Reviewed April 1, 2011

on my way back home, i checked in at the airways hotel for one night last 31 march 2011 at around 1630hrs and was provided a bacchus room with the driveway / car park for a view.....

my assigned bacchus room 2023 provisions included the following:
1. an old "integrity" television set with, thankfully, a still functioning remote control
2. only ten television cable channels to choose from
3. no toiletries except for the toilet paper, towels and two (2) small bars of soap
4. an empty fridge except for two (2) 500 ml of bottled water and a 250 ml tetra-pack of milk
5. an appropriate writing pad near the phone but curiously, without a pen
6. thumping footsteps from the room above that served as my automatic alarm clock whenever the occupant sporadically felt like executing his walk-about shuffle
7. and a limited room service menu that entails an additional charge of 7.50 kina for every room service delivery

for my late lunch, i ordered their "airways burger" (40 kina) which was not only bland and unimaginative but also came with a charred bun instead of an "oven fresh bun" as indicated in the menu..... needless to say, i enjoyed the cold can of coke (5.44 kina) more than their signature burger.....

for my dinner, i asked for the "thai aromated tiger prawns" (79 kina) and the "tropical fruit breeze shake" (15 kina)..... i got eight, big prawns which was truly a generous serving but i reckon the prawns were grilled directly on the gas burner since i could "taste" a hint of cooking gas in them.....

for my last meal the following day, i requested for the "salad nicoise" (29 kina), "thai prawn salad" (49 kina) and the "pacific sprinter shake" (15 kina)..... the meal was not a disappointment although i was expecting "clear" noodles for the "thai glass noddles" in the salad as stated in the menu.....

and then sadly that morning of 01 april 2011, someone even implemented the devious practice of long ago which involves shutting down the power to the room for a few seconds to remotely turn off the air conditioning unit in order for the establishment to save on their electric bills to the utter discomfort of their "unknowing" clients.....

please note that i have checked in at the crowne plaza, also without a reservation, just a month ago and i was able to enjoy a sea-view room including a whole range of television cable channels with a flat screen tv set, complete room amenities plus the availability of better and a wide variety of food choices all for a lesser price.....

in all fairness, the airways hotel has likewise provided good service (staff were very courteous), security (deadbolt on the door is always a plus) and a comfortable bed which could be considered as its saving grace for the amount of 900 kina that their paying guests are shelling out for a single night.....

but regretfully, my personal airways hotel episode has, undeniably, been like an unfortunate motel experience with a staggering five-star hotel price tag.....

Room Tip: decline if bacchus room 2023 is offered

Dear Tumble Weed,

Thankyou for taking the time to review our property and you complementary words on the quality of our staff, our efficient security and the quality of our beds.

You have however raised several points which made your stay less than expected, a disspapointment to you and us both. For the inconveniences such as the guest above your room and our oversight in not providing a pen to your room. You mentioned the toiletries in the room. Our standard is to provide in all Bacchus Wing rooms 2 rolls of toilet tissue, facial tissues, 2 bars of soap, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion and complimentary fresh fruit platter. If any of these items were missing, please accept our apologies.

In regard to your comments on the 3 room service meals that were ordered from what you described as a "limited room service menu" (which does actually offer 45 items as well as daily specials) I am somewhat at a loss. Our written records show that when we made our "courtesy call" as a follow up to 2 of your meals, the burger was described as "quite good" and your dinner was described by yourself as "a great meal" with no mention of a gas flavour. As all regular hotel guests would appreciate throughout the world, a room service fee is standard at almost all hotels, and we do not believe that a fee of US$2.50 is unacceptable.

Your comment in regard to the turning off of our power and implementing generator power is completely erroneous. As all "knowing" residents know, Port Moresby is currently experiencing load shedding of power on multiple occasions throughout the day. Your conspiracy theory of some old practice of us doing this on purpose to save of power would actually cost us money as the cost of generator power is far greater than mains power as well as damaging to our electrical appliances.

Sir, we genuinely do attempt to ensure that all of our guests do enjoy their stay with us and believe that we provide value for the very high standards that we have a reputaion for providing. On this instance we obviously failed you. Hopefully in the future you do allow us the opoprtunity to redeem ourselves and as such, please do not hesitate to contact me at the hotel should you decide to do so and I will do my best to ensure that you receive a truly memorable stay at Airways.

There is not much choice when it comes to safe and clean hotels in Moresby.
The Airways whilst expensive is a nice place to stay. Modern, Fresh and friendly. The rooms are large and well decorated
The food is good and the service prompt. The view from the top over the airport is pretty good too.
The location is out of Moresby but the inconvenience of the travel is outweighed by staying at Airways rather than hotels in the middle of town eg Crowne.
Only 5 minutes by car from the airport.
Definately my choice of hotel in Moresby.

Hotel is surprisingly stylish. Make sure you don't get a room in the old wing- it is away from the main hotel nad, though it has been renovated, has an open walkway access and possibly mosquito prone.
The other floors in the hotel have a variety of 'club lounges' which is a bit annoying when you can't get access.

Dear gra1Sydney,
Thankyou for your recent feedback. In regard to the mosquito observation, we do fog the property regularly to combat this possibility and have our gardeners take the necesary precautions to minimise breeding grounds for mosquitos. We are also in the process of glassing in the Bacchus Wing of our hotel to match with our newer wings and this will not only give the wing a new modern look but alleviate concerns such as those that you expressed.
In regard to the club lounges, we have 4 in total, 3 which are exclusive to the Dakota Wing guests and the Fountain Club lounge which all hotel guests can access 24 hours a day and enjoy butler service with complimentary refreshments.
Once again, thankyou for your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you to Airways again.

This was my first experience in PNG and after hearing all of the security concerns, I had some trepidation before my stay. But after being assured by our business hosts that Airways was the only place they could recommend. After spending over a week in Port Moresby we could see why the choices were limited.

First off, the security of the complex is a BIG selling point in a place where law & order is sketchy at best and the crime rates are ridiculously high. There are security all around the perimeter of the gated complex and there is a guy walking with a shotgun around the facility 24 hours a day. Normally that would be considered a negative, but not in Port Moresby.

I stayed in the oldest section of the hotel close to the Bacchus restaurant. The rooms were adequately sized and furnished with the exception of an old tube television and its remote with no battery cover. There was maid service in the morning and turndown service in the evening. there was always a steady supply of bottled water in the fridge which it is highly recommended be used for brushing your teeth.

The lobby and new section of the hotel would be terrific by standards most anywhere in the world. Although I admit that is not best to study the art on the woodwork which is culturally fitting for the Highlands but often crude & disturbing to Westerners.

The elevator ride from the lobby level up to the poolside restaurant on the 7th floor is an event unto itself. You are wisked up past gorgeous lounge areas until you emerge abover the lower buildings of spectacular scenery toward the Variata National Park. The view from the 7th floor level can be breathtaking on clear days. There are even views to Bootless Bay and the Coral sea beyond. The views are even more commanding when you are seated in the poolside restaurant.

One evening, the hotel had a group of tribal dancers perform a sing sing for several hours. Even when it started pouring down rain, the dancers seemed to enjoy putting on a show amist splashing feet next to the pool.

We used the conference center for meetings and it offered us all of our necessities and they had a staff assigned to us from 5am to 5pm specifically to attend to our needs as they arose. That personal touch came in very handy.

The primary negatives other than the sticker shock of the nightly rates have to do with some of the amenities. The tennis court and all of the workout facilities outside of the 7th floor pool are considered part of a Health Club which runs roughly US$35/day. And WiFi access is sold on cards in increments of megabytes and not time. So roughly US$40 will only give you limited amount of time online if you visit graphically inclined websites or any that have streaming video. The pricey nature of internet access made it challenging to Skype with my family like I normally do when travelling abroad.

All of that said, I felt safe and well cared for during my stay. And in a city like Port Moresby, it is tough to put a price tag on security. I would definitely ask that our clients place us at Airways on future trips if their budget will allow.

PS - They have an old Boeing DC-3 mounted on the side of the hill in front of the poolside restaurant. They are in the process of converting the interior of the plane from an old lounge for their nighclub into an internet cafe. In the meantime, you might ask the staff if you can take a look inside the plane. It is a time capsule to a bygone era.

No doubt this is a nice hotel with lovely rooms to stay in and a wonderful place to enjoy breakfast in the morning. The location to the airport makes it ideal if you have an early start for a connecting flight. Pick from the aiport is quick and staff are there to meet and assist from the airport.

However, the price is expensive - ridiculously expensive. This is the problem with suitable accommodation in PNG. It is being bid up by the increasing numbers of overseas business visitors who are coming in for the mining and LNG project. This is great but as a visitor I am getting totally fleeced for a standard 4 star hotel stay that should cost no more the USD150 a night.

I would not stay here next time as I do not want to pay over AUD500 a night for this sort of accommodation.

I stayed at Airways Hotel for three nights on business. The place is awesome. The new Dakota wing is stunning by any standards. The lounges are a great place to relax and unwind.

When you are at the hotel it is a totally different world from the rough life Port Moresby. The Poolside restaurant is great for breakfast but I strongly recommend Bacchus for dinner.I never expected Wagyu steaks in Port Moresby with a large wine selection.

They are coming up with a new Cheese room I am told pretty soon which will be a plus to their existing Delicatessan.

They have a great health club and a new Spa is also on the cards.Ther existing Spa is quite good too.

The staff try hard but do make occasional mistakes.

I suggest give it a go if you are in Port Moresby.

We stayed 3 nights here, Our flight arrived early and we used the hotel transfer service. We were greeted immediately after exiting the customs and immigration, what a breeze. Chilled towels at the reception were a nice touch as we made our way to the hotel room. We were taken to our room the Dakota Junior Suite where we had chilled iced tea waiting for us. Flawless!

This room itself is an over sized version of the standard room and was in perfect condition with a view over the airport and mountains. We definitely recommend going for these rooms, it was so lovely to sit by the window and watch the planes take off and land, surprisingly there is no noise.

The hotel location is great as it it is very secure, anywhere in Port Moresby is just a 15 minute drive. We had business in waigani and our local office arranged the transport for us.

We had dinner both at Bacchus restaurant and poolside open air restaurant in the hotel and both were great. Breakfast was okay although we did have the feeling that the buffet could have more choice. Evening drinks at the lounge was also fantastic.

What really set this hotel apart was the service, very well trained and courteous staff especially when we hear that Port Moresby is a hard place to live for locals.
