The hotel was on a noisy street in the centre of Asuncion but was thankfully air conditioned. The room was big with high ceilings but the décor seemed a little dated. There was a balcony looking over the street. The beds were really soft and not good for anyone with back problems.

There is a lift (old style with manual sliding gates that only take 3 people but they are fast). There is a sitting are with sofas, a large TV and bar. Plus, there are safety deposit boxes in the lobby with no charge for using them.

A basic tourist hotel in Asuncion.

Good:
• Very friendly and helpful staff.
• The hotel (which was a former Palace) has great architectural details. In fact, the General Manager (a female) is actually an architect.
• A/C worked great!
• Nice water pressure and plentiful hot water.
• Breakfast was good (but not great). No hot food, but a nice array of coffee/ juices, yogurt, fresh fruits, ham and cheese, and breads (breakfast is included).
• They have high-end glycerin soaps which smell wonderful!
• Graciela, who runs the front desk and reservations, is extremely helpful and knows very good English.
• Very clean hotel.
• WI-FI is good (and free!) I was able to do Skype audio calls with no problems, and even a bandwidth intensive video call once.
• Rate is cheaper if you contact the hotel directly and pay cash or debit card (vs. hotel booking web sites).
• Extremely good value for what they charge! (my single rate was 190,000 – about $45 USD).
• Although the night staff doesn’t know English, they make a good attempt at it via Google Translator.
• There’s a gas station which has a convenience store that stays open 24/7 just 1.5 blocks away.
• There is a laundromat right next to the hotel – very reasonable prices.

Bad:
• The hotel has these beautiful balconies, but no chairs or table on them. I took a chair from the room and temporarily put it out there.
• There is a lot of street noise (traffic) at this hotel. On Monday to Thursdays, it usually dies down around midnight. But on Fridays and Saturdays, it doesn’t die down until 3A. Usually noise doesn’t bother me at all – here it did sometimes.

Misc.
• On Sundays, 99% of Asuncion shuts down (restaurants, stores, convenience stores, etc). Make plans on watching TV or reading a book that day. The front desk can point you to a restaurant six blocks (Boli or something like that), and McDonalds & Burger King is open that day too.
• Definitely see a Futball (American Soccer) game – even if you don’t like the game. What an incredible experience!

This is a hotel with old-world character with shuttered doors that open on to balconies. Some rooms and bathrooms have been done up and it makes a pleasant place to stay.

It also provides a decent breakfast including fresh fruit and fruit juices. The staff were helpful and professional.

Perhaps the only downside is that the front rooms with the balconies can be a little noisy from the traffic.

Room Tip: Check if you can get a refurbished room on the backside of the hotel to avoid the traffic noise

Our son, who is a Peace Corps volunteer, made all of the arrangements for our visit to Paraguay, starting with the Asuncion Palace Hotel. Knowing that we would be tired from a very long flight, our son made arrangements through the hotel for a car to pick us up at the airport (at midnight), and deposit us into a most comfortable suite at the hotel. It was a perfect start to our visit.
There is something special when a hotel can immediately make you feel welcome and relaxed, which is the caring hospitality of the Palace. Its high rating on TripAdvisor is well deserved.

Room Tip: The suites are a great value.

We stayed at the Asuncion Palace Hotel for one night on our way from Brazil to Bolivia.
Check-in was smooth and we were pleasantly surprised with our room which, from what we could gather, was much larger than the rest of our group’s. Upon entering we walked into a square shaped sitting area with a small sofa and a writing desk, then turned left into a corridor with a large bathroom leading off, and then into a light and airy bedroom. The room was at the front of the hotel and looked out over a not particularly busy street.
Breakfast was good and was taken in a pleasant dining room off the main reception area. The hotel did not have a restaurant for dinner, but there are plenty to choose from in the surrounding area.
The hotel is in a good central location and is a 15-minute walk from the main square. The surrounding streets felt fairly safe but were extremely quiet.

The Asuncion Palace Hotel is a special experience. It is a historical hotel, patrimony of Paraguay, being the home of the Lopez family in the 19th C. Now family run, and from the moment you step in, you are made welcome. You initially get the impression of being in a run down area, but actually, along the river is where the grand life once existed. Just two blocks away, in all directions, you are in the main streets of Palma and Estrella, the famous railway, the Government palace etc.. It is all walkable. The Hotel only does breakfast, (but with a homemade cake every day!!) but there are restaurants everywhere, just up the road. At all times, the staff is willing and helpful. You will not be dissappointed.

Room Tip: I had no noise from any of our rooms. The walls are 19th C thick!
