This hotel is well located in Central Bogota and offers something like a pretentious 3 stars service. But in my opinion, this hotel is better avoided.

First of all, it is really hard to find unfriendly bogotans. They are generally welcoming and helpful. But not at the Virrey. This hotel must have gone out of its way to hire unsmily, snobbish personnel.

Secondly, it is extremely noisy. The walls are not sound proof and metallic doors resonate everytime someone closes it. Moreover, the personnel itself does not care too much about reducing noise early in the morning.

I had a particularily bad experience at 3 in the morning when a bunch of drunk men came banging on my door. I called reception in order to have help (as I am a woman travelling alone), and did not receive it. After insisting, I was able to get my room changed to get away from the drunk men who had decided to watch a soccer game. I was moved into another room, which was dirty, and on the floor below the drunkards, which means I still could hear them well. (There are 6 floors at this hotel).

Finally, for my entire stay, the elevator was out of order and I did need to walk to the fifth floor. Its not such a problem for me, but I think that the sick, the elderly and the discapacitated will find this more challenging.

---
The hotel of our choice was full so decided to stay at this hotel and go elsewhere if unhappy. We had only heard of this hotel through a few web sites which recommended it but gave no details so we decided to take a chance anyway. We arrived early in the evening. The hotel is situated on a small street which appeared a little seedy but it is at the end which leads onto the busy and well-policed Carrera 7. The older-style building is of a nice & well-maintained appearance . The lobby appeared fairly dated but still acceptable. The building has around 5 floors with many rooms and looks quite large.

Our room was basic but we weren't expecting anything flashy, however, it was tiny and far too small for 2 people. There was no safe either, despite the web site stating that every room had one. The washbasin in the bathroom was blocked and there was a tangle of hair in it. In fact, there was hair everywhere in and out of the bathroom. I went to check the bedding situation and dared to look at the pillow in its case (the ultimate test) and its colour was a murky grey-black. I thanked God I had brought a pillow with me. We contacted Reception because our main concern was the lack of a safe. We were told that we could keep our valuables at Reception overnight (we had just our documents and electronics) but not during the mornings. They stated we had nothing to worry about as this was an honest hotel as were Colombians. We did not doubt this, however, we stated that we would still want a safe regardless of which country we were in. The bellboy/porter/reception assistant took this as a personal affront we were making about Colombians and so commenced to bleat about how we should be more trusting and that Colombians are very honest and very intelligent, etc.

We were then given another room, I think only because of the blocked washbasin. That room was just as unappealing and not-so-clean as the other but it had a safe. The porter was still ranting and was miffed all of the way until he closed the door and left. This room was near the lift so it was very noisy at all hours & early in the morning, we could hear the chambermaids screaming at each other. The next day, we decided to go to another hotel. To our surprise we noticed that the daytime staff, replacing the previous night's staff, was very pleasant and check out was a very simple affair. We went to another hotel and for the next 4 days, we enjoyed Bogota very much.
