Owner description: Port Moresby Nature Park (formerly the National Capital Botanical Gardens) is PNG's leading recreational attraction combining botanical, zoological and cultural displays. The park is home to over 250+ native animals including bird of paradise, tree-kangaroos, cassowaries, wallabies, snakes, crocodiles, hornbills and multiple parrot species. The grounds also offer a lush change from the hustle and bustle of Port Moresby City with the only rainforest tract within the Capital City. Thousands of tropical plant species including palms, gingers and heliconias and native timber tree species are found within the grounds. Facilities include cafe, souvenir shop, flower shop and arguably PNG's best children's playground. The Nature Park can arrange transportation to/from hotels and airport to the Park and offer excellent guided tours of the Park (lasting 1.5Hrs). A popular location on weekends for weddings and private picnic functions utilising the Nature Park's three large picnic areas.

Its those little changes that stands out. After the new management took over, Nature Park has become a regular weekend-places-to-go to enjoy the cool walk and lunch away from the scorching sun!

Excellent transformation. Now I can at least smile to see, in general, animals being fed and plants in good shape, and a clean atmosphere. And not forgeting the friendly staff.

Good job...this weekend will be the boardwalk under the forest. see you there!

Thank you for your wonderful praise of Port Moresby Nature Park. We have been working very hard over the last two years so it is very rewarding when one of our visitors comments on our positive work.
I'm sure you have seen two of our current projects - the new entry/cafe/souvenir shop, which will open in April 2013 and our new tree kangaroo exhibits which will open in January, 2013. We can't wait to bring these new experiences to Port Moresby residents and visitors.

Good place to stretch your legs, have a picnic and see some local wildlife exhibits such as tree kangaroos, casowary and Goura pidgeons.

It is obvious this garden is cared for with a surplus of love. I spent a very peaceful 30 minutes strolling around, the few people I met where all smiling and happy - visitors and staff alike. The signage is adequate, though it would be nice to have some more detailed information on the flora and fauna (both wild and caged). A simple leaflet with a picture of the various species and a few lines of facts (scientific and common names, whether endemi or not etc.) would be adequate as the scale of the park is contained.
On my way out I chatted with the two girls who were manning the office/ticket counter/shop. They are both students at the U of PNG and couldn't have been sweeter at responding to all my enquiries. Thank you!

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to Port Moresby Nature Park.
The staff have worked hard at restoring the Park following a long period of decline and are very proud of their achievements to date.
There is still much more that we are working on, including our signs. We will be rolling out the signage over the next six months similar to the signage that you would have seen in the Rainforest Retreat. We are very fortunate to have obtained sponsorship from Esso Highlands to do this.
Thank you for taking the time to comment on trip advisor and I trust you enjoyed your trip to PNG.

Between flights and need something fantastic to do? A trip to the Gateways hotel for breakfast. A taxi ride 80 kenna to the nature park (Taxi will wait for an hour). 10 kenna entrance. A spectacular well kept nature park. Elevated walkways through the rain forest, exotic animals, cus cus, tree kangaroos, iguana, fruit bats, wallaby's etc. Fantastic birds to view in a huge aviary. Crocodile, pythaon etc. and a huge range of orchids and palm trees. All in a tranquil setting, that is well maintained and managed. A must for all travelers in this area.
