Hi,

<<Many frustrations including imporer adator for electrical outlet to plug in phone, laptop and camera. Was asured i had pr\urchased right one before going to PNG.Hotel was maybe 2 stars tops by North American standards.......al in all fine spot considering alternatives to choose from.Internet did not work in room and had to use same in hallway, also had to pay for internet as well.Could not get a phone call placed to North America for over 5 days.......maybe that is just how things work in that counrty so i am in no way blaming this hotel for those many inconvieniences

The bus picked us up from the airport and the driver and porter were very helpful and friendly. All the problems started at reception, the staff here were unfriendy, unhelpfull and made a complete mess of even the smallest task. Checking in was a nightmare as they had managed to mess up the booking, and this was after at least 15 e-mails to make the booking in which they continued to quote extraordinary prices which did not match the price shown on the web site. Once in the rooms they were nice and clean, the restaurant food and service was generally good but we did get one poor quality meal. Upon checking out the reception staff took about 30 minutes to put the bill together and made many errors.
I made sure to reconfirm our booking for 2 nights later in our trip, it was no surprise when we returned that they had indeed messed up this booking and didn't have enough rooms for us. We spent more time sweating in the reception area and finally were given apartments way out the back which were difficult for older members of the group to access. The receptionist was rude and confused and gave the impression that the mix up was our fault. This hotel should be a great gateway to PNG but is very poorly managed.

Stayed on this property for three nights during a 2-week tour of Papua New Guinea. Port Moresby is not safe, so it was definitely a nice feeling to be picked up by the shuttle at the airport, driven 2 minutes, and dropped at this hotel. Unfortunately, the front-desk staff are just awful! They will mess up even the smallest and easiest things and have absolutely no idea what "hospitality" means. A two-night reservation will become a one-night one, double beds will become a king, and the quoted rate will magically increase here. They never smile, either. Fortunately, once you make it past the front-desk staff, the rooms can be nice and comfy (depending on the wing you stay in). My group stayed in the wing by the restaurant (left of the front-desk) on our last night and the central A/C was broken. All the rooms were hot and getting it fixed was a joke. Fortunately, the A/C had been working well in the other wing (for our other two nights). Also, DO NOT bother paying to use the internet in the lobby...it doesn't work and they will not refund your money. Bottom line...expect a hassle at this average airport hotel with a great location.

Stopped there twice for overnight stays while traveling in PNG. Its conveniently located as its a few minutes drive from the airport. The customer service was excellent, and the hotel was aesthetically pleasing. Ordered room service for all meals and found the food to be above average- alright by Australian standards, great for PNG standards.

I stayed with my partner in two types of rooms, one with a balcony and one without. The balcony was great to sit out on and enjoy the sunset etc. but don't expect a great view with the razor wire and what not. However the rooms themselves were contemporary looking and quite pleasant.

Was a bit disappointed that the pool was undergoing renovations at the time, but that was the only hiccup in an otherwise pleasant stay.

Have stayed here numerous times since July 2009. Convenient & close to airport. Good shuttle service (free) - make sure you let them know if Domestic or International.
Not far from new shopping supermarket with good range of stock, not just food - need a cab to/from. 20k to/wait/return.
Good security, security staff will help you with good cabs.
Hotel staff very friendly & helpful - just take your time in explanations/requests so you are understood. Managers nearly always around.
Like most accom in PNG is expensive & subject to chronic over booking, don't assume you can automatically extend bookings, make sure any late arrival is advised or room may be resold.
New restaurant/bar now completed, fairly expensive but standards quite good.
Restaurant/bar staff attentive, excellent by PNG standards.
New pool now completed, excellent, pool towels supplied. Extensive tables/lounges around pool for eating or socialising.
Renovations continuing around downstairs bar & restaurant but everything works OK.
No in-house "night life" of disco or karaoke. Suggest Shady Rest for that stuff in-house or one of the night clubs - be very aware of security if you go out at night.
Rooms vary a bit, but always clean & comfortable, staff attentive & any problems attended to promptly by PNG standards.
As with anywhere, make sure you check account & sign any vouchers.

I normally don't take the time to write this kind of stuff unless I am really upset. Well, I am upset!

We had a reservation for two rooms. On arrival at about 9 AM, we were told our rooms would be ready by noon. Just to be sure, we checked at 11 AM and still our rooms were not ready; OK, fine, checkin is not until noon anyway.

So we went about our business, returning quite ready for a shower at 5. Suddenly, our reservation for two rooms is reduced to one room; they are expecting my colleague and I to share a room - on pressing them, still no rooms. We pressed harder, and finally after escalation into a shouting session two rooms suddenly became available.

Well, in my room, the aircon did not work. In my colleague's room,, the aircon did not work AND it was infested with little cockroaches, which climbed over him in the night.

So, we change rooms the next day. Still no aircon.

So where do I start. Poor maintenance, insect infestation, and surly, incompetent staff that lies to you. All at a high price.

This will be the LAST time I stay at this place!

I stayed for one night in July & a second night in August. There were renovations going on with a pool being dug or renovated. Most of the other guests seemed to be Kokoda Track walkers like us.

I could have stayed at the nearby Hideaway Hotel as part of my tour package but elected to pay an additional A$125 per day, ($250 for the two days), to upgrade to the Gateway. As our pre track briefing and post track dinner were at the Hideaway I had a good look at its facilities which were comparable with the Gateway. It even had a pool that the Gateway did not.

The Gateway advantage is that it is close to the airport, as is the Hideaway. It has minimal business facilities and an expensive breakfast option. It is in need of renovation with the rooms & public areas being very dated.

Service at reception was very poor. We had left our wallets & mobile phones in the hotel safe during the walk but when we returned to reclaim them, at 1530hrs on Sunday 2 August, it seemed that no one had a key to the safe. It took about 90 minutes for the duty manager to turn up & open up. The reception staff were busy and initially told us to go to our room & that they would contact us when the manager was found. After 60 minutes I gave up and just stood at reception to make the staff find the manager. Several times it was suggested that I take a seat at the back of reception but I found that the only way I could get them to do anything was to stand in their sight so they would not forget that we were still waiting for our security items.

We had booked a twin bed room yet we were given only one double bed. When we asked they delivered a camp bed that was set up in our room. On both visits to the Gateway my impressions were poor and it was definitely not worth the extra $125 per person per day to upgrade.
