“A lovely day out”

Go on Sunday to ensure you get the stream train - the only one in Colombia. Very enjoyable train ride into the countryside, But DON'T be fooled into buying ticket for the Salt Cathedral (a total waste of time and money).

“Excellent”

One of the best things to do in Bogota, a classic and unique experience in a steam train, with local food and drinks, the staff is very friendly and they will bring to yout seat any thing you ask.

“Tren Turistico”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 17, 2013

The 'Tren Turistico' or Tourist Train to the Sabana de Bogota, operates from Bogota to the Sabana every Saturday, Sunday and Public holiday. Those are the only days open to the general public. Even though it operates on week days, only schools and companies can get on. On Saturdays, the Train is operated by a Diesel Engine, and on Sundays with a Steam Engine.

We took the train from the Usaquen Station. It departs from the Station at 9.30 am. The train is fairly punctual; passengers are advised to be at the station around 9 am. It will also give you time for a few photographs at the station. The itinerary has one stop at La Caro for 10 minutes and then on to Zipaquirá. Here passengers have the option to go on a trip to the Catedral de Sal or to Nemocón (I will deal with the trip to Catedral de Sal separately). There is an additional cost to these excursions.

For those of us who have used modern trains in Europe, USA and Japan, this train leaves much to be desired. The seats are not very comfortable and are fitted with springs that appear to be quite old. Of course the experience is categorised as 'Classic Train' experience. I would however have liked a little more comfort. The tracks are obviously ancient as well and probably not very well maintained which makes for a rather uncomfortable rocking ride!

There was entertainment on board in the form of a typical Colombian Brass band playing typical Colombian music. They had two saxophones, a trumpet, a piano accordion, two drummers and a singer. The quality of the music was good. There are local snacks for sale on the train.

The journey of about 50 kilometres to Zipaquirá takes about 2 hours. That means the train travel at a leisurely pace of about 30 Kilometres per hour or less. Too slow for my liking!

After the excursions, the buses take the passengers on to the town of Cajicá for lunch (one has to buy one's own lunch), after which there is a little time to wander around the town square or for some shopping. Passengers then re-board the train for the trip back to Bogota. The trip back takes about an hour and 40 minutes.

The cost of the train is COP 42,000 per adult, COP 26,000 per child and COP 35,000 for a senior citizen (above 60). USD1 = COP 1887 (17th June 2013).
