La Portada offers great accommodation and amazing food close to the Tierradentro archaeological sites. The lodgings are quite new in big rooms with private bathrooms at very reasonable rates. The room/bathroom was spotless and the beds super comfortable. What really makes it great are the owners, they make you feel right at home. The food in the restaurant is lovingly prepared and plentiful, I imagine it's the kind of food Colombian grandmothers prepare for their families. Leonardo knows the sites very well and gives great advice on how to make the most of your time there. A bit of a trek to get there but worth the effort.

We stayed at the La Portada for two nights, and wish we had had the time to stay there longer.
Leonardo and Eva are the sweetest hosts you can meet anywhere. They are genuinely helpful and caring.
The number of the rooms was in June still the same, four, but the planned additions will be finished later.
We loved Eva´s meals and home-made juices and ice-cream. One of us went horse riding with Leonardo (3 hours 30.000 pesos, that is two horses and Leonardo as the guide). The steep uphill and downhill trip was great, but that route is definitely only for experienced riders.
We would recommend La Portada (which Lonely Planet mistakenly calls La Posada but still knows to praise the place in their latest edition) to anyone. You can get a bit cheaper rooms elsewhere in the area but this place is really memorable.

La Portada is the name of both a lodging and a restaurant, which are on opposite sides of the main road just as you enter San Andres. The Tierradentro museum is about a mile down the hill before you get to San Andres, but in visiting the various Tierradentro archeological sites, you will inevitably pass through San Andres, and because of the excellent restaurant, San Andres is the better choice for lodging when visiting this extraordinary site. Leonardo, the owner also has horses for rent, and will act as a guide to take you to the various sites which are spread on both sides of this steep semi-basin - San Andres being in the center ans up towards the rim.

Curently the hospendaje has 4 rooms, all with a very small en-suite bathroom featuring on-demand hot water showers. There are 7 more rooms under construction 3 with bath and 4 with a communal bath. Completion is expected in March 2010.

The construction uses local materials, basically a framework of bamboo, filled in with adobe and a bamboo roof. with a cement floor. This construction is designed to flex in an earthquake, and then be very cheap (or free) to repair if required. The room had 3 single beds and a desk in it.

All in all, I was VERY satisfied with La Portador and recommend it wholeheartedly. The price I paid for a single was 15,000 pesos per night. Unbelievable cheap. The food in the restaurant was excellent and just as cheap.
