I rarely take guided tours but thought that it would be useful for my first day in Colombia to have a guide. I couldn't have made a better choice.
I took the City Photo Tour (which was really a tour of photogenic places in the City) with Marcelo Bitti as my guide. Marcelo was friendly, energetic and a walking encyclopedia. He is an awesome guide. We visited Monserrate and Guadelupe Hill for great vistas of the City, then some graffiti street art in Candelaria, then lunch (good Colombian food) and then off to the market to taste lots of local fruit.
Marcelo was careful to ask what I was interested in and to fashion the itinerary to meet my interests. At lunch, I was free to choose whatever I wanted to eat (after he made some great suggestions). We didn't waste time (for me) in souvenir shops. It was exactly the kind of experience I was hoping to have and I learned more about the City and its residents in that 5 hours than I would have learned on my own in a week of travel.
I enjoyed it so much I surprised myself and signed up for a second day of tours to Guatavita. We traveled about an hour out of the city. I was pretty slow, but we took our time and walked up to the lake (it's a pretty easy walk), the clouds cleared and the sun came out long enough for me to snap some pictures, and then we made our way back to the van in the pouring rain and despite the weather, I counted it as another incredible day in Colombia.
At all times, the drives were friendly, helpful, courteous. Marcelo has a gift for sharing Colombia with his guests.
