small town. Setting is unusual.

Established help/server/hostess was not helpful. The server in training was great! I wish she was our server- we were celebrating our recent out of state wedding with back home local family but if I want Vodka i will order it in a glass w/ ice from the bar, not from the kitchen on a plate with pasta swimming in it...the pasta in vodka sauce was very off putting. We had the waitress ask the chef "way too much vodka?" and of course he disagreed. We had her take it away. They did remove it from our bill but we did not request that in any way, we were not looking for afree entree. The herb cheese appetizer was okay to good (cream cheese & spices/herbs similar to what i make at home) with crostini( yep, toast...also similar to what i make at home) Sliced sort of fancy but still toast. Requested more toast crusts from the training server (since i could not eat the vodka noodles) and she said "be right back" Instead the not helpful established server returned and said "You have to order a whole other order" That would have been no problem; the prices are okay (as they should be for what they offer) but the way she said it to us was just Terrible! no pesonality/no rapport whatsoever just deadpan and then to make it worse she said "But i can bring you as much bread as you want" umm. no thanks. and even more worse the server in training whispers to us "I am so sorry" as she walked by to another table so i am guessing she was informed of the no extra toast rule. I felt bad for her and for us--it was supposed to be a Fun meal, her tip certainly reflected that. (we are usually over tippers all of us having been servers in our past employments, but not for this gal...not this night.) The place was dead quiet~no atmosphere at all. We have eaten there twice now, will never go again after one of the most important events of our lives was one of the worst meals we have ever had! Keep driving, don't stop..Salina is very close by and they have amazing steak houses! The steak at Renaissance was the best thing served that nite but we can get that nearer to our house for a better price and much better service. Definitely not worth the drive!

A wonderful combination of atmosphere ( an old school house with the basketball court still intact), super service (Kelly is a real pro), an interesting menu with many preperations out of the ordinary, and excellent tasting food. Oh yes, the portions are large and the presentation excellent. Its worth driving for. Highly recommend.
