“Good Hotel in Port Moresby”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2012

Have stayed there twice in the last 12 months. Good accommodation (apartments), friendly staff. Restaurant a bit chaotic and sometimes food preparation a little disappointing. Found it very expensive but there is not a lot of choice in Moresby at the top end of the market.

Room Tip: Apartment block was nice with good views over the sea but some of the other rooms we saw in other pa...

Hi - this is the preferred hotel (in my experience) where Air Niugini put up passengers when flights are cancelled or delayed. They tend to use the old (and cheaper) rooms. I got put up in a flat which was big and okay but all windows were not able to open so it was a bit musty. The airport pick up did take a very long time as others have commented ... and we were up at 3.30am to catch bus back to airport but driver was asleep somewhere in the van and a group of us hung around for over 30 mins. Restaurant here is particularly nice ... setting is good and the menu is diverse and service good.

I have stayed numerous times at the Ella Beach Hotel.
Always book the suites in the new wing,my preference is the ones either side of the gym on the top floor.
If you are looking for 5 star don't travel to PNG but if you are after a safe clean place to stay while visiting Port Moresby this is a good start and reasonably priced in comparision to some other places.
I found the staff friendly and helpful and genuine in their desire to be helpful.
The pizza ,hmmmmm not good and I got a bad guts from it,I had lunch with friends one day on the balcony and we ordered pizza....all of us got crook except the lucky one who didn't eat meat lovers.
The baked pork ribs in the restaurant are awesome BTW
And yes I always got the complimentary chocolate and wine :-))

Room Tip: Either side of the gym,no one appears to use it so it is nice a quiet and it is on the top floor whi...

I stayed here for 1 night on the way to Alotau. I booked the hotel through Wotif.com that included breakfast and a bottle of wine. I never received the wine but was delighted to discover that I was upgraded to the premier suite in the new wing. I agree with another reviewer that pick-up was slow compared to their sister property, Gateway. I also agree with Sembrono that breakfast was not properly set up especially when you have an early check-out.

I stayed here once when I got a special deal online which included breakfast and a bottle of sparkling wine (weekend getaway rates).

The main problem was that although I asked for airport pick-up when I booked the vehicle or staff were nowhere to be seen. I called the hotel and they said there should be a person there but that they would send the car. 40 minutes later I called again only to be told that the car was still at the hotel. They would send it directly. 30 minutes later one of the other hotel pick-up staff asked if we were ok and radioed the Ela Beach car. It was stopped on the way at Gateway hotel for some reason. In the end we waited 80 minutes for an airport pick-up. Not happy making.

When we arrived we were put in the new wing and I was very pleased with the room fittings, space, etc. The balcony had relaxing furniture to sit and watch the sunset (with the afore mentioned wine). The furniture was a little wet but it was fun to sit out and watch the day ending. Noisy parrots were a plus for me at dusk.

The restaurant could have been better - the food was reasonable but not all options available. Breakfast didn't go so well. We went down early as we had an early flight and we presumed the buffet was the only option (though it was limited a bit there was enough to eat). It was only at the end that other people came in and ordered a hot meal from the staff - who had not so much as offered us coffee in all this time, and despite being the only ones there. They did offer late check out on the weekend package which would have been great to use if we could. There is a second smaller pool in the new wing which looked nice. The main pool is surrounded by rooms and tables so not so great to swim at.
There was a fair bit of noise from people in the carpark in the early morning - leaving the hotel drunk I presumed. Not a big deal if you know to ignore.

I would say it is worth a discounted weekend package but not at the normal, stupidly expensive prices. I don't care what the standard price is in town - the hotels do not live up to the star ratings generally. Pick up service at the airport really needs to work every time.

Room Tip: Only stay in new wing

The new wing is the only place to stay? I spent three nights! The first in the old part, old dated needs a makeover! Moved to the new wing and arrived back in the 21st Century with good standards as one would expect for the price.

The employees could do with training in customer service, not knowing how to tie it all together.

Restaurant food is good, people prize the pizza but I found the base to be like cardboard.

Room Tip: Insist on the new wing!

The Ela Beach Hotel is like two hotels in one: the Old Wing is much lower in quality (2.5 stars), while the New Wing rooms are much more luxurious. The primary New Wing architecture uses 3 floors of corridors with the view of the exposed hillside rock face on one side and the rooms on the other. The rock face side also has terraces, fountains and a separate pool to spend time among, and only people in the New Wing can access that side via room card security. The pool in the main/old section seems to be available to people not staying in the hotel, so the privacy of the New Wing 3rd floor pool is a welcome retreat. The New Wing rooms are about 3 times the size of the Old wing, each one with a balcony facing the beach adorned with tropical furniture.
One downside is that they don't always change the pillow covers if you put the card out to have them replaced, and it seems that they sometimes run out of or forget some towels, like bath mats or wash cloths. They mentioned the washing machine was broken the first time, but it happened a couple times afterwards, so not sure if it was housekeeping or running out of towels.

Room Tip: Only accept a New Wing room
