The tender was difficult, I got a sea shower trying to get on, but it was worth the effort. The place is erie, to think the French shipped mainly politcal prisoners here in the late 1800's to as late as the 1960's It is well kept and a step into the colonial past. There is a hotel on the island, but since is is so small, I am not sure how far away one would really want to get away from everything. It only has second growth trees as the French cut down everything so the prisoners couldn't hide, but it is very warm and tropical and lush. And the currents between the islands, there are several, are rough. Much hikings and lots of stairs to get around to see everything. Takes several hours, not including the beer.

Just 11km off the coast if French Guiana are the three islands that were used as France's penal colony. It is hard to believe that the now palm covered holiday retreat used to be a disease infested prison where some 70,000 inmates died. Ile Royale has a small harbour with a dock. A palm lined walk leads around the island and allows great views of Ile du Diable (Devil's Island) and access to a small swimming area (no beach). Half way along the walk visitors can opt to climb up tovisit the museum, if it is open, and then up to the Auberge. Near the hotel are the remains of the hospital, a church, a lighthouse, and the officials housing that are now cottages for hotel guests. Most of the visitors to the island come from the mainland. Staff at the Auberge and Museum speak mainly French. The island are under the authority of the French Space Agency who have restored some of the buildings and who do not allow access to Devil's Island only Ille Royale and Ile Saint-Joseph. Dollars are accepted but Euros are preferred.
