The old Dutch market building is beautiful. The market itself is very hectic and you can see many things you do not ordinarily see (guys getting haircuts outside and guys hacking pine or coconuts with cutlass/machete). It would be better if they had a drop off zone of 20 yards or so. The mini vans make it really, really crowded. It was also close to Christmas. Blaring music, good food. No real hassles or cons as I seemed to be the only anglo in the massive crowd. Didn't buy much except food and ice cream at Brewsters. A lot of freedom, I remember no police at all.

It's a very beautiful market, the wooden structure is remarkable. But be aware of burglars, it's a very dangerous place to be, specially if you're a tourist and they notice it.

If you're into markets then you definitely want to check this place it. Very busy, crowded and hectic and located in a very interesting building as well. If you're going to visit anything out of town then you'll probably be here anyway as all the mini-bus/taxis are here to take you to different places and the drivers are very helpful to get you to the right bus if you don't know. Obviously in a crowded place like this take precautions though.

I think the people who work at the Stabroek Market dont understand why their market is so cool. For me im not interested in the crappy fake clothes, pirate DVDs and shoddy merchandise. I loved the hustle and bustle of the busy market. Tons of shops and stalls crammed in to a big indoor market place. At the back you have all the fisherman stalls selling fish (some of which were air drowning which wasnt nice) and all the fruit and veg sellers. To the left of the market (as you look at it from the front entrance) are several small restaurants. I went to a great one that sold curry and sat inside reading a copy of the Stabroek Newspaper.

To me this market was perfectly safe. Were so many people, nothing is going to happen.

From what I remember this is mostly closed on sundays.

In Georgetown I stayed at the Herdmanston Lodge and the Market is about a 5 minute taxi ride costing about 500 Guyana Dollars. From the market you can also walk about 10 minutes to the big wooden Cathedral, which I thought was rubbish.

This place was interesting to see. Route taxis are right in front of this place and there are boats that take you to the other side of river.
