“Cruise stop in Rabaul”
Reviewed January 30, 2010

On a recent cruise our second port of call was Rabaul PNG. What an Amazing place. As you approach Simpson Bay a still active volcano greats you with a continious spew of Ash, smoke, and small rocks. Depending on wind direction the Ash and smoke will cover you and stick to any sun cream you have put on. To some people this is viewed as disgusting, to me and many other fasinating and part of the town. A local tour is worth while looking at the remains of destoyed Japenese fighter planes and submarine base. But more importantly is seeing how people still live in the town, with the fear of another major eruction. The street, paths are covered by ash, but out of the Ash you meet a community of beautiful people very freindly and polite. Children walk up to you just wanting to hold your hand, and the local adults are worth having a beer with to talk about the local conditions and there way of life.

I know this review is short and might not do the town justice. But if you have a chance visit Rabaul be thankful for what you have.
