“Historic Location with Great Reastraunt”
Reviewed September 8, 2012

Good place to visit and eat in the evenings. Food is excellent, but service is slow. If you have less than 2 hours, eat somewhere else. It is on the river with nice views, music, etc. If you're a fan of older construction or military things, this will be an enjoyable visit.

“Nice historical site, but...”
Reviewed August 4, 2012

It's nice to look t, the problem is the tour is only given in Dutch, so is all the writing everywhere. So beautiful things to look at, nice museum, but would be nice to have also the information in English. I can live without a tour guide, but we went there to learn about the history and was only able to look at object/pictures without knowing the meaning.

“Loaded with history, much of it grim”
Reviewed July 19, 2012

This fort is a must for every tourist or business traveller in Paramaribo. The place is loaded with history, most of it pretty grim. You can walk around almost everywhere, visit a museum inside on Surinamese and Dutch colonial history (which has some fine artifacts of native cultures), browse the book shop and walk the ramparts for a view of the river.
Not all of the history is old. Outside in one of the walls you can see the bullet holes where, in December 1982, soldiers brutally executed twelve critics of Surinam's military dictatorship, an episode which still deeply scars the country. There's also a small memorial.
The government of Desi Bouterse - who as leader of the military dictatorship was responsible for the killings and is now serving as elected President - has said the fort will be transformed into a 'national cultural center'. Critics fear those plans are just an excuse to remove the lasting physical evidence of the murders, including the bullet holes.
