“Nice hotel but over priced”
Reviewed November 23, 2012 via mobile

Stayed here on a business trip for four nights with a group of four. The hotel is very new with nice views over Port Moresby. Good and spacious rooms. It is however very expensive compared with all other hotels I stayed in, but this seems to be the case for everything in PNG. Also the pool is more like a bathtub than a full pool. The picture at the website of the hotel is very misleading. As already mentioned in other reviews obtaining internet scratch cards is something of a lottery. Most of the time they are out if stock and if the have them it is only one or two, which was not sufficient for all of us.

The facility is brand new, shiny as a new penny. The room was clean, the dinner excellent, as was the breakfast buffet (though the lack of variety in cereal was a bit disconcerting). BUT, no internet. Internet service is via a card -- about $77US for 300 Mb of data. They were "out of stock" and they told me that their supplier was likewise "out of stock". They kept giving me the runaround that they'd have cards "soon". This was not acceptable and I checked out as I did not want to spend the next four days of my stay in Port Moresby without internet.

Stayed at the Grand PAPS as they call it for three nights, staff were great, food fantastic, loved the buffets was a little expensive but you dont mind with the quality that was layed out, the Chef sounded like Gordon Ramsay from the kitchen, but he delivers and by the sounds of it with passion, service was a little slow and at times a bit frastrating, PNG time i guess!!!, rooms lovely, bar relaxing, Met the G.M Alex made me feel right at home nothing was a problem...maybe the room rate..
Will be back loved it.

Room Tip: stay on thge beach side fantastic views

I stayed for a week in one of the one-bedroom apartments on an upper floor of this new hotel in the heart of filthy Port Moresby CBD. They gave me a 'black' key card which entitles you to visit the executive lounge and enjoy free breakfast and cocktails in the evening. The apartment itself was quite nicely decorated but I have to say the sofa was one of the most uncomfortable I have ever sat on. The kitchen facilities were good but the complexity of the cook stove-top and washing machine were beyond belief and no instructions were provided. There must have been about 30 settings in hieroglyphics on the washing machine/combined dryer which I couldn't understand so I just selected one at random. Five hours later the machine stopped and I found to my horror that all my clothes had shrunk by several sizes.

The restaurant was okay but unbelievably over-priced and on one occasion I sent food back after waiting for an hour because it was just awful. The swimming pool is a joke. It's about 8 metres long and 1 metre deep and located right next to the restaurant and with no changing facilities.

The underground car park is a nightmare with very steep inclines and tight corners. I needed to do a five point turn to get out of the space I had found.

The only redeeming feature of this place is the Executive floor which really is international class.

This hotel was supposed to be the answer to Port Moresby's lack of 5 star accommodation. While it has all the trimmings, extremely helpful staff and what appear to be expensive fittings, the place lacks any atmosphere and is priced at a price only wealthy travellers and business executives can afford.

clean, modern, nice, but a little "sterile". Didn't feel like you were somewhere exotic. Had trouble getting the air con fixed and suitcase was delivered to the wrong room.
Lovely buffet dinner and breakfast, great service in the dining room/restaurant.

As others note, it is the most expensive hotel in POM. I feel that the room rate that they charge is actually OK - (decent) Hotels in POM are just expensive....What i did not like is the overall expense of everything else while in the hotel. Almost 30 Kina for a Corona in the bar, 20 Kina for a 500ML San Pelagrino etc. I guess due to the security concerns of POM in general, once you are inside, they have you, and milk you...
I would have rated the Staff better, but it is so hit and miss. I found most to be great, friendly and helpful, but a lot of them were very apathetic.
The rooms are OK; chic, 'fantastic furniture' style furniture, the balcony door was not airtight, so when the wind blew (which it did) you would get a horrible whining noise in the room.
I awoke one morning to find that a small army of tiny ants had invaded my room to get into the remainder of a sweet drink I had left on the bar, and quite a few of them hung about for the rest of my stay.

The restaurant is good, but if you want the buffet ensure you get there before 8pm, as they dont seem to restock dishes well after 9pm, the fresh station closes quite early also.

Grand Papua is one of the newest hotels in Port Moresby. It is very well appointed with good views of the ocean. Staff were very helpful and food quality was generally good. Very expensive, as is the case with most good quality hotels in PNG, but compared to other hotels GP offers better value for money. Good gym but the pool is too small to do laps.

Room Tip: Ask for a an ocean view room, but can be windy.
